When are the injured players scheduled to return? This is getting exciting.
Ugh probably not till after the All Star Break. I hope most of the starters are healthy at that point at least!

Most all injured willn't return to end of July like Pedro and Jose. Ronnie will be back after ALL-Star game.. I would expect to see Chris until Sept if he really can come back. Pedro was optioned to AAA this week. Who knows about Ryan anymore. I really could careless if Pearce comes back..

Bucs win 9-1 today to take the series and finish 47-43 going into the break. Cutch with a HR and 5 RBI today, making a statement that he should have been in the ASG from the beginning. Maholm pitched another gem - 1 ER, 0 BB and 8 K in 7.2 innings, and lowered his ERA to 2.96. Imagine what his record would be if he got more run support.
Anyway, here's hoping the break doesn't cause them to lose focus and go into the tank, especially with a tough schedule coming up to end the month. Also, they are apparently looking for some help in a trade and are willing to trade some prospects, a complete reversal of what they usually do at the deadline. Seems like they are at least serious about trying to make a run at the division, being just a game out of first place. We'll see, though.

He finally did make it in, but only because Ryan Braun of the Brewers is injured and can't play. It's still bullshit if you ask me. BTW, Kevin Correia is also going to the ASG to replace Cole Hamels, who pitched for the Phillies today and won't be available.

Another good win today by the Bucs to get two out of three. What does suck however, is that the Brewers and Cards won as well.

Fun fact for the day: The 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates were the last team to win Game 7 of the World Series on the road. They were also the last road team to win Game 7 of the championship round, in any major league sport, until the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 at Joe Louis Arena to win the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals.

Interesting facts. I am happy the Bucs ended the first half of the season so well. It allows for fans to savior the season so far. You just never know what the future may or may not hold.
Congrats to the Pirates' All Stars.

Great to see Correia, Hanrahan and now Cutch all getting into the All-Star Game Ill be watching and rooting for them all the way! Bucs slammed the Cubbies today and yes 4 games over .500 going into the halfway point of the game, WOW it is finally great to see a winning club in Pittsburgh.
Bucs need to just stay the course, get healthy, and prepare for the second half if they want any chance at the division. It looks like the division or no playoffs with the tough wildcard situation in MLB, but I won't get greedy!

Just watched enough of the All-Star Game to see the Pirates' appearances. Hanrahan might have been able to close the game sif not for the Castro error. Of course, one had a feeling that maybe Wilson was coming in one way or another.
Good to see the National League win again. Any advantage almost any National League team has over the SOX or Yanks is fine by me. If it is the Rangers in the AL, then maybe a different story depending on who goes from the NL.

It was a good year and All Star Game. Of course Wilson closed the game, I think Hanrahan is having a better season than him, but tough to get the love and recognition when you play for Pittsburgh!
Oh well Im just ready for the 15th so we can get the 2nd half of our season underway!

Bucs off to a hot start after the break up 3-0 now to the Astros with a Karstens gem in the work. Through 5 inning Karstens has throw 41 pitches compared to Houstons 101 pitches!

Crazy indeed .... really tough for me to decide what I want the Pirates to do at the trade deadline. I'd like like a bat in the outfield, but I don't want them to go crazy and start trading away prospects. Somehow the powers that be have to balance the future and the present (which no one thought was going to be like this). I'm sure many fans will disagree with me, but I wouldn't be that upset if we stood pat.

I personally wish the Pirates would buy a pitcher. Even with the few good pitchers we have, I still think that area can be upgraded. The bullpen needs it still.

If this team could score some more runs, they'd be all set. Hopefully the rumors about Beltran or Pence come to pass - they desperately need another big bat in the middle of the lineup. At any rate, someone needs to pinch me, because I must be dreaming. No matter what happens from here on in, it's been an unforgettable season.

Do you think the miracle will happen(pirates in the playoffs)?
If the pirates make the playoffs, it will be the biggest surprise of baseball history and perhaps even in the history of professional sports....I think he never had a team that made the playoffs after having a season of more than 100 losses...And we know that pirates have always had a losing record since 1993.
His is an incredible story if the pirates would the playoff. One thing is sure, the pirates shock the world right now!

I wouldnt start talking playoffs just yet, Im not quite sure we are there yet. Yes, Hurdle has made a huge difference, and yes, we seem to be playing well right now. But if we dont get help on the offensive side, we are doomed. If we do happen to limp into the playoffs, I dont see us going far. However, I would be ecstatic if we finish with a winning record, even if we dont reach the playoffs
every time i think the winning/national coverage is going to get to their heads i remember the manager is clint hurdle and he will not let it get to their heads. if they make it through the reds (2-0 of course so far), st louis, atlanta, and philly at .500 i think they'll be in the race down to the last weekend for the division without a doubt. that is about the toughest stretch you can possibly have in a season.
also i would not trade any of our top 3-4 or so prospects in the minors for any carlos beltran or anything i've been hearing about. if you can trade some overbay, diaz, jones, doumit or something for something better (i doubt it), then go for it but the next 5 years is more important than the next 3 months for a rental for sure. if alvarez comes back and plays like last year then thats better than any trade they could make

I would do it for Hunter Pence. He's still young (28), in his prime and signed through 2013. I would NOT do it for Carlos Beltran, who they would not be able to afford as a UFA. You will not get much for any of the guys you mentioned...maybe a decent relief pitcher, but that's about it. Alvarez, BTW, went 4-4 last night and is batting .360 since starting his rehab stint in Indy. That is a VERY good sign. The good thing is that they don't have to rush him back, or any of the other injured guys, because the team is still winning without them.

