Good Steelers stuff in Todd Haley interview

Exclusive with Former Steelers Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley, 2012-2017

First off, tell us what’s going on with you now and what’s next? Well I’m at a crossroads. It’s been 26 years of coaching and I’m 52 now. I’ve been afforded some time while I’m still under contract to think about what’s next and to make up some lost time with my family. I’ve watched more soccer and golf games lately than I had over the last 20 years. My parents are in Orlando and they aren’t doing so great so it’s good to be close to them too. So, it’s been really nice not to have to jump into anything. I love coaching and if the right thing comes along sure, but for right now I’m enjoying my time with my family.

Obviously your father was a big influence on you as coach – who else influenced that style as well and how?
Well my father always reminded me of how fortunate I was to grow up with it as a kid and he was right. The memories of being there at camp in Latrobe as a kid and on the sidelines for things like the Immaculate Reception.
I grew up with the NFL – it was my whole life. I’d watch Hall of Fame players every day with the Steelers – it was such a huge advantage seeing what great players did to be great. Lambert was always my idol – we’d fight as kids to see who would get to wash his car in camp......

    LOL ...

Watching Lambert – in the locker room Swann and Stallworth would throw balls to each other in the locker room before games and Lambert would be sitting at his locker smoking cigarettes by himself. It was like a forcefield around him – if one of the balls went past those guys and rolled to Lambert, they’d just leave it there. No one would get it!

Lambert might have been a hard ass and a dick to other players wanting his own space and left alone, but he was very good to kids. I saw him sign autograph after autograph and take pics with kids by the bunches before heading to the locker room - even saw him throw a football with a couple kids. He always talked real nice to kids (I was one of them!). That's what made him a favorite. He was tough as nails and a major bad ass, but good to the fans, particularly kids.

How many would take BA or Haley over Fichtner right now?

I'd take Haley back, but Ben's protection has to be priority.

No to BA only because Ben it's old and his system would kill Ben

I'd take Haley back in a heartbeat.

    Nice interview. Thanks for posting.

Interesting to hear about Terry Bradshaw and Joe Gilliam throwing it 90 yards to each other.

There were some things I didn’t like about Haley but he did really prolong Ben’s career and make him a better QB.

If we had Arians, we wouldn’t have TJ Watt. Why? Arians was instrumental on leaking draft picks to the local media... which then got stolen away by other teams. The best example bring Darrelle Revis. No one had Revis mocked anywhere near the first half of R1. Tomlin was definitely going to draft Revis... except... Arians had told several reporters about this. In turn, the Jets stole him away.

If we had Haley, we would not have Ben. Period. As much as Haley lengthened Ben’s career, the two of them simply did not get along. Ben would have forced a trade.

    SUMMATION:
It would have been (would still be?) nice to hire someone from outside of the organization... like Eric Bieniemy.

Haley did express regret in his part of that.

No doubt. Many people regret their actions... after it’s too late. It’s a rare breed that can see the problem while inside of it (and change their behavior in order to improve the situation).

There is no way I want Tequila Cowboy back. Ben hates him and he is an embarrassment. I was thrilled when he was gone and he can stay gone.
