Just realized we didn't have a thread for the new season yet, its not offseason anymore!

Lets Go Buccos!!

I know the game is still 0-0 but I like our lineup and pitching so far.

Thank you phew I totally forgot as well! GO BUCCOS!

1-0 Phils. I can't complain Bedard has pitched a great game so far and Halladay has done what he always does, dominates. 3 Innings left to work, Go Bucs!

steelpride12
04-05-2012, 02:53 PM
Bucs lose 1-0 what can I say Halladay allowed two hits and dominated as he usually does on a game to game basis. Bucs found to offense, but I was happy with Bedards pitching. He kept the Phils blanked until the 7th inning and had solid control of his pitches all day. 0-1 against Halladay I can't be upset. GO BUCS!

As soon as Bedard gave up that run, I knew the game was over. Tough matchup against one of the best pitchers in the game. Can't get upset about that.

It would have been nice if they won, but it was a tough match up and Eric did a great job today, I was very impressed.

Awesome walk off single by Alex. That was great and what this team needed to help jump start this season! Did anyone see Cutch chasing after Alex with a bat after the single? Pens won, Buccos won, today was a good day.

Blow for blow, that pretty much has been the name of the game for this series. However, the Phillies are winning it today. Come on Bucs.

steelerdude15
04-08-2012, 03:46 PM
And once again the Pirates prove me wrong. Just when you think the game is starting to slip away, the Battlin' Bucs fight back. You also have to love the douche bag Philly media making the Phillies out to be the best and have already won the World Series. Fuck em, we owned Philly's ass this weekend.

While the bats were not there for the first homestand to come away with taking 2 of 3 from the Phillies is a pretty good start. Kudos to the entire Pirates pitching staff. Only 4 earned runs over 28 innings. It may be a blessing to get this west coast road trip out of the way early and maybe catch some of the big arms a little off. They will have to face Kershaw tomorrow since he only pitched 3 innings before the flu caught up to him on his opening day start. Hopefully he hasn't fully recovered.

Go Bucs!

Tonight is the final game of the series between the Pirates and Dodgers. The Pirates need to win tonight to have .500 record. The Dodgers have started off really strong this year and are showing it. The Pirates' pitching has actually been good and same thing with defense. The issue from last year that has continued into this season so far is little offense. The Bucs need to hit more balls.

Problem is they have faced some very tough pitching so far - Halladay, Lee, Kershaw and Billingsley. 3 of the 4 have won Cy Young Awards. Not easy to score runs off those guys.

Yup. That is something that has to be taken into account. Since they beat the one and barely lost to the other two, can't complain too much.

I actually think we look pretty good. The series against the dodgers was humbling, but LA is playing lights out right now. Another tough series against SF starts today (if the rain here holds off). I'll be at the game Sunday, hopefully they pull out the win.

steelerdude15
04-13-2012, 09:14 AM
Other than that first inning, the Pirates played pretty good last night. This was probably their best game of the series. Pitching was great once again, the defense and Cutch were great, but we need more offense!

04-13-2012, 09:24 AM
My Cardinals are playing very well so far. Signing Carlos Beltran is looking like a great move so far. David Freese picking up right where he left off. We have so many good hitters I knew losing Albert wouldn't be a HUGE deal. Long way to go though.

I think you may be in denial of you don't think losing Pujols is huge...he's the best player I've ever seen play the game. I think you'll be ok as you said, you have a lot of offense on your team, but it always hurts to lose arguably the greatest player this generation has ever seen.

X-Terminator
04-13-2012, 02:58 PM
Beltran is no Pujols, that's for damn sure. That would be like the Penguins without Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin. Yeah, they'd be just fine with either of them, but they are so much better with both of them.

steelerdude15
04-13-2012, 03:48 PM
Another game where the Pirates let the team score in the first inning. This has to come to an end.

steelerdude15
04-13-2012, 03:54 PM
So this is the fifth out of seven games where they've trailed coming out of the first inning. This is completely unnecessary.

steelerdude15
04-13-2012, 04:49 PM
The more I watch Pedro, the more convinced he's a bust.

steeldevil
04-13-2012, 09:43 PM
Yeah we would obviously be better with him, not saying that at all. Just saying that the group of good hitters on the roster kind of buffers him leaving a bit. In other words it would be a whole lot worse if we didnt have those good hitters in place like Freese, Holliday, Molina, Berkman, and Beltran. Its bad but it could be worse.

