BLAH!!!Forever loving and missing you Gal.
Can't guarantee that it will pay off because of the age but it had to be done. If you don't sign Watt everything you have done this year is meaningless. And really, even if TJ's starts to fall off because of age, since they are not going to be paying a QB for the next 3 years or so it doesn't actually hinder their future salary cap much. Cam's contract will be gone in a year or two. Highsmith will be gone after his contract runs out. We will need money for JP jr maybe after this season but overall we are in a good cap situation.

79-44-2 and a .642 win% with TJ Watt.
1-11 and a .083 win% without him.
This pretty much explains how important he has been to this team. There aren't many quarterbacks that have had that much influence on a team's wins and losses in their absence.
Cap dollars, production, and age be darned.
Several years ago I was against resigning Csm Heyward for those types of reasons. I see know that was wrong and you simply just have to sign some guys until they don't want to play any longer.
Watt is one of those guys.
I also think the national media coverage of all of the negotiations is/was totally hilarious. Some CBS insider and a few other places basically admitted they made up a controversy/difficult negotiations narrative because there was so little actual NFL news/content to report.
I found it hard to believe this had any other outcome. Watt was gonna get handed the biggest contract out there at some point. Glad they did it before the Parsons and Hendricks signings. Always cheaper to be early.
I get the keep him a steeler for life sentiments blah blah blah but lets be honest here ...
thats a shit ton of money for a man on the wrong side of 30 who had his best year as a pro 3 seasons ago (22.5 sacks) then missed most of a year (5 sacks) then just 15 sacks last year and vanished down the stretch ...
his best football is behind him and we are not paying him for 3 years ago's performance ... smart money never pays for past performance ....
this is a bad deal for the franchise IMO based on production vs dollar spent but it will take 3 years to bare evidence of such
Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles didn't value him either , now he is a Stain at the Mistake by the Lake 3 teams in 4 years more of a shooting star than a superstar
In 2026, Watt's contract is only 14 or 15% of the team's total salary cap.
That seems not unbearable?

Bosa, Watt, Garrett, Crosby, Jones, all kinda hanging out in the same 12-15% tier.
He is probably a better player than his brother too.
All Defense!
$$$$$ post.
Not sue how this makes us better as a team. If we invested that money on the offensive side of the ball I think we would see better results.
Also, the 1-11 stat without him is like the Tomlin non-losing streak. Just means we haven’t addressed the real problem with the way this team is constructed which is why we haven’t won a playoff game in almost a decade.
Browns give a fully guaranteed contract to their 2nd round pick, and another rookie gets arrested before TC.
Bengals can't agree on terms with their 1st round rookie or their veteran defensive leader.
Ravens HoF kicker is out of the league for, ironically, performance issues AND sexual harassment.
Steelers fans are afraid they may have given TJ Watt too much money.
