Angry According to Habs, Pacioretty suffered a severe concussion and fractured 4th cervical

    Chara

Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty suffered a severe concussion and a fractured vertebrae on Tuesday, according to Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier.

Pacioretty was injured late in the second period of Montreal's 4-1 win over the Boston Bruins Tuesday when Bruins defenceman Zdeno Chara ran him into the turnbuckle that frames the glass partition between the players' benches.

The 22-year-old rookie, who had four points in his last four games, was trying to get past Chara on the play when he was hit hard and went head-first into the glass partition between the benches.

Pacioretty lay motionless for several minutes with his eyes closed before being taken from the ice on a stretcher.

Chara had a conference call with NHL vice-president of hockey operations Mike Murphy at Noon et Wednesday where it was expected he will be suspended. He was given a five-minute major for interference and a game misconduct for the hit.

Pacioretty had 14 goals and 10 assists in 37 games with the Habs since being called up from AHL Hamilton in early December.

I can understand you being angry, but in the same breath if he hit him anywhere else besides where the turnbuckle is it would have been a good check. Chara isnt a goon and doesnt deserve a long suspension. My opinion only, but i see him geting maybe a game at most 2 for this.

Players are supposed to know where they are on the ice and has made a vicious hit in a very dangerous place...He almost killed Paciorrety.

Re: According to Habs, Pacioretty suffered a severe concussion and fractured 4th cerv

Wow, that is just devastating. Here's to Pacioretty having a full recovery, but having a fractured vertebra in his neck puts his career in jeopardy. However, I understand where DDF is coming from - if Chara hits him on the other side of the ice near the penalty boxes, there's no severe injury. So while he definitely deliberately pushed him into the stanchion, I don't think he meant to hurt him that badly. He'll probably get a couple games, but if he gets nothing...well, could you really argue against it?

EDIT: This picture was posted on another board, and pretty much says it all...

Judging this picture, it now looks intentional to me, though I still don't think he meant to break his neck.

Ehh Chara is dirty, but he won't get anything more than the penalty he received in the game. Yes it was a way late hit, but it was just unfortunate he got hit right in that spot. In no way was Chara aiming to nail him there or hurt him so I believe nothing more will come out of this.

I have to disagree with you here, Scott - sorry. Chara, imho, IS a goon and uses his size to his full advantage to take cheap shots, especially with his elbows and big shoulders, at other players. I've seen it since he came into the league and have commented on it to XT and on this board many times. He makes Matt Cooke look like a saint and he gets away with murder because he can conceal his cheap shots with his big body. I hope he gets a 10 dayer out of this - he deserves it, the SOB.

I Pacioretty will be OK and I send him my very best wishes for a full recovery.

If Cookie had made that goon like hit, he would have been suspended for the rest of the season. NHL.

Yeah, right. If you were that upset by injuring Pacioretty, you would have called him by now, ya big dirty lummox.

“It’s been hard,” said Chara. “Obviously I feel bad about what happened. I was trying to make a strong hockey play and play hard. It was just very, very unfortunate that the player got hurt and had to leave the game. It is on my mind.”

He was asked whether he has contacted Pacioretty, or will try to.

“I didn’t have a chance yet, but I’m planning on it,” he said.

Pacioretty was almost dead yesterday but Chara is not suspended. Knowing the NHL I'm not surprised by the decision of the league as they prove their incompetent for 10 years and Pacioretty was almost dead yesterday but Chara is not suspended. It's frustrating and it may be very ugly to March 24 in Boston.

    Found it:

There's no doubt if Cooke would have done that it would have been deemed a dirty hit by the NHL with a suspension.

That dirty rotten SOB. Damned straight if Cookie would have done that, he'd be tossed for the rest of the season. I have a short shit list of NFL and NHL players and Chara is definitely a member of the NHL list. I can't stomach him.

I posted a better-quality picture above...that to me is the smoking gun. However, I still don't think Chara intended to hurt him as badly as he did, and I dislike him as much as HTG does. Still, to not get some kind of suspension clearly shows the league's double-standard once again. You can get away with hits like this so long as you're a star player. If you're a plugger or a fighter, well, you're fucked.