Havent been able to see a game yet though...

I hope the Pirates can compete for 2nd this year! Just not 1st hopefully.

steelerdude15
04-15-2012, 08:31 PM
Good win today by the Pirates. A much needed one at that. Last night was a little tough, but a good game. Today's game was good in that they outplayed the Giants. A little shaky at the end with Joel, but pretty good around.

Great win for the Bucs last night. Seems the offense is coming from where it is expected with Cutch, Neil, and G.I. Jone. Alvarez almost popped a HR, but was robbed I'll admit it. McGee has come up big as well. Let's clean up the control with the pitching and get back to .500. GO BUCS!

Burnetts first game tonight. He went over 7 innings and posted a 3 hit shutout, I'm impressed and hope he keeps this up for the rotation. Buccos win 2-0. Still worried about the slumping offense, but think they can improve! GO BUCS!

Don't worry, steelpride12, he will disappoint soon. He looks completely unhittable in 1 outing and then he pitches so flat that his fastball is easy to hit out. We had great hopes for him in Toronto and I see he did not change much in New York. Hope he wins 20, but his history is pretty consistent.

2-run homer for Tabata in the 3rd and it's a 2-1 Bucs lead. If these bats can wake up and stay consistant with the combination of the great pitching we can get over the .500 mark.

I have as well. Pitching has been incredible for our standards except for a few games. Batting however has to become more consistent and Pedro is starting to wake up. Even though they're losing right now, I can still see one win coming out of this series.

Yeah, inconsistency has been a problem for a long time. When this team is consistent in hitting, defense, and pitching, they're a really good team that could possibly take on anyone. For example, we took two out of three against Boston last year and two out of three against the Phillies and Diamondbacks to open up the season. Two great teams and one really good team. Also, the Pirates were on fire last night against the Reds. James McDonald pitched extremely well with seven strikeouts, the defense was great with Barmes making some awesome plays, and the hitting was pretty good with two homers. Then, you have today where Charlie Morton couldn't do anything and even Hurdle called him out for being inconsistent. There was no offense either. Its frustrating to say the least.

Just strange how some games we post up 10 runs like it's nothing, but like today can't score a single run. Same with the pitching. Some nights they shut out their opponents and the next day they give up 13 runs.

Yeah, that's one thing I've noticed. I'd say the two best pitchers as of right now are Bedard and McDonald. They are pitching lights out right now. I'd say our biggest concern, other than the inconsistency, is hitting. I will say, I'm quite impressed with Pedro so far. He leads the team with seven homers, fifteen RBIs, but also leads with twenty six strikeouts.

Pedro has been most impressive, but will he keep this up after the All-Star Break well see about that. Cutch has been sick, but him and Neil have done their job, but Barmes has been a bust and hitting under .200 is sad.

I'd say his defense has been better than Cedros, but his hitting is horrid. Boy I can't wait till they bring up Josh Bell. I really hope hes a beast when he makes it to the pro level. I'll actually be able to see him if hes still in single A in June.

It's a reference to "Dude, Where's My Car," but I don't know exactly what they're referencing from the movie.

BTW, that's 3 in a row tonight against a tough Marlins squad. It's great they are where they are, but it's still frustrating to watch them attempt to hit. They'd better hope the pitching doesn't falter like last season, because their offense sure as hell isn't going to improve much.

steelpride12
05-15-2012, 06:51 PM
The "S" sign is actually the "Z" from "Dude Where's My Car." It means Zoltan if you watched the movie you would understand. I'm still confident in this team. They won the last two series and at worst split this one against a great Marlins team. The pitching has been on fire and if these bats get hot they will be a good club. 1-1 now against the animal Josh Johnson, beating him would make the Bucs feel great and also get them to .500.

GO BUCS!

steelpride12
05-15-2012, 07:24 PM

steelpride12

Talk about a scary game tonight, but we won the season series against the Nats. James had an awesome pitching performance until the sixth inning and he fell, but luckily the defense, offense, and bull pen saved. it. By the way, James struck out eleven tonight which is not a only a season record, but its also a career record for him. Cutch was on fire with two home runs and an amazing juggling catch while hitting the wall. Just amazing.

Well, the thing about Barmes is that he was picked up for his defense, not his offense. This is something that I think many of our fellow Pirates fans seem to forget.

