'Life coach' quits on JaMarcus Russell

Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell, who was selected first overall in the 2007 draft, no longer has former NBA player John Lucas working with him, according to a Yahoo! Sports report.

Lucas, who had been working with Russell as a “life coach” since last September, has aided troubled professional athletes over the years. The report attributed the split to Russell's apparent lack of effort in getting in shape.

“The title of your article should be, ‘It’s Over,’ ” an unnamed source told the website. “It’s just amazing that you could say that about somebody who is 25 years old and just got drafted four years ago. But it’s been almost a year since he got cut and there’s no interest. Even before the lockout, nobody wanted to get near the kid.”.............

Thanks for the story. Man what a disgrace. I mean Russell just took his guaranteed money, and decided to say F-YOU to the Raiders, and the league in general. This report should be the very argument for the owners wanting to reduce the newly drafted rookies huaranteed salary pool, and spread it out to the Vet players, and retired Injured players. Just because of J.Russell.

Might be even dumber than Leaf. At least he had the Raiders as an excuse--but if he doesn't show something, and very soon, nobody will give him another chance.

Really? What kind of excuse? What do the Raiders have to do with JR deciding to be a total loser? Please, enlighten me.

Well, it isn't JR's fault that Darius Heyward Bey fell down on deep routes or dropped passes that hit him between the numbers, or that the offensive line committed penalties whenever they got into the red zone, or that receivers tripped over each other on crossing routes. Big Ben couldn't have produced in that situation.

Maybe he was trying to eat away the pain of being on the Raiders.

Of course the Raiders' WR's suck. So what? What does that have to do with JR's lack of personal motivation to be a good QB? What does it have to do with JR's "purple drank" addiction? What does it have to do with JR coming to camp fat and out of shape... every year?

How come Campbell and Gradkowski had at least some modicum of success with the same bad WR's? I'm sorry, but just because the Raiders are a very bad team doesn't excuse JR from ANYTHING. He was paid to be a professional and work toward becoming the franchise QB he was drafted to be. He's just a loser that got lucky, nothing more. His current "situation" proves this to be the truth.

Those are all self-inflicted, and it's why nobody will give him a second chance.

Exactly. He's a f**k up. He was given the opportunity of a lifetime... and he decided to squander it.
