I agree with you on the overpriced veteran QBs.
That 20 to 25 million is Geno Smith money. Now smith is more accomplished but not sure he was when he signed that contract. In the Division, Burrow - 55M, Lamar - 52M, Watson - 46M.

Maybe Justin would prove to be not worth 10 million. Maybe we will find out. My point is 20 to 25 million for a player with first round talent, who has won games in the NFL is not overpaying as a chance.

Here is a stat I just saw. There have been 89 quarterbacks drafted since Mohomes was drafted in 2017. Hurts is the first one to win a Superbowl.

Interesting how so many people on this site don't think that a QB who struggles at the start of his career can EVER get any better.

Good thing you guys weren't around for the Bradshaw years. You would have run him out of town by the end of '71.

He is the only QB on the original posters list I would consider, even at 37. He looked great in the NFCCG and probably would have won that game had it not been a snow storm. All that said the ONLY way I make a move for him via trade is for the right price in draft capital, the Rams have to help with his ridiculous CAP numbers or Stafford would have to agree to a new deal.

Nothing higher then a 2nd round pick otherwise no thanks. At 37, I even think that is high asking price.

Now to the money ... Stafford comes with a CAP hit of $49 million next season and $53 million in 2026 ($22 in dead space if cut before June 1 of that year). That's a lot of CAP space for a 1-2 year band-aid. The only way a team should make a move like that is if they have all the pieces in place and need only a QB to push them over the top. Is that this Steelers team?

And again this all begs the question, why would Stafford walk away from that money and contract? Yes he only has $4 million guaranteed money, but if he can perform like he did last year why would the Rams cut him? If Stafford can play for two more years at the level he did last season he has $102 million dollars waiting for him from the Rams.

I dont want to draft one THIS year at least not early and I have to play someone so why not Fields who knows the system ...again if he fails then that likely means he set me up for a better selection in 2026 with a class loaded with what appears to be quality QBs perhaps 6 first round guys in the top 15 or so selections and if Fields sucks we potentially could have one of those picks without trading up to get one ......

but if he doesn't suck ................ he is under contract on a bargain basement deal for another year giving you time to negotiate a new deal and stock this team with young talent ...

if we do not sign Fields prior to the opening of Free agency we likely do not get him because someone will look at that 4-2 record to start last year and say ya know what lets take a shot on this kid and offer him more than we will be willing to pay ...

get him now while the getting is good , and we may as well get used to it but Mike Tomlin isnt going anywhere at least until his current contract is up and its just starting (the 3 additional years he agreed to before last season and he was under contract already for last year sooo no sooner than 2028 for that change unless he retires)
I am not completely opposed to this as long as any money after the first year is not guaranteed.

that is where I am .... if anything is guaranteed beyond year 1 it must be small very small 2 million roster bonus or something to that effect to keep dead money to a bare minimum

If it gets out that he is on the trading block the price will go through the roof and the Browns will offer him a fully guaranteed 500 million dollar contract exstention.

I'm sure they called and asked. I think I read an interview last year or the year before with Khan where he discussed how every GM is on the phone with every other GM about every player in the league almost constantly. Obviously, that isn't possible, but I think it got his point across.

These headlines make me laugh. What is "shocking" about it? Steelers need a QB. Jacksonville has a new coach and is still searching for a GM. No surprise that a team would inquire about their biggest salary cap hurdle from the previous regime.

"Shocking" would be the Jags agreeing to complete the trade.

Again, like Stafford, why would the Jags trade him? Who would they replace him with? Unless they are going full rebuild it makes no sense and is just another BS rumor.

Because Lawrence has been a disappointment since he was drafted as a "can't miss" quarterback with the #1 pick.

His won/loss record as a starter is terrible. 22-38-0

He has been a turnover machine, and many fans have been screaming for the team to move on from him. 69 TD 46 INT 36 fumbles over four seasons.

He has physical talent, but hasn't shown any consistent growth or improvement. Has lacked any consistency in his play.

Quarterbacks with his pedigree are supposed to lift the franchises they play for. Clearly the Jags failed him with rookie head coach Urban Meyer. But even after getting "QB whisperer" Doug Peterson as his head coach, he hasn't progressed as expected.

He's still young and he still has talent. Can someone get him in the proper system and have the light turn on for him with great coaching? It's still unclear but possible.

He just signed a 5-year $275,000,000 contract, but the big cap hits don't really get big until 2028 at $47 million. It gets crazy after that with his cap hit at $78.5 mil in 2029 and $74.8 in 2030.

    as a side note ...

Fields numbers are on par with Lawrence when you consider all aspects of his game and wont cost as much money or any draft capital ....

I would go Fields if it was my choice ..

I'm excited to see if Justin Fields can make this offense work, and what Tom Arth can get out of him. I think if we get some weapons for him in the draft, Who knows?

It's going to be Fields but I can see someone in the front office trying to sway the room for Darnold, assuming the Vikings let him hit free agency.

No on Lawrence. We dont want to give away multiple picks for a guy the jaguars want to get rid of. We need to bolster the D Line, WR room, and D backfield (We dont know the status of Minkah going forward). Just stick with fields for a reasonable price and look to the 26 draft. And this time pair the draftee Qb with a competent OC and give him at least two full seasons to develop.

Not saying you analysis is faulty. You make a good point. A 78 million dollar cap hit is nothing to laugh off (especially if he is not playing well). However, by 2029 that cap hit might not be in the top 10 or 15.

I'm not making an argument against the contract. As I said, he won't make the insane money for 5 years from now. If they acquired him and he worked out, they would likely restructure his contract and be able to create a more favorable cap number.

My concern is that he isn't near the player he was made out to be coming out of college. At the time he was drafted, I stated that I thought he was rated too high and that he had turnover issues. I actually told everyone not to be surprised if Lawrence wasn't a great player. I even said that Fields had a chance to be the best QB out of this draft if he ever figures it all out.

Right now, Fields and Lawrence are both flawed quarterbacks with upside. It's just that Lawrence will likely cost the Steelers multiple draft picks and they will get handed a $275,000,000 contract. The other will likely cost them less than $20,000,000 per season for a few years.

IMO they are very close from a talent standpoint, and I think Lawrence is overrated based on reputation rather than performance.

It's not an easy decision. It's always about who the team believes in more. I would personally rather give Fields a chance. Arthur Smith seems to really like him as he operates within the offense, yet his elite athleticism and arm strength make it possible for him to play beyond the X's and O's....plus he showed real growth in only 6 starts.

The initial talk about Stafford being traded has died down so most likely he will stay as a Ram. However, I could see someone there come to a conclusion that they have exhausted and tried everything they could with Stafford after his SB win and now it’s time to try someone different. In other words - not do what we did with Ben in his last 3-4 years here at Pit where we had no chance to win a SB but held on to the best option that we had.

I don’t think Stafford can be had without a 1st and it’s a long shot that we would ever give that up

The path for Stafford to Pittsburgh might hinge on the Rams evaluation of Darnold. If they think he can thrive in their system - they could decide to get younger at the position while picking up something in a trade (I think Stafford is under contract).

But those late season collapses against pressure are gonna be the sticking point.

A QB that can play from under Center. Can use play action. Is accurate on short and intermediate routes. Has the ability to throw deep accurately a few times a game. That's all I'm asking for. Whatever name is attached to that QB is the name I'm hoping for.

Oh, so we should trade for him then. LOL, again the Steelers are bad at player analysis sometimes but I hope they never get this bad. And as you pointed out his CAP numbers are a franchise killing albatross. HARD PASS.
