More evidence Steelers need CB help

With the reigning AFC champion Pittsburgh Steelers thin at cornerback and Ike Taylor about to hit free agency, we have more statistical evidence why it's vital for Pittsburgh to address this need in the offseason.


According to ESPN's Stats and Information, NFL offenses are increasingly using three or more receivers, which dictates personnel on defense. In 2010 teams lined up three or more receivers on offense 48.2 percent of the time, up from 46.1 percent in 2009 and 45.7 percent in 2008.

As a result, defenses needed to use three or more cornerbacks on 48.5 percent of snaps last season. For Pittsburgh, that means some combination of backups William Gay, Anthony Madison and Crezdon Butler would need to see the field on nearly half of the defense's plays. .............

Excellent article with great empirical data!!!!

I love these type of articles, because I have to think that the Steelers front office is crunching these type of stats when making their draft need decisions.

Okay LLT, Lets say I agree with you, and everyone who thinks we need to draft a DB. And some have written mocks where the steelers select say Williams of Texas at 31, or maybe even Brandon Harris at 31. Now, I have no real issues with either of those guys per se. But I DO have a problem with the Colorado CB Jimmy Smith. I'm sorry but I just don't like his Brash attitude. His soft style or his reportedly bad work habits. However LLT, I did see this story this morning.....

Now LLT, we all know that Jimmy Smith won't make it to pick 37 when the Browns select again. And we know that they won't select him at the top of round 1 ( Duh )...but LLT, if Smith should make it to us at 31, would you, and everyone else deal down to 37 with the Browns ? And they give us their 4th rounder at 102 ? Then deal down again with SF, give them the 37th pick for their 45 and 108 picks ? Then at 45 we select the DB that alot of us like, Ras-I Dowling. And then at 63 maybe take a D-Line guy, like K Ellis, IF he is still there. ? That way we would have 3, 4th rounders. Two rather early, so we can grab the always surprrising few players who always slip past the first three rounds. And also have our late 4th rounder to secure the Nebraska Kicker " Henery "...so he doesn't get selected somewhere in round 5 ?

Im not a big fan of Smith either but I do apperciate his talent and his size/speed...

Ras-I Dowling is one of my favorite CB's in this draft and I am up for ANY scenerio in which we can trade down into the second round and get him.

If I could come out of the second round with OT Marcus Cannon & CB Ras I Dowling, I would be very pleased but I think your scenerio of Dowling and Ellis is actually more probable
