Labor peace sets off mad scramble in NFL
The Steelers didn't pop champagne corks Monday after the NFL lockout officially ended.
Time simply didn't permit it.
The new NFL collective bargaining agreement guarantees labor peace for 10 years and preserves all but one of the NFL's preseason games.
But it doesn't provide the extra hours in a day that general managers and negotiators are going to need to handle all of the player transactions that loom as training camp approaches.
As NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith jointly announced the labor deal that ended a four-plus month old impasse, teams were scrambling to get their franchises moving forward.
"It's fair to say we're in uncharted territory," Steelers president Art Rooney II said. "We've never had to start up a league year like this. It will be different, but every team is in the same boat. Once we get to September, I know that coach (Mike) Tomlin feels like we'll be prepared to play and that's got to be our mindset."........
