    Justin Fields case for QB1

Just so we don’t have to keep using a preseason thread to discuss the merits of Fields to be the QB1, here’s a new thread for that purpose.

    - - - Updated - - -

Here is my first contribution to the thread. For those who think Fields cannot do the spectacular or splash play when needed, here is a short highlight video from 2023. He can do stuff like that dime he threw Pickens that got called back, every Sunday.

You'll need to click on the link to watch the video in YouTube. It's only 5 minutes.

Good gracious. I forget just how strong this kid’s arm actually is.

The Steelers are coaching Fields differently in some way. In that highlight video there where a number of plays where Fields hit the top of his drop and then bounced and bounced and bounced again as he tried to decide what to do.

In contrast, it seems for the Steelers he is hitting the top of his drop and either throwing or taking off. Maybe they cut his number of reads down? But something seems to be speeding up.

I'm not going to be satisfied until I see Russell Wilson play. I want to see that Fields' play is actually better than Russ's.

According to 2023 On target stats, Fields is good at making plays under pressure, among the best, but just about the worst at on target percentage from a clean pocket. Want to know who is good at both?

    Wilson and Mahomes

Fields has trouble making the simple pass, sounds a little like trubisky

Does anyone remember what it looked like in Tannehill’s first day 4 weeks as a Titan?

Wondering if this is Smith’s fix a QB plan. High percentage throws. Low turnover exposure. Simple reads. Etc. Then slowly open it up as your reclamation QB starts trusting himself.

It seems to me Fields hasnt been coached well or needs to practice more to get better at making the routine play. Its obvious the guy has talent but is still an unfinished product. So what are we going to do? Start him and sit wWilson down? I thought this was the year we were going to make a push in the playoffs? If Tomlin keeps Fields as the starter and keeps Wilson on the bench without giving him a chance and creates another unhappy Qb situation (maybe Wilson demands a trade too) then i give up. And ill say Tomlin totally doesnt know what the fu** he's doing

So if Fields starts and the team goes 4-0 you’re gonna be pissed that Wilson is not playing? I don’t get that at all!

If its a 4-0 where the defense is playing lights out and were just getting by with narrow victories cause the offense cant generate TD’s yeah ill be pissed. We will not get very far like that.

We’ll have a future hall of famer with 26 TD’s last year on a poor broncos team languishing on the bench, yeah that will suck.

Alternatively, the back half of their schedule will likely make or break their season.

Let the highly mobile guy play behind the still gelling line. Get some seasoning. Hand it off to a fully healthy Wilson in a couple of weeks and hit your stretch run with a fully healthy Wilson.

Re: Justin Fields case for QB1

    One other thought.

Fields played under an enormous weight in Chicago of having to save the franchise. He didn’t.

Maybe it was his fault. Or maybe he flourishes with that weight removed.

An even more highly regarded prospect is currently looking poor in the same situation.

I don’t think the book is closed on Fields. I also don’t think it is clear that he will have any kind of significant resurgence.

On the other hand the bet that Wilson will get and stay healthy and perform better at his age is no sure thing either.

I think he can easily be as good as Jalen Hurts with very similar skill sets.

I think that’s fair and reasonable.

Of the two options; who do you think would be “better” for the Eagles right now Fields/Hurts or Wilson?

I’m not sure I know the answer to that.

Before I get on the Fields bandwagon I want to see him put up a lot more than one touchdown every two games. I also want to see what he can do when we're behind with two minutes or so left in the game and he has to direct a drive down the field with the opposing defense knowing he has to pass and throwing the kitchen sink at him.

If he does pass these tests then the Steelers should stick with him. Wilson should only be brought in when/if Fields is not doing the job.

The idea that some of the reason to continue to start Fields is that the Steelers o-line is leaky as all get out: https://steelersdepot.com/2024/09/un...t-rate-in-nfl/

They are not exactly playing like a brick wall out there. Fields mitigates some of that. A hobbled Wilson would not.

    2. Somewhere else a last season highlight video was posted of Fields. Watch that and notice how LONG it takes Fields to do something. Watch this package of plays. Totally different. He is taking his drop and making a decision. Someone on the Steelers staff has rebuilt this dude's brain so far. The only sack that was shown was when the "old" Fields came out. He hit the top of his drop and bounced a couple of times before he tried to take off. If he would've just trusted his initial thought that the routes were all covered and took off immediately, he likely would've had a big run.

    3. Routes that help other routes! Imagine the idea. Nice to see something different than Canada's mirror show.

    4. Fields has one heckuva an arm.

hah! He should've stayed in Thailand.

Remember all the fanfare he came into the league with? Now he is gonna wreck his second young QB.

I will admit I thought he would do well as an OC. Not so much...

Isn't Daniels performing the best of all the R1 quarterbacks? KK sucked as a HC, I witnessed that up close.

Is it Tomlin's fault that Wilson is hobbled? Is it Fields' fault? Is it this message board's fault? Maybe it's the S&C coach's fault. Maybe it's Wilson's fault if he wasn't warmed up or isn't rehabbing the best way. But otherwise, it is what it is. Wishing Wilson was playing aint gonna make it happen. And honestly, it could be a season long issue.

He’s wrecked or “tried to wreck” so many QBs…

    Patrick Mahomes
    Kyler Murray
    Caleb Williams
    Jayden Daniels
