Newton struggles in loss to Bengals

Carolina rookie quarterback Cam Newton took a step back on his road to NFL stardom.

Cincinnati's Andy Dalton, another rookie, took a huge leap forward.


Dalton, Cincinnati's second-round draft pick from Texas Christian, led four first-half scoring drives and the Bengals held on for a 24-13 preseason victory Thursday night.

Dalton was an efficient 11 of 17 for 130 yards and a touchdown for Cincinnati (1-2), putting together a 107.5 quarterback rating, a vast improvement over the 30.9 figure he took into the game. He credited a running game that finished with 191 yards, 63 in the first quarter, which he said helped open up the passing game.............

Cam Newton has the deck stacked against him...but I think he has a better chance than Tebow.

Liked Dalton going into the draft. Hopefully the curse of the Bungles hits him and he doesn't become a thorn in our side.

Newton looks awful so far. I have watched all 3 of their preseason games on tv and Clausen looks much better.

Yeah, Newton has been pretty awful passing the ball thus far. He was pretty electrifying when he took off running, but it's going to be a tough learning curve for him to succeed as a passer.

I really liked the game Dalton played last night. He's not going to be a gun slinger by any means, but he's smart and accurate, which gives me hope that he can win some games on down the line. I also really like the fact that our wide receivers actually block and run the right routes.

But the players on your team do. It could very well effect their play. Little red welts all over them...itching and irritating them all game long.

We are way too quick to crown pretenders as the next great "thing". Give Cam a year or 2, if he is still around, then we can start talking about his chances of becoming a QB.