I understand that, but he still has his errors and getting someone purely for defense is not the best tactic, I'm they they at least expect .200 out of him.

Hell of a come back win against the Mets. Another sad home game for Bedard, but it was nice to see some offense come alive after being down 4 runs and McKenry with the two run shot. Let's get 2-3 in this series were only 2.5 games back.

The Pirates have done extremely well these last four games. With today's win, the Pirates have five hundred record. The team has played consistently which is a must to win. Pitching, batting, and defense have really come together. I like what I'm seeing from our bullpen, Pedro is hitting well, and everyone else is doing their part to keep winning. They swept the Cubs and have one against the Reds, lets go Bucs!

Bucs thrilled to grab Stanford's Appel at No. 8

Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft was proceeding with some first-round surprises Monday night when the Pirates pulled the biggest.

With the overall No. 8 pick, the Bucs chose the pitcher who had begun the day as the probable No. 1 on most insiders' lists. But after every team ahead of them passed on Mark Appel, the Pirates didn't, jumping at the opportunity to add the 6-foot-4, 195-pound Stanford right-hander to their pitching lode.

"We were very pleased that he was still sitting there when it was our selection," said Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington. "We don't know why [other teams] chose players over him; different teams have different interpretations of players."

From what I understand, he is one of the best pitchers in the draft. Many feel he is a complete package. Does anyone else think its odd that both the Pirates and the Steelers drafted someone from Stanford in the first round of their drafts?

To add on to that, not only have they won these two series back to back on the road, but they've now won FOUR series in the row, all against NL Central rivals. First the Cubs, then Reds, then Brewers, and finally against the Reds tonight. This game went down to the wire. Blow for blow, it was like a game of chess, but we had the final blow. Great article about Clint Hurdle by Dejan Kovacevic:

CINCINNATI Clint Hurdle is a difficult man to describe to those who don't deal with him regularly. But I won't lie: I had set out this week to pen what I hoped would be a definitive, detailed, adjective-laced column on the personality of the Pirates' manager.

And I decided against it.

If only because others could do it so, so much better ...

Don't look now folks, but your Buccos are 4 games over .500 and just a game out of first place...in June. Personally, it's amazing to me how well they've done despite having next to no offense until the last couple of weeks (12 straight games of 4+ runs scored, translating into a 9-3 record...coincidence? I don't think so). I'm still waiting for the inevitable collapse, because just like last season, the pitching is eventually going to run out of steam and I'm not expecting the offense to be able to carry the load.

I'm just enjoying it! For the first time in awhile I think we have a decent shot at breaking .500 and who knows, once they get a taste of winning if the get the division lead they might make a run for a playoff spot. we lucky don't have a very tough division so as long as we hold on for awhile we will stay in the race.

Then of course I'll stand up and cheer all night long. But the Pirates were in first place and had won 54 games in late July last year...then won just 18 games the rest of the season. I'll believe they won't collapse when it actually doesn't happen. Until then, I will enjoy the ride.

Just looking at their upcoming schedule:

3 at O's
3 at Indians
3 vs Twins

If they win 6 of those 19 games, I'll be stunned. That is a BRUTAL schedule.

The Pirates might actually be buyers in the trade market this year

Normally at the trade deadline, the Pittsburgh Pirates turn into a de facto minor league team for big-market teams like the Red Sox and Yankees.

This year, it looks like the roles could be reversing, with the Pirates currently leading the NL Central, and the Red Sox sitting in last place in the AL East.

As of right now, the Pirates are one of a few teams reportedly interested in Red Sox 1B/3B Kevin Youkilis.

Red Sox GM Ben Cherington has said that Youkilis isn't on the market, but any knowledgeable baseball fan could take one look at the Red Sox and see that Cherington is lying through his teeth.

What does everyone think of this? I wouldn't exactly call this a reliable source so it could be completely made up. I just checked his stats and he's only hitting .231. Does anyone think if he does come and play for the Pirates that he would actually have more hits because he's playing in a weaker division? :noidea:

This years' Pirates are further along than last years team.

The 2011 Team didn't get above .500 until late June. So there's something a little different this year. I don't know if this team has enough to get it into the upper-echelon, but I think it's evidence that the 2011 team's surge was no fluke. For the first time in years, we have a Pirates squad with potential. This team has the potential to be something great, but time will tell if it's ever realized.

