Well can't give up early runs against a pitcher like Johnson. We will be lucky to see a run tonight.

Who by the way has 6 K's already in the 4th ugh!

Not looking great today... Lets get into the game guys!

steelpride12
04-19-2011, 08:33 PM
Welp Buccos losing 6-0 in the 9th inning and will lose this one. Like I said we would be lucky to get a run in against Johnson and the Buccos are a much improved team, but beating #1-#2 starting rotation pitchers easily, ehh have to work on that!

Gotta stop giving up a bunch of runs to teams with their aces on the mound. Maholm failed hard tonight.

Borski
04-20-2011, 02:11 AM
Maholm hasn't looked great so far this year. I thought we had 2 good pitchers in Maholm and Correia, so far I was only half right. Lets see if Maholm can change my opinion on his next start.

steelpride12
04-20-2011, 07:49 PM
Well another tough game for the Buccos so far tonight. Top 6th and losing 6-0 and the offense again just disappears.

Borski
04-20-2011, 07:57 PM
Neil Walker screwed up in the 2nd with the bases loaded 2 out and a 0-0 score. Messes up an easy out at first to end the inning, insead a total of 4 runners cross the plate in the 2nd.

That play is made and we would still be in this game.

Borski
04-20-2011, 08:36 PM
Well we lost our first road series, lets try and get at least 1 win out it tomorrow.

McCutchen leaves team for personal matter
Wednesday, April 20, 2011
By Colin Dunlap, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
MIAMI -- Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen left the team today to attend to what manager Clint Hurdle called a personal matter.
There is no timetable on McCutchen's return, as the club will play tonight and Thursday here in Miami against the Marlins before returning to Pittsburgh to play Friday. In McCutchen's place tonight, Jose Tabata will play center field with Matt Diaz playing left field and Garrett Jones in right.

Buccos lose 3 straight now and their first road series of the season and Cutch is gone for personal matters. Well this sucks

X-Terminator

They lost 3 straight and didn't look good in any of them. Hard to believe that was the same team that took 3 of 4 from the Reds.

Oh well, maybe the Nats will bring them better luck.

Cutch was back in the lineup tonight, did he leave again?

Apparently his father was sick in a hospital in Lakeland, FL (where I live) Apparently his dad is doing better now and he rejoined the team and played today.

The offence showed a little more life today, but we cannot allow 9 runs.

Also, I like Pedro, but I think he needs to either be benched temporarily or sent to the minors for a couple weeks to work on some stuff. he is making way to many errors and even though he hit a HR today doesn't make up for his poor hitting so far this year.

PITTSBURGH -- Once one of baseball's most promising young prospects, Brandon Wood will get a chance to resurrect his career in Pittsburgh.

On Friday, the Pirates claimed Wood off waivers from the Angels, who had designated the infielder for assignment earlier in the week. Wood reportedly drew interest from multiple teams, but the Pirates, by virtue of having the worst record in 2010, had first dibs on the waiver wire.

He has good HR potential....but he also strikes out ALOT.

http://www.bucsdugout.com/2011/4/21/2125084/brandon-wood-waivers-pirates-angels

Wood exhibited serious strike-zone issues, often striking out nearly three times as much as he walked. That tendency has eaten him alive in the majors, and the awful numbers he has posted there probably aren't a fluke, as he now has 153 strikeouts and 13 walks in 172 major-league games. Those are the numbers of a guy who simply has no idea what he's doing at the plate. And the problem doesn't seem to be getting better. In 2010, he had 71 strikeouts and six walks; this year he has eight strikeouts and no walks. Wood at been at Class AAA since the Reagan administration, so it isn't like he has been rushed to the big leagues, and not once has he put up big-league numbers that show even a glimmer of hope.

So what do we do about Jeff Karstens (2-0, 3.94 ERA) when Ross Ohlendorf comes back? Karstens filled while Ohlendorf is on the 15 day DL, but Karstens is 2-0 in 3 starts. McDonald (not counting tonights win) and surprisingly Mahlom seem to be the week starters of our group so far. Do we adjust the lineup to keep Karstens in the rotation?

No. Ohlendorf gets back in the rotation and Karstens back to the bullpen. Karstens is good for a spot start here and there only, not a guy you would feel comfortable giving the ball to every 5 days.

