Bengals' new offense dismal in opener

So much for getting rookie quarterback Andy Dalton a little confidence in his pro debut.

Dalton's first pass was well off-target and intercepted. His second was severely overthrown. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis left his offense in for the entire first half of Cincinnati's preseason opener, hoping to get a score against the Lions' backups.

    Couldn't even do that.

The Bengals are trying to get over a numbing 34-3 loss in Detroit on Friday night that was their most lopsided preseason defeat in franchise history...........

    I do not have bedbugs!!!

We had our medical office checked for them. Those dogs are pretty cool to watch.

Tip from bedbug guy..... don't sit in the middle of movie theaters. That's where the dogs are most likely to alert. Sit anywhere but the middle.

It might almost be nice to be living down there this season knowing how awful the Bungles are going to be, while you march around with your Steelers jersey on!

I know it was a preseason game.
I know I should give a lot of credit to Detroit's defense.
I know that teams have only been practicing togeher for about 2 weeks.

But this... this made me laugh. So. Hard.
This season may go down as one of my favorites, even if the Steelers have a losing season. But because Cincinnati will be, at best, 2-14 this season.

You don't have to agree with me, but I do recomend it.

I want 4-12 at least. I dont want them getting Andrew Luck. Then again Luck might be better off pulling an Elway/Manning and just refusing to play for them.

Re: Bengals' new offense dismal in opener

Meh, the offense looked rough, but to say they looked dismal may be a bit of hyperbole.

I thought Dalton looked pretty decent for his first-ever NFL action. His first pass was an interception, but it was a deep throw that he ended up under-throwing because he ran into pressure as he stepped into it. But after that, he looked pretty comfortable. He actually ended up 11 of 15 (73.3% completions). Not too shabby, all in all.

Also, the Bengals were pretty much running at will against Detroit when Benson was in the game (6.2 yard a carry). Add in the fact that Green, Simpson, and Shipley didn't look too bad, and I think there's some promise there.

The main area of concern I saw was with the interior of the offensive line. Whitworth and Smith looked great at the tackle spots, but Bobbie Williams looked severely overweight and was getting beat like a rag doll against Suh. Kyle Cook also struggled a bit, and Nate Livings just sucks in general.

Overall, I think the offense didn't look too terrible considering they're running an entirely new scheme and have new starters at quarterback and both receiver spots. The backups looked pretty abysmal, but that's why they're backups, and everyone knows Jordan Palmer and Dan LeFevour suck.

    Bengals/Eagles super bowl!

Seriously, dude, you were running YOUR starters against their second string, and couldn't score.

Baghdad Bob wouldn't have spun it more positively than you did...

    Again with the hyperbole.

I didn't say the Bengals were going to have the best offense in the NFL, but their performance didn't exactly wreak of doom-and-gloom either.

The statement that the Bengals starters couldn't score against their second string is also pretty inaccurate. The Lions kept their defensive starters in for the entire first quarter, just as the Bengals did with their offensive starters...primarily because the Bengals' first drive was prevented by a fumbled kickoff and the second lasted only one play (an interception).

You may recall that the Ndamukong Suh penalty actually came on the Bengals' first team offense's second-to-last drive. The Bengals' first-team offense only had one drive against Detroit's backups and it ended in a missed 42-yard field goal.

Again, I'm not saying that the Bengals are going to set the world on fire offensively, but it wasn't exactly a dismal showing for a newly-installed offense led by a rookie QB in his first NFL action after a shortened off-season.

I find this sort of funny, because you would have been one of the first people to exclaim that "preseason is meaningless" if the Bengals offense had instead put up a ton of points. So, who is the spin artist, again?
