    https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/s...act-extension/

Shortly after extending Cam Heyward's contract, the Pittsburgh Steelers have made another deal with a veteran starter. Pittsburgh is extending tight end Pat Freiermuth's contract just ahead of its season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Freiermuth has agreed to terms on a four-year, $48.4 million extension, according to his agency.

    Something that hasn’t been mentioned…

Deals done after training camp…usually not the “Steelers Way”.

Just think how much $$$ we saved by drafting Freiermuth instead of Creed Humphrey!

    Me too.

Freiermuth is young and important to this offense.

The first game isn't until Sunday, so technically the signing was still "before the season started".

TJ signed his extension on 9/9/21. They don't do negotiations after the season starts.

Ahhh. I thought it was after training camp was done.

    I agree.

You can't change what happened in the past, or who you should or shouldn't have drafted. The team needs to keep as many talented pieces as they can. Right now, in this offense...Muth is needed and should thrive.

I expect to see some really good football from him.

The Steelers have receiving targets. Hopefully the OL can hold off the pass rush long enough. Once we start moving the chains through the air they will have to stop stacking the box and the run game can get going.

He’s a hinderance in the run game and he might as well be on a milk carton in the passing game. What am I not seeing?

I'm wondering why myself he is not used a lot more than he is, doesn't make sense, he's certainly capable. Maybe something else is going on we don't know about.

It is one of the most curious stories of the season.

An OC that lives TEs and this guy only gets the ball twice a game.

He’s losing run game snaps to a WR seemingly.

    Is he hurt?

I have no issues with the deal they signed him to. Why would you? Because he’s not a blocking TE? There’s a lot of TEs out there that aren’t a blocking TE and really only a handful that blocked and received well.

Re: Steelers, Pat Freiermuth agree to four-year, $48.4 million contract extension

I like the player , I dont mind the cost ..... my issue is lack of use , if you knew he was gonna get such little use (and your system was in place when you signed him) why bother ....... I might be wrong but it seems like Darnell Washington gets as many looks .... this is WAY to much coin going to a player with such little utilization that's my issue

Mike Gesicki -1 year 2.5 million per year ..... currently 34 catches 383 yards and a couple tuddies

    Muuth- 5 years 48 million 31 catches 295 yards and 3 tuddies

Its pretty clear to me who is the better deal
Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles didn't value him either , now he is a Stain at the Mistake by the Lake 3 teams in 4 years more of a shooting star than a superstar

Hopefully they built an exit strategy into the contract.

Re: Steelers, Pat Freiermuth agree to four-year, $48.4 million contract extension

I like PF. He seems great. I also think he’s one of the most overrated players on the roster. And it’s not even the fact that he’s a laughable run blocker. Honestly I harp on that more to tweak the nose of just how excited the Steelers internet got when he was drafted to “help the run game”. It makes me laugh.

But he’s now been basically MIA from the passing game for a couple seasons.

I think we all figured that was a Canada/KP problem. I would even grant that it could still be QB related, as Wilson has never really thrown much to his TEs in his entire career.

Here’s the thing; is PF a good player caught in the gears of QB and scheme issues or is he just a guy with really excellent hands but not a complete enough game to impact?

I’ve never seen him as a big impact player. Certainly not the 7th highest paid TE in the league impactful. But I get this kind of thing wrong all the time. Mostly because I usually don’t know what I don’t know.

So what am I not seeing about PF?

For me it’s hard to tell on TV does he find openings like a Kelce but ball not delivered or is he constantly covered. The dude catches everything his way and fights for yards admirably. Washington has done well too so he’s taking touches away. But yeah he’s good for a few 7-10 yard catches a game but don’t recall many big plays. The TE tandem is basically the same as RB. 2 guys are needed to be successful. So maybe he’s over paid but I’d bet someone else would’ve paid him and it would be less deficient TE room for sure IMO.

All that is true. I was just wondering what others were seeing and I know some folks on here watch the fancy film views for some of the games.

Yep I’d like their diagnosis as well. Sorry no professional insight here just speculation. I do like seeing Washington involved though, hopefully he’ll incorporate jumping or fighting for football from here on out.