I disagree.. The only issue Karsten had last year was he couldn't get past the 5 inning without giving up 3-5 runs and so far this year he has cleaned that up. I'll take Karsten over Ohlendorf... Karsten has a much better strike zone..

Let's think about it.. We won 4 road series last year, already done that in a month this year. We have only lost 4 series this year so far - Marlins, Giants and Brewers and Rockies... We have beat the Rockies, Cards, Cubs, Nats and Reds.. We have the lowest ERA for a bullpen in the whole MLB, we have had two pitchers have complete games and only one all last year...

http://www.cbssports.com/#!/mlb/story/15024919/hooked-on-pittsburgh-hurdle-has-pirates-believing

...."As I told them in spring training, I want to be easy to please and hard to satisfy," Hurdle says. "And that's where they've got me right now. We've done some things I'm real happy with. It's not all record-related. That's how we're measured up here. We've played good teams. We've had an incredibly challenging schedule."

He's right, which is another positive sign: The one-under .500 Bucs have faced teams currently in first place in 13 of 29 games so far (Colorado, St. Louis and Florida, which is off to the best start in franchise history). They've also played six others against legitimate contenders (Cincinnati and Milwaukee) and three more against the defending world champions (San Francisco)......

Awesome article and great point! The Buccos are one game under .500 and most of their schedule so far was against great teams, with great pitching and hitting and the Buccos are finally keeping up! Now we have Astros so let's see if we can sweep them and get the easy series W!

Charlie Morton is having a hell of a start. Other than the one bad start where he gave up 6 runs, he's been terrific. Hopefully he can keep it up - him and Correia both. Maholm pitched great last night and should have had a W if their anemic offense could have gotten more than 2 runs.

Can they finally get back to .500 and finally win a series at home? We'll see.

On another note - when they showed a shot of "Baghdad" Bob Nutting during the Padres series, I couldn't help but want to smash his face in with a steel chair. I hate him so much.

Bucs keep flirting with .500.

This is really nice yet sad at the same time. But again, two decades of losing will do that to you. Remember, the Bucs were 30-30 at a point back in 2005 and still fell apart. I'm still not believing. Still a long way ago.

steelpride12
05-08-2011, 10:20 AM
I do think this is a different Buccos team than years before because the pitching is much improved, I mean Correia, Morton, and Maholm are having their best seasons so far and McDonald will improve and be an excellent starting rotation guy. The bull pen is one of the best in the league right now, yes they blew a few games, but over last season well improved!

Clutch hit by Doumit, great job by McDonald, but a sloppy game overall. Resop has blown chunks his last 2 outings - they should have brought D. McCutchen or Veras in. If it happens again, time to demote him to an outing here and there.

Dodgers will be a tough test. I'd be happy with a split.

Tomorrow nights game will be tough as both Chad - Dodgers up against karsten is pretty even. We need a strong offense and smooth running bullpen... Wednesday could go either way with Maholm pitching against Hiroki..

Well the Buccos seem to find ways to get offense going on the road which leads to a lot of their success where the runs just don't add up at home for some reason. if the Bucs continue to score runs early in games and the pitching is good enough the Bucs can take this series.

Most of these guys playing are under the Pirates' control for at least the next 3 seasons, which means they can pretty much pay them whatever they want. So I highly doubt they will trade any of those players or anyone else, especially if they are still in the running for the division in July. But then again, this is Baghdad Bob we're talking about, and I've learned to expect the worst when it comes to anything he does.

I have a hard time believing things will ever change with the Pirates as long as the current ownership group remains in place. They should have sold to Mario and his partnership group when they had the offer. Any dime spent in attendance of this team as long as Nutting owns it is akin to supporting the Vichy Government during the Nazi occupation in France! Well I suppose that's a little bit of an overstatement, :wink02: but seriously if you're a real Pirate fan the best thing you can do is to boycott everything Pirates until the current owners are forced to sell.

That's pretty much what I've done. I'll watch on TV, but beyond that, I will not spend one single dime on anything related to the Pirates so long as Baghdad Bob is the owner. But they manage to keep fooling enough people to go to games and turn a profit every year, so unless the league gets tired of their penny-pinching crap and do what they did to the Dodgers, there's no hope for winning baseball in Pittsburgh. And that's a damn shame, because they have such a beautiful ballpark and plenty of talent that is getting zero support from management.

