    So here’s my thought.

Smith’s worst special teams were in the Steelers “stars and scrubs” roster days. You either made a gazillion dollars and didn’t play special teams or you were a walk on and did.

Now, they still have stars but their depth is better than it’s been in a long time. Smith has more and better athletes to work with.

Yes and no. The blast on Smith was coverage. We’ve had a crazy ride with punters…..not sure we put that on Smith. AB was one of the best punt returners in the NFL. Always had good to great place kickers. Did anyone see Skippy on Monday night?

And he should have had another block that was taken away mistakenly.

I completely agree. I wasn't sure why he was being kept around in previous years. It seems his weak spot was coverage and now, with the new rules on kick offs and an offense that can move the ball better, that weak spot is no longer an issue. Of course, that doesn't account for just how good we've been blocking kicks.

I was thinking of coverage units.

Miles Killebrew is far better than Jordan Dangerfield.

Edmunds is now one of the main gunners. Did the team ever have a athlete that good running down kicks before? Maybe Boykin? Say what you want about Edmunds career and defensive impact, but he is a no doubt about it first round of the draft caliber athlete.

By no means am I certain I am correct or even on to something. Just wondering out loud why/how things are better the past couple of years. I really doubt that a coach in his 70's has changed much about his approach and philosophy.

The players seem to genuinely love Smith. I like that. Especially for the ST unit. They play hard for him and one another.

    Re: Danny Smith

All around best STs in the NFL I have ever seen since 1972. Only thing missing are TDs on KOs which are almost impossible due to the rule change.

Smith should have his own football card.

James Pierre is always near the punt returner by the time they catch the ball.

    Corliss Waitman is consistent.

    Danny Smith coaches Boz…

    That’s a pretty nice credential.

I would say it’s 80% personnel. Maybe because the offense was an unknown, the coaching staff amped up on D and ST. What ever it is, I like what I see. I felt like…..going back to Cowher days, STs were an afterthought. Not getting that now.

I don’t want to see Boz attempting a sixty yarder for the win…I can’t handle that.

    I don’t either.

But one of these guys is gonna kick a 70 yarder soon.

I don’t know if Boz has got that in him, but I think the kid on the Cowboys just might.

Apparently the injured punter Cameron Johnston has been like an assistant coach helping Smith and Austin with a breakdown of each opponent's punter.

Could Smith be the best Steelers assistant coach since Dick LeBeau? Coach LeBeau invented the zone blitz while Smith has found a weakness in STs and tweaked the approach to mass blocking or at least it appears from the results.

I would go with Munch……just me. There have been a number of years when people on this board who were begging for Smith to be fired.

I feel like for the first time in a long time, our special team are an asset and not a liability.
