If it’s Russ then I will find ways to feel optimistic (ie his familiarity with DK) but I would prefer something different as we tried it last year with Russ and didn’t have the success we wanted. Darnold doesn’t get me excited but I guess it’s something different so that is where my optimism lies for now.
That is where I am at. It isn't that I just so truly believe in Fields...it is that I absolutely believe the rest of those names are finished as viable NFL QBs. Saying that, Rodgers will likely sign somewhere, stop sulking, actually try, and win an MVP.
But...the Steelers are seeking explosive plays. Look at that list. Only one guy has explosive traits. Fields. His legs are electric. And his arm is unbelievable. The only issue is can his brain control it?
Wow. There is a ton of stuff on profootballtalk from Mike Florio linking Rodgers to the Steelers. He seems to think that Fields to the Jets is almost a done deal
I get the money part of this. But as a player, why would Fields choose to go to a cursed organization with possibly the worst owner in the league and start all over again. A second season in an offense he's already had success in would be very enticing I would think. Even if it was for less money. Success brings money.
Rodgers is an awful teammate and leader. Always has been. BUT...he used to be able to cash the checks his attitude and mouth wrote on the field. I honestly do not think he can any longer. He's just not worth it.
The only way I would see it being a "good idea" is that Rodgers ego is so humbled that he commits to working out, participating in practice, running the actual offense and not whatever strikes his fancy, working diligently with this teammates, and mentoring a young QB. These are all things he has never done and has flat out refused to do in all previous stops. I do not expect him to start now on his last hurrah.
Saw similar with Wilson. And just like Wilson, I do not think that Rodgers has the juice to make it worth the squeeze.
Because he was told certain things when brought over to the team last season. He had a 4-2 record as a starter and a good TD/Turnover margin, and was benched for Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson then imploded on a 5-game disaster and Just Fields never saw the field as a starter again.
Word is he isn't sure that he can trust that the Steelers will play him and give him a real opportunity to be a long-term starter. He most likely doesn't feel that he was treated fairly or appropriately based on what he was told when he got there.
Sounds a little familiar...doesn't it?
The handling of the quarterback situation has been butchered by the Steelers, and the quarterbacks have been saying that they haven't been given the chances they have been promised when they arrived, or that they don't trust that the team and coach will honor the opportunities promised.
I don't like the idea of signing a 42-year-old QB.
With that out of the way and strictly speaking in terms of evaluating current play by these guys, Aaron Rodgers clearly played better late in the year. He appeared to be adjusting to his injury and continued to recover from his injury and improve.
I think Aaron Rodgers is clearly a better QB right now than Russell Wilson. He still goes through progressions and can effectively run an offensive system. I think Rodgers is most likely going to play better this season than last season.
I hate his age. I don't like the man a whole lot. But the guy is most likely the best quarterback right now if allowed to run a full NFL offense with the power and control to make changes at the LOS to get the team into good plays. I also know that he distributes the ball based on coverage better than the other available free agent quarterbacks. I think Rodgers will take full advantage of the tight ends as defenses will most likely play predominantly shell coverages like Cover 2 to try to take away the deep ball and stay out of single coverage against both outside wide receivers.
If defenses do play those coverages, that will help the run game and create lots of opportunities for tight ends to find holes in coverage and particularly zone coverage. Freiermuth could have a field day with a guy like Rodgers if he could stay healthy. That will put defenses in a very tough position if the OL can improve the run blocking and they use a more explosive RB. That in turn will probably create more opportunities for single coverage outside which will lead to big plays to the dynamic wide receivers.
I can see how it would work if he can stay healthy. He also wouldn't have to be a team leader with the Steelers that everyone looks to. He just needs to play quarterback and keep the WR's productive and score points within the offense. He can still do that.
I can't believe I just made a case for Rodgers......
Until something actually happens it is all soap
Opera for dudes nonsense.
Remember, all this “insider” and internet “reporting” is not someone doing diligent investigative reporting. It is ALL someone feeding them a nugget to get intentionally leaked to advance the source’s agenda.
For instance, all this Rodgers and Darnold stuff is likely being leaked by their agents to create a sense of urgency for any interested teams. The Steelers are likely leaking to get Field’s attention.
Nothing is real until there’s a contract.
I can feel for Justin if he feels that he can’t trust the Steelers to give him the chance but he is the one that decided to join a team that just signed Russell Wilson. He is also the player who was QB with a stagnant passing game and saw that passing game significantly improve when he was benched for Wilson.
I don’t trust the Steelers to give him a chance because in some ways he had his chance and he was “meh”. So the doubts on both sides - Justin and the Steelers are both justified.