Maholm has a 3.67 ERA going into tomorrow's game. It's not his fault he gets no run support, hence his 1-6 record. If you're going to replace anyone temporarily, you can start with McDonald, though he's pitched much better lately. The better question is why the hell are they wasting their time with Joe Beimel, when Danny Moskos was great during his stint here. 2 more hits allowed in the 9th tonight and Hanrahan had to save his ass again. But they won, and that's all that matters.

Pirates beat Tigers in front of sellout crowd
Sunday, May 22, 2011
By Colin Dunlap, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

There were no wide spaces of empty seats inside PNC Park.

No signs of apathy surfaced, either.

In fact, when a flock of Detroit fans began a "Let's Go Tigers" chant, they were shot down and drowned out by a "Let's Go Bucs" push back.

As the Pirates were on their way to a 6-2 victory Saturday night against the Tigers before a sellout crowd of 37,958, the negatives never happened.

The bullpen never imploded.

Huge quantities of runners were not left on base.

No base-running gaffes ran the Pirates out of an inning.

These weren't the same old Pirates.

Not this night.

Running parallel with things on the field was what went on in the stands both before and after the first pitch was thrown at 7:05 p.m.

"Great crowd," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "It was great to see the people out. A Saturday night, perfect day, a perfect evening, and you'd like to complete the drill and play a good ball game."

So, the Pirates did just that. They won a fourth consecutive game for the first time this season, and everyone who wanted a piece of it, including about 7,000 people who decided to walk up and purchase tickets on gameday.

And the tailgaters -- dotted with Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen shirts -- were out hours before the game, jamming the North Shore.

Bench coach Jeff Banister is in his 26th season with the organization. He said he had "goosebumps" when he heard the Pirates' fans drowning out the Detroit chants. He recalled telling hitting coach Gregg Ritchie, "Hear that, Gregg? That's what it's going to be like here every night when we're winning."

It was something to behold, moreso because the game was not on television so you had to be there to see it.

X, I know where you are coming from and I also struggled about the same issue you are. I really dislike the ownership of this team but I came to the conclusion some time ago, that the Pirates belong to Pittsburgh and I'm not going to allow a jagoff like Nutting to keep me from enjoying my Pirates. Owners come and go but the Pirates are ours.

Another thing is these young players are going out there everyday and playing their asses off and trying to wins games. Unlike some teams in the past they are not just going through the motions and just trying to get through the season.

It's not their fault that they work for an owner like Nutting. They deserve our support and I'm going to be there to clap when a young player like Correia pitches a good game or when McCutchen makes a great catch in the outfield.

While in the Army I served five Presidents. Some I liked and some I didn't. But in the end it didn't matter. I loved the Army and no President, no matter how much I disliked them, was going to change that. It is the same way I feel about the Pirates. I love the Pirates and no owner is going to change that and I'll be with them until the end...no matter what.

They scored a total of 16 runs the previous 2 nights. How the hell is Maholm supposed to win when the offense puts up NO runs and had only 2 hits the entire game? He's supposed to provide all of the offense AND pitch a shutout? If you only give up 2 runs, you should be expected to come away with a W far more often than not. Blame the lack of offense for the loss yesterday, NOT Maholm.

I totally respect your stance, and will not fault you for it. But for me, putting money in Baghdad Bob's pocket only enables him to keep putting crap out on the field. Now granted, this team right now is probably more talented overall than any team in the last 18 years, but I want to see Bob start spending a little more money to give them a little more support. They could still use another proven big bat in right field and it would be nice if they either developed or brought in a power-hitting first baseman. Correia, while he has pitched well most of the season, is really not a top of the rotation guy. On a good team, he's a 3rd or 4th starter. They really don't have a true "ace," although Morton has certainly pitched like one. They've won 22 games so far, and if the Brewers didn't completely own them, they'd currently be tied for 1st place or in 2nd. It's still not enough for me to give him my hard-earned cash...at least for now. If the team keeps it up and they aren't 20 games out of first by the end of July, then my mind might be changed. Until then, no soap.