There was quite a few Pirates fans and once again, they made me proud by showing our class when some of the obnoxious Beltway fans started acting up. Overall, majority of the O's fans were respectful. Our fans had a good time, were very respectful, and a few were really funny. Anyways to the game, wasn't exactly their best game, but they did almost have a comeback. Lincoln was picked apart from the get go and was the entire time he pitched. Resop who is usually good was not good last night and I don't know what he was thinking when he made that horrible throw to first which made the runners advanced. Great way to bounce back, especially after what happened in Baltimore, although 2-4 wasn't the ideal roadtrip, I'll take it considering the circumstances.

With the injuries that have infested this team, dare we bring up Locke and see what he can do as a starter. I am not sure how comfortable I am with sending Lincoln out every fifth day AT THIS POINT. Although I am willing to let him work his way through.

Pedro seems to finally seems to be waking up (but didn't we see that a couple of weeks ago:rofl:) None the less it's good to see him get four home runs on this road trip. The thing to keep in mind though with him, is that he is a streaky batter (He was like that in Altoona too).

Anyway, get a good rest, and see if they can go 4-2 on the homestand against a Twins team that they can get fat off of, and a Detroit team they can snag a game or two off of.

I'd also like to thank Charlie Manuel for choosing to pitch to Cutch in the 8th with a base open and down by 2 runs. Cutch promptly hits a 2-run HR to put them up by 4. What in the world was he thinking?

Way to step up offense on an off-night for the pitching.

3 vs Twins
3 vs Tigers
4 at Phillies
3 at Cards

If they win 6 of those 19 games, I'll be stunned. That is a BRUTAL schedule.

The pirates are 8-8 right now

We here in the Burgh are wondering the same thing. Meanwhile, Starling Marte continues to tear up AAA pitching and was named to the International League All-Star Game, and hasn't gotten so much as a look from the Bucs.

This month, the Pirates are 16-10, with series wins over the Reds, Indians and Tigers, and a split with Phillies; have hit 38 HR, which is one shy of the team record for any month, and have scored 138 runs, which is the most in the majors. They have also hit 46 of their 72 HR on the road, which tells you how much of a pitcher's park PNC is and why the team is absolutely right to bulk up the organization with pitching as much as we all complain about the lack of hitting. They are also 21-11 since May 23. What a roll they have been on. Just got to hope they can keep it rolling through the second half, especially with the schedule being much more favorable.

Even though the Pirates sweep the Cardinals, I'm happy with them taking the series. I did get to see the West Virginia Power, which is the single a farm team of the Pirates against the local Delmarva Shorebirds. They won 15-10 and had twenty-one hits. I carefully watched Alen Hanson. He's third base and was a beast. He's leading the team with a .334 BA and played good defense. I was a little disappointed I didn't get to see Josh Bell. Plus we sat down extremely low to the field and go to go for free!

They sent Tabata down, I was hoping they would bring up Marte, but they brought up Gorky instead.
From Dejan Kovacevic on Twitter:

Just spoke with another #Pirates official here at PNC Park who says the team's plan for Starling Marte is to shift around the outfield in Indianapolis, most likely through the All-Star break. There is ZERO question of his readiness. It's about corner outfield and about not having a long pause immediately after he arrives. This person said Marte's performance at the plate right now is "through the roof." Marte has made several starts in left but the one Monday was his first.

For those asking why RF for Starling Marte rather than LF, given his superior defensive skill, it's because they're trying to set up the outfield for the long term. Wrote about this back in the spring. Marte has an 80 arm, highest grade on the 20-80 scouting scale. That can be a great weapon home and road, whereas playing LF only helps at home. But obviously, someone needs to step up in left. Alex Presley hasn't done it so far. Neither did Jose Tabata.

The Cards are missing some key pieces (Berkman, Garcia, Carpenter now done for the season), but Matheny is an awful manager. With all of that talent, the Cards should be much better than they are and are even where they are now in spite of him. They need to dump him at the end of the season regardless of where they finish.

As for the Bucs, I'm still waiting for the annual 12-game losing streak and subsequent collapse, so I'm not getting overly excited. I'm just enjoying the ride while it lasts.

