Plenty of options available as Steelers pursue competition for Kenny Pickett at QB

    CHRIS ADAMSKI | Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024

Taking Mike Tomlin at his word during his end-of-season news conference, Kenny Pickett has reclaimed his role as QB1 for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Tomlin, of course, also promised “competition.” That term is open for interpretation, as are the Steelers’ methods for evaluating options in providing that aforementioned competition. It can take on myriad forms.

Here are the routes available for the Steelers to fill out their quarterbacks room in 2024:

If Pickett is really the no 1 guy they should’ve let him play against the ravens when he was clearly healthy enough. Given the way they went about playing MR the rest of the way and keeping a healthy KP on the bench they should’ve just said QB will all be sorted out in offseason/ training camp.

best and most likely option is just to go with KP, forget about cousins (theyve already boxed themselves in calling KP no 1) or the draft, and try to resign MR or get another reliable backup, cause chances are they’re going to need them to win a few games

There is no issue with any of this. The ONLY QBs on roster are Kenny and Mitch. Kenny is QB1 and Mitch is QB2. That is the most inane comment coach could have made about the QB position. Had he said absolutely nothing and walked out, we would ALL still know that Kenny is QB1 and Mitch is QB2.

To answer your question, S-i-W, at the time of the Ravens game Mason was QB1, Kenny was QB2.

Tomlin boxed the Steelers in by naming KP number one. Now MR may be more likely to sign elsewhere, a big name like Cousins, Mayfield or Wilson may be hesitant to come and if they are interested then Tomlin has to backtrack and of course name them the starter which will make him and the Steelers look a little foolish. He should’ve just said, the QB hierarchy will be sorted out in the offseason and training camp.

At the time of the Ravens game MR was the “hot hand” and the healthy no 1 QB was backing him up.

and btw Mitch may be technically on the roster but 99 percent chance he’ll be cut.

If Mitch is cut that leaves ONLY Kenny in the QB room. QB1. Not sure why you're having an issue with this. Kenny is QB1 until someone replaces him as QB1.

They’ll cut Mitch at the right time. As far as a problem, I just think they could’ve handled the QB situation better.

I think we can all see that as well. If the Steelers do hire Arthur Smith it could also mean Tannehill, which I like over Mitch as QB2. I would still draft a QB this draft too.

I would call our present no 1 QB shaky at best. If they stick with KP, were going to need a solid backup. Mitch may be out of the league when the next season starts.

Maybe a developmental QB in the middle rounds

He's not going to be a favorite for this draft, and probably not going to be ready to play for a year or 2, but I like the potential of Joe Milton out of Tennessee. If his processing speed catches up with his physical ability, I think he could be a starter. Maybe with one of the 4th round picks?

Milton looks good. Accuracy, pocket awareness are there, at least at the college level. Maybe worth it during the 4th. KP/Tannehill or MR/ Milton - not a bad QB room

No faith in KP? Maybe it’s justified, I still think he needs a chance, assuming he can beat out MR or whoever else they bring in

Steelers can mark QB Kirk Cousins off their free agent wish list

    Curt Popejoy
    Mon, Jan 29, 2024

If the Pittsburgh Steelers were considering signing a veteran free agent quarterback to help solidify the position, they might want to mark Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins off the list. According to Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the “buzz” is that Cousins could seek a two-year contract worth $90 million guaranteed.

I know I'm late to the party, but holy smokes -Joe Milton.

Looks like he's got some mechanics and footwork that need cleaned up and refined but gawrsh that kid can ball.

Good thing I'm n9t in charge of doodly squat. I'd draft that dude 3 times before I drafted some other more heralded QBs.

New Steelers QB Target Emerges after Tough Week at Senior Bowl

February 1, 2024 By Alan Saunders

The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t spend a lot of time scouting the quarterbacks at the 2024 Senior Bowl this week, but the ones they looked at probably didn’t impress much, as Oregon’s Bo Nix and Washington’s Michael Penix struggled in their battle of hyped-up potential first rounders.

But the Steelers might be looking into a passer that didn’t make the trip to Mobile.

Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis was injured late in the Seminoles’ season, suffered a broken leg that cost him his final three collegiate games and likely cost Florida State a shot in the College Football Playoff.

Travis is still not recovered from his injury, though he did attend the East-West Shrine Bowl practices to interview with teams. But the Steelers were there and did their due diligence on Travis, and with the Senior Bowl quarterbacks disappointing, that could be paying off.

It might be a coincidence, but in the midst of a mediocre week for Senior Bowl quarterbacks, ESPN predicted on Thursday that the Steelers will land Travis with their third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

I hope it’s not Travis, we don’t need a 6 foot tall mid round project. At least Milton has the height.

I doubt Travis goes in the third round. More like 6-7 or even UDFA.

that is what the "experts" said about Mahomes will take 3 years to see if he can even play ...... ummmm none of them will admit to saying that now
Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles didn't value him either , now he is a Stain at the Mistake by the Lake 3 teams in 4 years more of a shooting star than a superstar

    Ok.

The one set of clips i watched it looked like his backpedal for under center wasn't smooth. I couldn't tell you what was wrong but it looked off. And for a tall dude, he seems to sometimes drop the ball down by his hip and then throw. It looks odd. Don't know if it matters.

He also just seems like he can sometimes be herky jerky in his overall movements. But it could just be the very little I saw.

Clearly the guy looks as if he is the closet thing to Josh Allen to show up in the draft since Josh Allen.

But I've only looked at him for a handful of minutes. I'll be curious to read and watch more as the process unfolds.

I'll say this much from the little film I watched (like, 2 minutes worth), even when he scrambles, although he seems like he can run well, he still looks downfield for the pass first. Also, although it's college, he seems to progress through receivers.

I don't really want to pick up a project QB and then think we are set for the next few years if Kenny P doesn't work out. But if we pick Milton I won't be disappointed . . . depending on when we pick him, that is.

Also like that he's 240 pounds and dang, does he also have an arm and seemingly accurate with it as well.

Agreed. I look forward to finding out more about him and a few others from this draft class

I know basically nothing about any of the QBs. I'm sure the many knowledgeable and perceptive folks on here will be sharing a ton of great information in the coming weeks.

Rattler still intrigues me. He was thought of as a poor man’s Mahomes after his freshman season. Things got off the rails but in some way that could be good. While dropping his draft stock, he was also tested with adversity. I’m looking forward to reading a scout’s evaluation of him in a few weeks. But I think he’d be worth a flier to begin as a QB3. There’s no need to have a veteran at all three spots. QB3 needs to be developmental.

Has a QB ever been “developmental” and then develop into a starter over time? I mean you could start by saying Brock Purdy but he was thrown in for injury reasons…maybe the same situation with Brady. They didn’t really run through a “developmental stage”.

That’s a good list. Only one that I could think off off the top of my head was Gannon.