Come on, man. You know that sometimes pitchers have bad luck and don't always get good run support, usually because they've gone up against good/hot pitchers. He's also had two wins taken away because the bullpen shit the bed late in the game. You going to blame him for those as well? If he was 1-7 with an ERA over 5, I would completely understand your point. But his ERA is 3.65, which is 2nd among the starting pitchers (Morton 2.62; Karstens hasn't pitched enough innings to qualify). He's pitched plenty well enough to have more than 1 win.

7 innings, 7 hits, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K. Pretty good numbers, though 3 walks isn't what you want to see. And yet, once again, the offense doesn't do a damn thing and wasted his effort. They would be over .500 if they were just an average hitting team. If I were the hitting coach, I wouldn't get too comfortable, especially if they continue to lose winnable games due to the lack of offense.

Honestly the braves offense is so depleted with injuries I was really glad to see some decent pitching from them. That is what wiill carry them until they are healthier.

Any other offense would have brought them home. That's why they walked Jose. Pearce just sucks.

Bucs win 10-0, hit four HR and Maholm pitches a 3-hit shutout. As much as the Brewers own the Pirates, the Pirates absolutely own the Cubs. They've now won their 7th road series...they won just 7 in the last 2 seasons combined. Unbelievable. Now, if they can just start winning some games at home and the offense gets more consistent...who knows where this team can go?

Bucs win again 9-3; Correia gets his 8th win to lead the majors. He becomes the 13th straight starter to allow just 2 runs or less, and the Bucs are now 23-5 when they score 4 or more runs. It is still amazing to me how well they've played on the road - they already have as many road wins as they did all of last season. They need to try to bring some of that home - their upcoming 10-game homestand would be a good time to start. They have been so much fun to watch and are making it extremely difficult to stick to my guns about not giving one cent to Baghdad Bob to watch them play at PNC.

Bucs keep showing the inspired play.

One leaves the question if the Bucs are still in this position by the All star break. Not over .500, but flirting with it. Like 2-5 games behind and showing the inspiring play. What will the Nutjob do? Break the team apart, sell our best players to the big teams or bring someone in to help? We'll see.

Bucs blow a 7-0 lead today and lose 9-8.

Finding ways to lose is not good. If the Bucs want to continue the progress in a work in progress, they have to start putting teams away. First step to winning: Don't find ways to lose.

Yes Paul, you did suck yesterday. HARD. There is absolutely no excuse for blowing a 7 run lead. To me, that undoes a lot of the good pitching you've done this year, and I am not surprised at all that you were the one to end the streak of 13 consecutive starts allowing 2 ER or less. Oh, and thanks for reinforcing my stance on not spending any money at PNC. I was getting worried that I was slipping.

Anyway, hopefully Charlie Morton can get the ball back rolling again, but the Phillies will be a VERY tough opponent. I am not expecting much offense out of the Bucs this weekend.

But that's just it - I'm not expecting them to continue to have that success and eventually they'll have a similar 2-18 stretch like they had last June. They have some pretty tough teams coming up as well - Indians, Orioles, Red Sox. If they can win even half of those games, then maybe I'll fully get on board. The thing is, I WANT to support the team with my wallet as well as on TV, but I just can't yet because I don't trust the Three Stooges.

Rendon, the Howser Trophy (national POY) winner last season, has piled up impressive stats as a collegian. He’s followed up a 1.331 OPS (including 26 HRs) last year with a 1.053 mark this year despite playing with an injured shoulder.

Even though they lost yesterday, I will take a 2-1 series against the Phillies! I'm starting to wonder if Hurdle has a little bit of an issue of when to pull a pitcher. Bucs pick Gerrit Cole with their #1 pick, and predictably, a lot of fans aren't happy. OK, so he didn't have a good junior season...so what? The guy is the consensus best pitcher available in the draft and has top of the rotation talent like Jameson Taillon. He freaking throws a 90 MPH changeup for crying out loud. I like the pick - they are proving they can be somewhat successful with good pitching and sub-par hitting, so why not go for Cole?

Can we at least get the kid into the system before we start calling him Maholm Jr? They will work on whatever mechanical flaw he has and get him righted, because clearly this kid has all the tools to be a dominant pitcher.