That makes sense.![]()
Darnold goes to Seattle.
that leaves Fields Wilson or Rodgers for us.
Fields is reportedly signing a 2yr $40M with the Jets.

I hope we offered at least that. $30M guaranteed? We could handle that too.

I'm starting to lean Dart in this draft.
Dart, Will Howard, even Rourke. But a ticket.
Maybe Mr Rodgers comes to town now, Russ would still be the fallback
[QUOTE=Born2Steel;878760]
Did you really not understand that I was explaining that Fields probably wouldn't be signing with the Steelers and why?
Now it has been announced that Fields would rather go to the Jets at a bargain price than play quarterback for the Steelers again because he believes he will get a real chance there.
This isn't that hard to understand. The Steelers don't have quarterbacks lining up to play for them based on a recent history of bad offense and questionable QB decisions and support. Also, the way that quarterbacks that have played there recently have reacted towards the team based on how they were handled during their time with the Steelers is certainly making quarterbacks question if that is a team they want to play for.
[QUOTE=pczach;878772] What is confusing about your post is you saying, 'he was told certain things'/then benched for Russ. Russ was brought in to be the QB. The room was to be Russ and KP, not Russ and Fields. Fields was brought in to be the backup and nothing more. He only started because Russ got hurt. Once Russ was ready, he retook his spot. There was no Fields was brought in to be the starter over Russ scenario. So what certain things was he told exactly? That makes no sense to me.
What makes sense is the Steelers were willing to give Fields a chance this season, but not at $30M guaranteed. He went to the Jets for the payday. That's it.
My point is that has Fields played well and, just for talk, say won a playoff game or 2. Then he gets his payday because he showed he can be the right fit. Now he doesn't have to work for it. The Jets just handed it to him.
[QUOTE=Born2Steel;878773]
No, what makes sense is that Justin Fields is the one that dealt with the Steelers and Mike Tomlin yet chose to go to the Jets because he believes he'll have a better shot there.
You want everyone to think it was only about money when you don't even know what Fields was offered. How does that make any sense?
You don't seem to want to understand that Justin Fields knows everything he was told and promised by Mike Tomlin and the Steelers to have a chance to compete for the starting job, yet he chose to go to a losing franchise for his shot at a bargain basement price.
The Steelers let the world know they wanted Fields, yet it was the Steelers waiting for Fields to tell them to pound sand with their contract offer and their discussed assurances going forward. Now the Steelers are scrambling to settle for another quarterback that wasn't their first choice. That isn't deniable.
I am not lamenting at all that Fields signed with the Jets. Good luck to him.
whether it’s Fields, Darnold, Rodgers or Wilson - I don’t get too excited but among them I would prefer someone who can pass more than run and to me that places Fields last among that group.
god. At the start of this thread I didn’t want Rodgers but between Wilson and Rodgers I guess I would want Rodgers because it’s something different
[QUOTE=Born2Steel;878773]
Mike Tomlin's own words.
https://sports.yahoo.com/mike-tomlin...vbzaTxq3rj4GQk
"Rest assured, when it’s time to compete, Justin will be given an opportunity to compete, and we’ll allow those guys to sort themselves out," Tomlin said, per Steelers Now's Nick Farabaugh. "But I thought it was appropriate to describe it in a way for when we get started.
[QUOTE=pczach;878778]Are you saying he did not get that chance to compete? He started 6 games. I don't think the Steelers wanted to guarantee JF $30M to play QB. I didn't see anything worthy of $30M guaranteed. Did you? So yes, I 100%believe Fields took the payday. Because that is what makes sense.
[QUOTE=Born2Steel;878783]it does make sense in the moment , but if you truly believe in yourself the better option would have been stay with the team that you have proven to be able to win with not go to a team that just got rid of 1/2 their starting WR corps and was 5-12 last year with a 1st ballot HoF QB who tossed 28 TDS and 11 ints and about 3900 yards ...
Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles didn't value him either , now he is a Stain at the Mistake by the Lake 3 teams in 4 years more of a shooting star than a superstar
[QUOTE=Born2Steel;878783]
How much did the Steelers offer? I know you have no idea.
You tried to make your whole argument based on a lie. You're the one that said Fields was brought in to be nothing but a backup. That was completely wrong and Mike Tomlin's own words show how wrong you were.
Fields was benched for Russell Wilson after posting a 4-2 record as a starter because Tomlin stated they needed more at the quarterback position. Wilson plays pretty well the first few games, then implodes and plays worse than Fields did when he was starting with a far worse won/loss record.
If Justin Fields never got into another game as a starter when Wilson had a 5-game stretch worse than Kenny Pickett ever had.....yeah......I'd say he didn't get a real chance.
