Has Mason Rudolph Been Given A Fair Shot To Play/Start?

Asked if he feels as if he’s getting a fair shot to play/start for the Steelers right now, Mason Rudolph says he’s thankful he has the chance to be in the NFL

He’s no starter but I also don’t think he’s been given a fair chance to be the QB2.

To start the seasons, he was QB1 in 2019, QB2 in 2020, QB2 in 2021. He had three years to prove it. What more opportunities would he need? He played plenty of preseason snaps. Aside from benching people in front of him, what else should they do?

He’s 5-4-1 as a starter and I think he can serve as QB2 better than Trubisky based on what I’ve seen from both. Some guys are also late bloomers. Mitch had his second chance and royally failed. I’d like to see if Mason can at least be a game manager.

I also would rather see MR over MT. But they should both be upgraded this draft.

Count me as one of the people who feel that Rudolph was never given a fair shot. When he played, he was definitely better than Trubisky. But he may not be better now because of all the rust that has accumulated. I still think he deserves a chance, because he can't be any worse.

When choosing between poop and poop lite....who cares?

Remember some guy named Duck outplayed Mason for most of a season.

There’s a big difference when you walk into the men’s room immediately after!!

I find it laughable that folks still use Duck as a reason not to play Mason while at the same time questioning Tomlin's ability to see talent at QB.

Looking back I think Mason was compared to Ben and when he didn't come in and immediately light it up people bashed him like he stole something.

Then there was the Lions tie game where we gave up 230 yards on the ground and DJ and Muth fumbled after catching passes and somehow it was all Mason's fault because he missed a TD pass in the RZ. No idea if he would've panned out but I always wanted Mason to get a full camp and a year as the starter to see if he had anything.

but honestly, I think all our QB's look bad in our offenses because its just too predictable.

agreed, MR had the misfortune of being cast as Ben’s heir apparent, so he got immediate comparisons. and he got no effective support from our illustrious OC and QB coaches. If we’re being honest, he has been better than Mitch. He should be no 2 right now and really should’ve been the primary backup to start the season.

I think it is safe to assume by the contract MR signed that he got zero offers from 31 other teams as a FA. He fell to the 3rd round in the draft. His NFL stock has only fallen. I do not believe MR is any part of the answer at QB. I have no problem playing him over MT though. That speaks more to how little I trust in Trubisky. Play one, play the other. It’s the same to me.

I'm glad you mentioned that. Mason got all kinds of grief for not beating the then-lowly Lions, but the bashers all seemed to forget that twice during the OT Mason was driving them down the field for the winning touchdown or field goal when both drives were stopped by a receiver fumbling away a good pass that Mason had thrown to him.

I saw enough of Rudolph to see that he sucks and not be particularly concerned about his getting more of a chance to suck, but given that we're down to him now, sure, I hope he lights the Bengals up and proves himself our franchise QB of the future.

we don’t know the whole story on that. The Garret incident could’ve played a role. I don’t believe for a second that Rudolph is worse than the 31 other backups. To be fair he’s somewhere in the middle, that’s why I think something other than skill was a factor

I think maybe Rudolph has gotten to that point in his career that he is that veteran back up QB that we’ve been clamoring for over the last Ben years?

This hopefully puts a little less pressure on the QB hunt in the off-season
