Exclamation Jets interviewing Omar Khan for G.M. job

The Jets ultimately could be replacing Mike Tannenbaum with another Mike Tannenbaum.

The recently-fired G.M. rose through the ranks as a cap-and-contracts specialist. Now that the Jets are having trouble replacing Tannenbaum with a traditional “football guy,” they’re turning their attention to another cap-and-contracts specialist.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets will interview Omar Khan for the G.M. position on Thursday. Khan currently serves as the director of football and business administration in Pittsburgh.............

is he really as good as we all think (or used to think) he is? X-Terminator made a great point of speculation a while back about omar khan maybe not being that great genius we make him about to be because our cap hits are getting backloaded and its going to go out of control very soon. And were starting to see that this offseason actually

If he takes the job, great news for the Jets, awful news for the Steelers.

I don't know about that, the way he worked the salary cap last year when we were millions over the salary cap was a work of genius

yeah but those cap hits never actually go away. they just get backloaded in future years and build up more and more. plus this year the salary cap didnt even increase which is going to make it really suck

Khan does only have so much control over things. If Tomlin/Colbert want to ink a star to a long-term deal, Khan only has so much say in the matter. Obviously he's working out the numbers but he really can't say "No, we can't sign him. It's too costly." Not with a star player.

And looking around the league, if you're a team that has spent any decent chunk of money, you're feeling the salary cap squeeze because it's gone down.

Not really. All he did was push it into the future, which is why we're just as bad off this year. And look at the number of guys with $10M cap hits - six I believe.

    http://www.steelersdepot.com/2012/12...y-cap-numbers/

We've got over $75M - 60% of our cap - tied up with six guys. Just a hair short of $90M on the top eight guys (Miller being just under $8M and Colon at about $7.5M), so almost 75% of the cap on eight guys. Brown and his big contract aren't even in that. Restructuring again just kicks the can down the road and makes it nearly impossible to save money later by releasing any of those guys. We've got serious issues.

The Cynic in me says "Rooney Rule Interview"

cannot begrudge any person a promotion on merit. If the jets are serious good luck to him.

I don't think we're much worse off than we were last year. And as far as "all we did" was pushing the cap hits back, that's true - but for every year we do that we get one step closer to that player being off the team, and after a restructure that player's base salary is reduced making him an easier cut if need be. As far as I can tell there isn't any reason the strategy can't work nearly indefinitely - although I don't think we need Khan to keep doing it.

Restructuring makes players harder to cut, not easier.

Well Chidi, I think that story lays out the reasons we have not seen Omar get many interviews. He's seen as purely a Cap guy and most teams want a GM that is a football guy.

A high base salary is what makes it easier to cut a player. Anything in the base salary you save. Anything that was paid out as a bonus gets spread evenly through the rest of the contract, and if you cut the guy it all comes due (for cap purposes). Restructuring guys gives you short-term relief for one year at the expense of increasing the cap hit next year, as well as the amount of dead money you'll have if you cut the player. Some of these guys (Woodley, Taylor) I don't see any way out of it except keeping them all the way through the contract. And in Woodley's case, that probably means looking at $15-$18M cap hits for two or three years. That could well be our most toxic contract ever.

I think the cap goes up when the new TV deal kicks in around 2014 or so? Maybe the Steelers plan is to kick the can down the road another year and then take a hit on an increased cap? Who knows. I just hope that they Steelers have a guy getting trained up on Omar's cap magic.

whether this is true or not, it seems the premise of what omar khan does is heavily dependent on the salary cap increasing significantly each year. And thats something you just cant depend on. Some years it barely goes up, some years (like this year) it doesnt go up at all. It used to be a given on this team that all of the young emerging talent would get signed to big new contracts, but it looks like that isnt always going to be the case. we need to find a new way to do things imo or else were going to go through a transition period that we just cant get out of. its not like all good teams are in a situation like us. the patriots and packers are doing well with cap space and are still built for success in the long run.

looking at those 2 teams, it seems like the key is to cultivate young talent so that you dont have to bundle up too much money in aging veterans that are going to kick the bucket soon anyways. and we havent done that nearly as well as the packers and patriots in recent years

The Jets have hired John Idzik, formerly of the Seahawks, as their new GM. Done deal. Negotiations are complete.