Montreal police started a criminal investigation Thursday into the on-ice hit by Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara that left the Canadiens' Max Pacioretty with a severe concussion and cracked verterbra.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on Thursday joined in. Speaking after a U.S. congressional panel discussion in Washington about encouraging American kids to play hockey, Bettman said Pacioretty's injury is horrific, but it's part of the game.
What a freakin' HYPOCRITE and liar!!! So much for his diatribes on player safety.

Bettman and Goodumbell should both go and take up residence under a bridge where trolls belong.

Not as avid of a hockey fan as everyone else here but from my perspective that looked completely intentional. Don't know that his will was to damn near kill the guy but he did intend to do some serious damage. I also don't buy that this guy has any trouble sleeping at night.

Can they really do this? i mean if they found him guilty of something what can they do? ban him from Canada? It was a ugly shot REAL ugly, and for it to happen to someone younger than me gives me a sick feeling in my gut. I diddnt like it and if it ever happened to Sid i would drive down to the game walk on the ice a cut his fucking head off, but its part of the game. That part of the game should be removed but with out rule change like the rules they have in all other Hockey leagues (all hits to the head are illegal) it won’t stop and people will get hurt, end their careers and even die.

I've always said Bettman and Der Kommissar were separated at birth. The only man more incompetent at his job as commish is Bud Selig, but those two clowns are breathing down his neck (no pun intended). If they suspended Chara for even a game, none of this happens with Montreal fans demanding a criminal investigation, which I think it's ridiculous in itself. Let the players settle it on the ice...oh wait, that's not allowed because Bettman (and his predecessor) just had to have the instigator rule put in. If this was 1978, Chara would have followed Pacioretty out of the building on a stretcher.

NHL stars Henrik Sedin, Joe Thornton rip into Zdeno Chara decision, Bruins
Canucks captain questions league’s logic, while ex-Boston captain wonders about his former team’s ‘horse shoe’

SAN JOSE — Vancouver Canucks captain Henrik Sedin doesn't understand why the National Hockey League exonerated Boston Bruin Zdeno Chara, but San Jose Shark Joe Thornton has an idea.

“It's just something with Boston; it seems like they have a horse shoe,” Thornton said before Thursday's game between the Canucks and Sharks.

“There's just something about Boston and the disciplinary [decisions] are on their side. I'm not sure why that is or anything. I'm not assuming that Colin's kid being on the team, that's why.”

NHL senior vice-president Colin Campbell's son, Greg, plays for the Bruins.

Sounds like Bettman is trying to get the NHL to be more like the NFL.

Chara won't be lead off the ice in cuffs. Although, wouldn't that be a scene worthy of Slap Shot? I can just see it now Montreal police officers slipping over the ice trying to get the cuffs on Chara.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nhl...ory?id=6330773

Look, it was a dirty hit for which Chara should have been suspended, but the whole police investigation thing is ridiculous. There were never going to be charges filed. The police are just keeping the investigation open to satisfy the Montreal fans' delusional fantasies.

All players in any sport do and very well should use their size to their advantage. However this in no way opens the door to foul play or dirty measures. Chara should be suspended for a long time, playoffs or no playoffs, hits like these should be admonished!

Anybody remember when McSorley hit Brashear across the head with his stick? He was suspended and was also brought up on criminal charges.

"On February 21, 2000, McSorley, playing for the Boston Bruins, swung his stick and hit Donald Brashear in the head with 3 seconds left in the game. Brashear fell backward and hit his head hard on the ice as a result of the stick's contact with his head and helmet. As a result of the fall and hard contact with the ice, Brashear lost consciousness and suffered a grade 3 concussion.

As a result of the stick incident, McSorley was charged with assault and suspended by the NHL for the remainder of the 1999–2000 season (including playoffs) missing 23 games. On October 4, 2000, a jury found McSorley guilty of assault with a weapon for his attack on Brashear. He was sentenced to 18 months probation. The trial was the first for an on-ice attack by an NHL player since 1988.

After his assault conviction his NHL suspension was extended to one full year (through February 21, 2001).[1] This suspension was the longest in NHL history, and McSorley would never play in another NHL game."