Frank Coonelly: Pirates will look to add
The division-leading Pittsburgh Pirates will consider adding players before and after the trade deadline, team president Frank Coonelly told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
The surprising Pirates, who lead the NL Central by a half-game over Milwaukee and 1½ games over St. Louis entering Wednesday's games, also are enjoying improved results at the box office, as fans put off by nearly two decades of futility are returning in droves.
Coonelly said that success at the gate will help the Pirates pursue reinforcements as they chase their first winning season, division title and playoff berth since 1992.

I hate losing, especially to someone in our same division. Other than that one single and catch, Chase was horrible today. I hope Clint benches him for a game. We need another big bat, our pitching is doing alright. We need more offense and we need to stop leaving people stranded on base.

I think it's pretty safe to say that Chase isn't ready for the big time yet. He hasn't fielded well and has looked overmatched at times at the plate. I do like his aggressiveness and the talent is clearly there. Hopefully Cedeno is ready to go soon.

Agreed. Chase has made a few strong and impressive plays on defense, but his bat is not there, just not ready yet.
Also I love the idea of Pence coming to the Bucs and think he is the exact puzzle piece we need to get this offense going and match it with our starting pitching. Young and powerful.

They had a lot of polls about the Pirates. ESPN loves them now. There was a poll asking if people wanted them to win and over seventy percent said yes so I feel people want them to win. It's always a nice story to see franchises that were once great become great again. It would be nice to see it happen to the Royals and O's as well.

Cards are really smacking the Bucs in this series effortlessly. Despite what their record says this year, the Cards have been a talented contender for years with upper echelon players and big names. They have a ton of power.
So far the Bucs aren't doing so hot handling the top tier competition. If they want to take the next step, they have to start beating the Cards and Brewers, because they've been the biggest thorns in the sides of the Pirates for a while.

Bucs need to win these games, I know it's one tough stretch, but it's their proving grounds and if they fail like this through the next couple of the series the division could already be long gone, come on boys!
I'm not expecting them to win the division. I mean, I HOPE they do, but it isn't the end of the world if they don't. No matter what happens, it's been a great season, and Pirates fans can finally - and legitimately - say that better times are ahead. They've already taken a pretty big step being where they are now.

The Bucs got away with minor offense against the Reds because of the excellent pitching, but the Cards have brought the power bats and when they score more than 3 runs it seems the Bucs feel they can't come back because of the lack of run recently. Have to get the offense going soon, we will need it.

Oh I don't care to be honest if we make the playoffs, yes it would be of epic proportions and I would break down because it's been so long since I saw a winning team, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Yes, they are. They drew fairly large crowds for weeknights on Monday and Tuesday (22,000+ and 26,000+, respectively), sold out 2 of the 3 games over the weekend and drew over 30,000 yesterday. It's good to see. I've only been to one game myself so far this year, but I'm planning on going to another one before the season ends. Hopefully they'll still be in the division title race in August and September so that game will be meaningful. I still can't stand Baghdad Bob Nutting, though, and still hate giving him a cent.

Fun game to watch. I flipped back a few times to see how the USA Ladies Softball Team was doing, but caught most of the Pirates Game. We can win pitchers duels. Actually, because of that fact, we might match-up better against Atlanta and Philthy than we do against ST. Louis. Atlanta and Philthy are towards the middle of the NL in batting, while last time I checked ST. Louis was on top.
Edited to add: I just checked and, yes, St. Louis is on top of the NL in batting average. All the good teams in the NL this year are pitching teams save for St. Louis and Arizona. Heck, San Fran is below the Pirates in batting average.

I believe every Longtime Pirate fan hates the Braves. They were repsponsible for the worst moments in Pittsburgh sports history and sent the Pirates into this losing mess to begin with. They enjoyed loads of success while the Bucs mired in losing. Alongside the Patriots, Capitals, Flyers, and Ravens, the Braves belong on that public enemy list in Pittsburgh Sports.

Braves need a bat like no other, there hitting is sad recently. I mean they will have their games but they are so inconsistent to be talked about as a big time contender.
There pitching is the reason they have the potential to do well. Hanson tonight (going against Karstens so no easy game there) and Jurrjens tomorrow need to get it done, then we will gift wrap you guys the game with Lowe on the mound Thursday night.

Even without the video evidence there is a surefire way to know the tag was applied -look at Julio Lugo actions and non-actions. He clearly felt the tag because he starts walking away until he sees the safe call and then, and not before then, does he come back and step on home plate. Obviously, he thought he missed the bag. Knowing that, it reasons that if Lugo had not felt the tag, he would have immediately stepped on the bag after crossing home plate instead of waiting for the call..

