There will be some cap cuts and restructures. Larry O will likely get cut next year. CP isn't needed.

    Omar will do his thing

In all seriousness though, I don't expect a Wilson contract unless it's something very team friendly. Signing him to some major franchise contract at this point in his career feels a lot like how things ended with Ben. If both of these unicorn situations had not come up with Wilson and Fields where would we be currently at QB? I'm hoping we learned from that and offer Wilson but not break the bank, bring back Fields on a 2-year deal that let's us keep him developing here. If we must roll with Fields next season then so be it. I'm not afraid of that.

I don’t see a market for a 37 year old QB who wants 40 million besides a couple of desperate organizations. Will Wilson play for Jets, Raiders or Giants for money at this point in career? No chance of winning. My guess is no. We shall see. Plenty of options with Fields or draft a guy. I like Allar but if he plays well in playoffs he could go in round 1. I bet Wilson signs 2-3 years with Steelers . I suck at gambling though.

All these guys say they are all about winning and nothing else. Then they almost always sign with the team that offers the biggest contract.

Cousins is a good example. Were the Falcons his best shot at winning a SB? Or did they offer a big old bag of guaranteed cash?

I agree , you hear it all the time “I want to go somewhere I can win”. Brady and Manning come to mind as guys who actually won , but not sure they took less money. It’s incomprehensible to think money would be main factor for a guy worth 200 million. Staying with team who took chance on you with a coach and system thriving with will hopefully sway decision. The hit to his reputation last couple of years should be negated if he remains in Pittsburgh and continues to play well and not turn ball over. We’ll find out if cash is more important.

People seem to be forgetting that Russell Wilson has a lot on the line personally.

Adding another Super Bowl to his resume and a couple high quality seasons cements him in the HOF. There are people that believe Russ was a product of the Seattle roster more so than his personal talents.

Russ' legacy is very much going to be largely affected by what he does this season and the maybe the next couple seasons. He has made a ton of money. I would think that showing everyone that he can play in a completely different setting for another team and lead that team with high-level play and success would be extremely important to him.

We will see how the rest of the season goes and then watch how this plays out with the contract talks with the team.

I highly doubt we keep both. Fields will look for a starting gig if Wilson stays. And i think Wilson is likely to stay given the reasons discussed above.

I don't know. I look back at myself when I was 32-34 years old. At that age, my body was telling me that I was no longer young. I had very little money at the time, but there's no way I would have played a sport where my body would take a pounding like an NFL player, not even for 200 million dollars. At that age, the cost/benefit starts to change, and it take a lot more money to make it worth the effort, regardless of how good a team is. The only caveat to that, I would think, are players who still feel like they're in great shape and have the ability to reunite with former coaches or other players.

That’s why I really wasn’t excited about Ben coming back after that shoulder injury.

NFL Rumors: Sam Darnold's next deal

Sam Darnold is set to get paid in free agency

    By Chris Landers | Dec 15, 2024

NFL Rumors: Robust market waiting for Sam Darnold in free agency

As Sam Darnold continues to revitalize his career with the Minnesota Vikings, one big question looms: Will the team try to re-sign him in free agency, or hand the keys to top-10 pick JJ McCarthy in 2025? If Minnesota opts for the former, it could prove costly: According to Zak Keefer of The Athletic, Darnold is set to have QB-needy teams banging down his door next spring, especially given the iffy state of this draft's quarterback class.

"But Darnold won’t come cheap. It wouldn’t surprise me if QB-needy teams — in a draft year light on star power at the position — are offering deals north of $35 million per season for Darnold. Or more. In their minds, he’s a much better bet than taking a rookie in this year’s class."

There are still plenty of question marks around Darnold, who still has the propensity for making back-breaking mistakes and has been propped up by Kevin O'Connell's QB-friendly offense (and the presence of all-world receiver Justin Jefferson on the outside). But Darnold was the No. 2 overall pick once upon a time for a reason, and he's still just 27. It's not outlandish to think that a team with cap space would rather spend $35-40 million of it on Darnold rather than rolling the dice on someone like Cam Ward and risk setting their organization back years.

He was the 3rd overall. I simply can't trust anyone who is too lazy to fact check his own statements.

    That is a good point.

Aside from that, the entire article that I can read in the posted preview here....makes a glaringly obvious claim.

Landers has staked out the earth shattering opinion that Sam Darnold will get a contract offer for the table stakes of an expected starting QB. Basically he has moved from "bridge QB" to "starting QB" and therefore his market is a known set of numbers.

We all have already reached the same conclusions in our own discussions here. Maybe we can all quit our jobs and be a "sports editor" for some internet content mill?

Is Darnold an NFL starting QB or a starting QB in Kevin O'Connell's Vikings offense?

That is the big question. I think it is the latter. But I am sure some team like the Raiders or Giants is going to try and make it the former.

I tend to agree with you. He could be successful in a handful of offenses but doubt he’ll land a job there. Eagles, Niners come to mind. Raiders, giants, Carolina doubtful. He’d make the Browns better IMO.

Likely to go to a team hiring a new coach from the McVey/Shanahan tree.

And I think the opposite. QB's don't win super bowls running the football. QB's win super bowls by passing. Wilson is the better passer, stick with Wilson.
