Steelers reportedly interested in Darnold
Pittsburgh is expected to make an offer to soon-to-be free agent QB Sam Darnold, according to The Athletic. At this point, though, the Steelers are still in play to re-sign Justin Fields, their top choice. But if Fields does sign elsewhere, the Steelers are now considering their other options that includes Darnold.
At this point, I would say the Steelers' QB pecking order is Fields, Russell Wilson, Darnold/Aaron Rodgers.
I would be shocked if they don't have a contract in place for a QB right now, possibly Darnold.
I didn’t see this coming. Pity to give away draft capital for a WR but in a way I guess we don’t have to use a top pick for a WR this year and can focus somewhere else.
6’4” and 235 lbs. That probably makes him the biggest WR in the AFC North.
Holy jumping cats.
It's going to be Darnold or Wilson (even Rodgers) at this point. Some team (think Jets or even Seahawks) are going to overpay for Fields.
Where do we find the .money to pay Watt 140 million now

Merry Christmas
I think they will still find a way to sign TJ. The question this brings up is Pickens future. I know the cap is going way up but I can't see us paying 60 million a year for two starting WR's. Also probably puts an end to the bringing back Najee talk.
I like it though. Now we build up the DL, secondary, and get ourselves a rookie running back in the draft.
I think Pickens is gone. Either this yr for a draft pick or next near as FA and we get compensatory draft pick.
unless DeKaylin gets injured and Pickens has a monster year I can’t see the Steelers keeping him long run. If anything Metcalf is less of a head case than Pickens. Imagine that.
I don't think they will trade Pickens this year. Pickens and Metcalf make a pretty good starting wr tandem. Even if we end up with Russ again or Fields struggles the offense should still be better.
I have to admit, even though we don't have anybody to throw the ball yet, this is the first tingling I have felt since midseason.

That's a lot of money for a WR, but they now have two studs on the outside, with a very good tight end and speed in the slot. There is potential for a much more explosive offense if the OL improves and they take the limiters off of whoever the quarterback ends up being.
I didn't expect the team to give up a high draft pick AND pay $30 mil a year to a WR.
It sure looks like they are in win-now mode.
Now get a quality QB please.
They are certainly willing to use resources to try and improve. The criticism otherwise never held up.
But how do they fill in the blank with anything but a laugher?
“————— and the Steeler head to Buffalo to battle Josh Allen and the Bills for the chance to collide with Mahomes and the Chiefs at Arrowhead with the Super Bowl on the line!”
Can have all the weapons on offense they want. Without a credible trigger not sure it matters.
Does this make you think it is more likley Russ?
Just trying to follow the logic here. Nice signing btw, just got my wish a season later. But... this signing makes me believe we have a verbal agreement with either Fields or Russ for 2025. I don't think we would invest 5yrs/$150M on a WR without something solid at the QB position.
A lot of fans have been hammering on for Khan to get a legit #2WR. And now he's done that. Whether you are a believer in Pickens or not, we now have 2 legit NFL WRs. CA3 and Roman Wilson are icing on the cake from here.
I love not having desperate needs.
Can't believe the posters who think Pickens is gone cause of this, Steelers been searching before last year for a 2 WR. If anything it points to signing Russ very soon.
They needed a receiver anyway. Now they dont have to get one in the draft. But they need someone to get Metcalf and GP the ball. I dont think its going to be fields, they probably do go after Darnold. Maybe Russ is their fallback.
just proves the Steelers are not rebuilding, they're trying to reload. With TJ, Cam, and coach Tomlin nearing the end i kind of figured this was what they were going to do
I don't see them letting Pickens walk, otherwise they would be right back to where they were last year.
Many believe that the best way to build a great NFL team is to pay offense and draft defense. It is generally easier to draft and develop defensive talent that is more athletic and less money, while also being far less money against the cap.
You then have to be able to trade veteran defensive players or release the players with giant contracts and be able to draft really good talent or sign reasonably priced free agents.
Let's see which QB they sign. We will see if they make any other big moves before the draft to get more players or draft capital or if they ride with the roster as constructed and add a few pieces to make the run.
It will be interesting to see if they restructure a bunch of contracts to create more cap room or if they try not to push too much money down the road.
And so it begins......
I should say that I am a big fan of this trade. First, Smith's offense demands big physical WRs. Well, look at the big sum gun. You ain't getting much bigger or much more physical. Second, Metcalf and Pickens (even if just for 2025) is an absolutely ludicrous duo. While Metcalf is not the contested catch artist that Pickens is, he is still kinda just throw the ball his way and don't mind the DB type. Usually because he just runs past the dude.
Second round pick and whatever NBA/NHL pick swap nonsense is a good deal for a 27 year old WR that boasts a physical game unlike many at the position. The contract is even reasonable upon further thinking (this is where MojoUW usually gets into trouble). Higgins and Chase are going to reset the market for WRs. Metcalf's deal slots in between Aiyuk and Lamb at the top 5 current WR contracts. Looking ahead past those two and Drake London, Scary Terry, Deebo, Courtland Sutton, and Garrett Wilson are all coming due for extensions or new FA contracts next season. That will push the current Metcalf contract down the contract $$$ rankings.
ONLY negative is how do you juggle the cap space around to slot in Pickens and Watt? However, no way that Khan did this thinking he would have to move someone off the roster he wanted to keep otherwise. Figure that is what he gets paid to make work.
A final positive is that whoever the Steelers get to play QB....tell him he is going to be throwing to two monstars on the outside? That might grease the skids a bit.
I'm gonna take any excuse to post Wire inspired cartoons!

Agree, Metcalf and Pickens is a good 1-2 at REC.
As for QB, you can look at it either way. They either already have somebody close to being in place, or now that they have a solid group of targets, it could be attractive to a Free Agent QB. But I still look at the vanilla offensive scheme and am not sure that is really enticing to QB's.
You sign Rodgers or Wilson for ONE year and if they shit the bed then you draft Sam Leavitt from Arizona State next year. Hines Ward already gave Leavitt his blessing:

McFadden said they should go out now and draft RB Aston Jeanty at #21 if he's there to replace Najee. Now that DK is here that might not be a bad idea. Imagine having two explosive WR's and a RB that can do more then just put his head down and run into the line like Najee did.
Problem is I don't think Jeanty will last past the top 15. In that case a few mock drafts I've seen (after the DK trade) have us instead picking RB Omarion Hampton instead at #21.