You know, the more I watch cakmakli's signature, the more pissed I get. How in the HELL do you blow that call when you're standing right there??? If Bud Selig had an ounce of integrity...which he doesn't...Meals would at the very least be suspended today. Totally inexcusable.
We just have to hope this doesn't send the Bucs into a tailspin they can't recover from...

Sorry, but I'm really ticked right now. I've been a Pirates fan since I moved here in 99. I've went to a lot of games and supported them through a lot of bad years. Now we are making a decent run where every game is so important and for one to get stolen like this just pisses me off.

I'm assuming McKenry brought his glove up so Lugo's body wouldn't jar the ball out of the glove when he finished his slide.

Pirates file formal complaint over Meals' call
By Jenifer Langosch / MLB.com | 07/27/11 12:53 PM ET
ATLANTA -- Less than an hour after the Pirates were left baffled by a game-ending call made by home-plate umpire Jerry Meals, the club filed a formal complaint with Major League Baseball's Commissioner's Office.
MLB does not have the authority to overturn judgment calls made by its umpires, but this was one way the Pirates ensured their voice would be heard. That complaint was filed around 2:30 a.m. ET.

That's really all they can do to make sure they let them know what they think. But if this doesn't really get the ball rolling for expanding instant replay in MLB, what else has to happen? I think you guys are misunderstanding what I meant.
If he just hold the glove out and let's the runner slide into it (without unnecessarily sweeping it, and holding it up in the umpire's face) there's no question.
Guys put their glove in front of the bag "all the time" and let base stealers "tag themselves out".
He obviously was avoiding any contact.
Anyway... Should be interesting tonight.

The problem with that is it's easier to knock the ball out of the catcher's mitt than a regular glove. If he holds his glove out there, there's a good chance Lugo knocks it out. And if he uses both hands, he probably couldn't recover in time to throw out Proctor, though it wouldn't have mattered since he fell down and McKenry would have had time to throw him out. You can't assume that, however. McKenry did what he felt he had to do, and it's the ump's fault he didn't get the call.

Bucs have lost 5 of their last 6 games. Looks like the lack of offense and all of the injuries are finally starting to catch up to them.
Oh well, let's see where they end up, because they aren't going to win the division. They may as well stand pat at the deadline rather than give up some of the future for a slight chance at a winning record/division title. Hate to sound like I'm giving up on them, but I just can't see them going anywhere even with the very good starting pitching. You need to score runs to beat good teams.

At this point. We can just hope they have a winning season.
The Bucs have been getting by on fabulous pitching. But the top tier teams can also hit. The Bucs have gotten by mediocre offense for a while. That'll fly against the Scubs and the Astros, but as we've seen against the Cards, teams that can hit. The Bucs don't have the stuff to keep up with their power.

My bad, I did forget about the win on Sunday, which makes it 5 of 7. Still not a good record and it isn't going to get much better, unfortunately. Even if they add a bat to the lineup, is this person going to make up the lost offense on the DL and the struggles of Alvarez and McCutchen all by himself? I doubt it.

I like Hunter Pence. He would have been my choice if the Pirates were going to pull the trigger. However, after seeing what Philthy gave up to get him, I am even more convinced that standing pat is not the worst idea out there.
The headline pieces were Phillies top pitching prospect, Jarred Cosart, and their top hitting prospect, Jonathan Singleton. The Phillies made those two the centerpieces of their original offer for Pence early this week.
The 21-year-old Cosart was 9-8 with a 3.92 ERA in 20 games, 19 starts, for Clearwater.
The 19-year-old Singleton was batting .282 with nine homers and 47 RBIs for Class A Clearwater. He was selected by the Phillies in the eighth round of the 2009 draft.
Rebuilding Houston also got 25-year-old righty Josh Zeid, who was 2-3 with two saves and a 5.65 ERA in 21 games, 11 starts, for Double-A Reading.
The fourth player will be named later......
http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/6817280/philadelphia-phillies-complete-deal-astros-hunter-pence
Four prospects? Two of which are your number one hitting and pitching prospects? Obviously, I don't know how many other real prospects Philly has, but that is a steep price for a team to give up who already is the best team in baseball.

After seeing what the Giants gave up for Beltran and now the Phillies for Pence, I'd be thrilled if the Pirates stood pat. A lot of fans will be pissed off, and management will be ridiculed once again, but it's the smartest thing they can do. No need to give up some of the prospects they've added to their farm system over the past 3 years in order to bring in a guy who may or may not help them get a winning record or win the division.

I was in Lancaster PA this weekend among Philly fans. They were very complementary about the Pirates and we had a nice calm discussion. For some reason that made me uneasy. Then it occurred to me, that was an indication of just how far the Pirates have fallen lo these last 18 years. Having a old rival happy your team is having a bit of success is really not a good thing. I mean, if we were talking Flyers, we would have been jawing back and forth(still friendly).
Hopefully, the Pirates are on a path that someday Phillies' fans and Pirates' can properly "hate" on each other.' ...... oh what a beautiful world that would be.
