One of their various 7th round picks for veteran OLB depth. Smith is not the force he once was....but this is a solid professional depth edge player for next to nothing.

Haha, the notice I got stated “Huge move” with a “big time pass rusher” lol
I wonder how he is against the run.

Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles didn't value him either , now he is a Stain at the Mistake by the Lake 3 teams in 4 years more of a shooting star than a superstar
for a 7th round pick....
As of yesterday, the Steelers still had one open roster spot after adding Sutton to the 53. Okay...looking while I was posting. It is Rodney Williams. Several PS spots also cleared out....Assume Williams clears waivers and goes to the PS.

Steelers acquire DE Preston Smith from Packers for 7th-round pick
The Steelers traded for Mike Williams, but they weren’t done. They wanted to bolster their defense, so they did so by acquiring Preston Smith for a seventh-round pick.
Getting Smith a couple of years ago would have been much better because Smith is no longer the dominant pass rusher he once was. He’s seen his snap count decrease in recent weeks, and he’s recorded just three sacks this year. Still, he’ll be able to help with the pass-rushing depth, which took a hit because of some injuries. I like this move for Pittsburgh.
As mentioned, Smith was playing less and less for the Packers, so I understand the trade. Still, if I were the Packers, I’d rather have the edge-rushing depth than a mere seventh-round pick.
Grade for Steelers – B+
Grade for Packers – C+

It occurs to me that the best version of Smith is basically what the Steelers hoped Demarvin Leal would be.
Have to see if Smith can still figure out a way to get it done at 32.

Suspect that Smith plays heavier than his listed weight. So I wonder if he sees time in that pass rush package where they slide a OLB down to DT/DE and keep 3 OLB on the field.
Herbig was in that role earlier in the year and it didn't go well because of his size.
For transparency, Kozora had thus thought in a write up and I stole it. I'd actually wondered if Smith might play DE but a package role makes more sense.

Good depth pick up. He was a 4-3 DE coming out of Miss. State and has good pass rush ability. Probably fits in as a OLB with the Steelers or maybe some obvious pass situations can put him inside and rush Watt, Highsmith, Smith and a true lineman like Cam, Benton, etc.
Better than seeing Watt and Highsmith gassed and on the sidelines at the same time and having to watch Moon get no pressure on the QB.
Smith hasn't really been a hand in the dirt DE in years. I imagine he's backing up at OLB for us.
Agreed, I think when he played in Washington they ran an even front and he was at DE.
The Steelers last game when Watt and Highsmith were getting winded down the stretch and both off the field at the same time, there was little pass rush pressure and they likely decided they needed more depth, despite Herbig coming back after the break.