Pirates place OF Presley on DL with concussion

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed outfielder Alex Presley on the 7-day disabled list with a concussion and recalled Jordy Mercer from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Presley injured himself while attempting to make a diving catch in Tuesday's 8-7 victory over Houston. Presley stayed in the game briefly before complaining of neck pain and whiplash. Manager Clint Hurdle spoke to Presley on Thursday before deciding Presley needed extra time to recover.

Presley is hitting .242 with six homers and 13 RBI in 60 games this season while working mostly in the leadoff spot for the Pirates, who began play on Thursday in first place in the National League Central.

Mercer is 1 for 9 in five games with Pittsburgh this season.

The Pirates actually have the 4th best record in the majors, behind only the Yankees, Rangers and Nationals. Their 27-13 home record is the best in the majors and they are 24-11 since May 25, which is the 2nd best record in the majors in that time span. If they can somehow get to 12 games over .500 by Sunday, they might - might - have a legitimate shot at breaking the streak since their schedule gets considerably weaker after the break. I still think they need another starting pitcher and bat if they really want to make a run, but at the same time, this winning stretch can't last forever. The 8-12 game losing streak is in there somewhere - I just know it.

Well, there has been a lot of talk on the Pirates' site about them going to the World Series...sorry, but it ain't happening. They may have an easier schedule in the 2nd half, but it means nothing if they don't win the games. And I agree, but I think after this series you are trying to prove the point that the season is over, or that the Bucs are back to normal form, but I don't think you can make a single conclusion from 1 series. Yes we are all scared to death that it will be like last season, but we don't win on that field often and at least we weren't swept. How is this team not as good as their record shows? They've beaten top notch teams with great pitching, good defense, and good hitting. We have a good starting rotation with Jeff, James, and A.J., our defense has been stellar other than a few mishaps here and there, and our offense is much improved compared to last year. They're hitting the ball much better and hitting even more home runs. We even have a few players (A.J., Rob, and Casey) who have playoff and WS experience that is bringing valuable leadership to this team. To top it all off, the atmosphere is much improved and they all seem to be really enjoying themselves and actually believe in themselves. Winning majority of their games against the Nationals, Phillies, Cardinals, Reds, Indians, and Tigers sounds pretty good to me on account they're all good teams.

He sees it that way because he is at the point where until the season ends and the Pirates are on top or even just have an above .500 record it doesn't matter what they have done. In a way it's hard to blame him with 20 losing seasons, but then yes I agree with you 100%. You cannot even compare this season to last because the Bucs are well above those standards and stats.

Steelpride sums up part of my feelings, but the reason why I say they've overachieved and aren't really as good as their record is because they aren't a very good hitting team aside from Cutch. They had a lot of success offensively in June and the first week of July, but other than that, it's been awful. They are last in the ML in strikeouts...good teams aren't that bad with the bat in their hands, and it makes you wonder how much better the offense would be if they would simply make more contact. Their pitching has started to slide over the past couple of weeks on top of it, which is not good if the offense comes back down to earth. So no, I really don't believe in this team, for those reasons and because 19 seasons of failure makes you very skeptical, and I still believe the big, long losing streak is just around the corner. If it never happens, hey...I'll be thrilled. I WANT them to prove me wrong.

The Phillies, BTW, are one of the worst teams in baseball, so they don't really belong in that list.

I understand where you're coming from about being skeptical. I am as well to a certain degree, but I still believe in this team. I will say, that Walker is hitting better and I hope he keeps it up. I include the Phillies in that list because we've struggled to beat them for a long time.

One thing I will admit and I've always felt about Hurdle, he doesn't know when to pull his starting pitchers.

Pirates tie the game in the 9th with an Alvarez 3-run HR on the first pitch after the rain delay ended!

I'll be optimistic, at least they made a game of it. But they still lost to one of the worst teams in baseball, and that is not acceptable.

I agree. Thanks Pedro for helping us get back into the game, but we shouldn't lose to the worst teams. This one did hurt.

Much better game tonight even though the bottom of the ninth was getting a little scary. Bedard finally gets another win and the offense was smashing them tonight. Tomorrow they close out the series.

Hope J-Mac got his bad game out of his system and puts up a decent performance. They should score some runs off Guthrie, but then again, it took them 8 innings before they finally got something off the Rockies Monday night, so he'll probably shut them out.

Alright much better win last night, felt good to watch the offense soar. Let's hope for J-Mac to get on his groove once again today and finish this series on a high note.
