Goodell also addressed protecting defenseless players against low hits. Goodell indicated the competition committee will look at possible rule changes, but those changes would not address hits like the one that shelved (http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap2000000294204/Rob-Gronkowski-carted-off-field) New England Patriots (http://www.nfl.com/teams/newenglandpatriots/profile?team=NE) tight end Rob Gronkowski on Sunday. Proposals are more likely to be centered on hits like the one that took out Miami Dolphins (http://www.nfl.com/teams/miamidolphins/profile?team=MIA) tight end Dustin Keller. Keller was hit while in the act (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000231458/article/dustin-keller-knee-out-for-miami-dolphins-season) of catching the ball.

The competition committee is expected to discuss rules on low hits at February's Scouting Combine

now I am all for making the game safer but at the end of the day this is football , if you keep taking away from the game before you know it all you have left of the game is the name only ....

sure we want players to be safe and have a long career but injuries are part of the game itself and impart why they are paid so much money to "play" a game 99% of us played for free as kids , granted none of the people playing against us was 350 pounds ( well except the one kid that lived down the street ) but he couldn't catch us anyways .... at some point you just have to let them play the game to much thinking takes the instinct away from playing and that is a very important aspect of the game

Ya know, a friend of mine told me tackling a player in the midsection might possibly cause damage to the recipients internal organs. Word on the street is Commissioner Goodell is working on a revolutionary new concept to protect NFL players from this: no tackling. That's right, now, defenders must scare offensive players into falling to the ground sans contact. Riddell is working on a line of helmets that display artwork of bigfoot, Frankenstein and ghosts to help defenders adapt to the new rule. The Patriots just hired Mike Wazowski as their new "fright coordinator."

Yep. See Bob Chandler (ex-Bills/Raiders WR) and Chris Simms and their ruptured spleens. Like Dwins said, give it a few more years and they'll be playing flag football.

What is Goodell's next brilliant idea, inviting Anton Chigurh to do the coin toss at next year's Super Bowl?

Let lawyers get a hold of anything and they can't leave it alone. Before we know it, the rulebook will be 2 million pages and will ban everything up to and including breathing. Pretty pathetic.

This "game" is already three hours of burdonsome bureaucracy, cover your butt calls by the refs, and tedious waiting while some numbskull has his head under a black tarp. If you would have told me ten years ago that you cant tackle a receiver IN THE ACT of catching the ball I would have laughed. NOW?....not so funny.

Yea, let's add even more rules about when and where you're not allowed to hit a player. The refs can't even get it right with the rules that we have now.

They should wear some kind of exoskeleton to help protect the players and also identify areas from which to grab and tackle. Anything beyond those areas is a penalty. Of course, you change the name because it is no longer football, but it is something the league can do to make it look like they are doing something.

Maybe they can just take it all the way and swap out the real players for those football-playing robots they have on the Fox pregame show. Most people are probably too brainless to care.

2015+1 day. Many fans now realize that this is Rugby rules for tackling and have been for decades.
2016 People still get hurt. Hines Ward proved correct. If you want to stop devastating and illegal hits, remove the helmets (and pads).
