    Trenton Thompson

    Hello Guys,

Trenton Thompson has been a gem for us playing in place of Minkah. I know he doesn’t have the size (weight) to play strong safety alongside Minkah when he gets back, but I absolutely feel he needs to stay on the field. His coverage and ball skills have been huge for us.

What do you guys think the Steelers can do to continue to give him snaps when Minkah gets back? I absolutely would like to see him continue to be on the field. What are your thoughts?

I think they will use him in their 3 safety alignment. Minkah/TT/Kazee.

They started it last year with Minkah/Edmunds/Kazee.

The game Thompson played in the preseason against Atlanta was what sold me on him. He was great that game. I think they had him playing CB in that game as well. I thought he should be a keeper back then…gotta get him a better number though…

Yes! I actually would be open to playing him at CB on the other side of Porter or in the slot. Wallace and Sullivan are the weak links in the secondary and I would rather they not be on the field. I also wonder how Rush is developing. I know his strength is man coverage.

Best scenario for me would be:
    RCB: Porter
    LCB: Thompson/Rush
Slot CB: Kazee (Has the quickness and coverage ability)
    FS: Minkah
    SS: Petersen

Whenever a player comes onto the 53-man roster quickly in the middle of the season because of injury, the results usually aren't very good. Thompson has been very good since he has gotten on the field and has been able to show some real ability.

To this point, he has been an upgrade from the other safeties outside of Minkah. The guy has just come in and played well. There's no other way to say it. He has not looked like a liability on the field in any way. Good for him. I hope he continues to play well and can land a long-term spot on the roster. Nothing he has done to this point would say that he should go to the bench when others are healthy. He has earned a role on the field IMO.

Thompson is a perfect example of why I HATE the Tomlin-Colbert era tendency to fill the bottom of the roster and even the PS with "trusted veterans". You know their ceiling. And their floor. It is the high floor that makes you comfortable. And I guess for most of the Ben R run, it was better to have a guy come in due to injury and have the floor of "not screw it all up".

But....there are so many players that cycle through the league and don't get a real game shot....and I say that has to miss more than a few players.

I would far rather see the Steelers consistently turn to and roll the dice with guys like Thompson, Walker, and Carpenter than Jack and Martinez. Honestly....depending on how the rest of the season goes....this may be a scenario where we see that Neal was a higher floor but far lower ceiling type of addition as well.

Yep. You and I have talked about this many times.

Why keep recycling mediocre players instead of trying different, younger talent to try to discover something much better than you have had? I just think that approach makes sense. It usually also makes your roster younger, faster, and less expensive than signing an 8-year vet that can't play.

I’m with you on this. If the skillset and athletic ability is there, focus more on getting them up to speed with the scheme. Why bring in bargain barrel veterans that know the scheme, but are picked on all game by other players because they are a liability on the field due to a lack of skills and athletic ability. It drives me nuts.

What good is knowing the scheme if you are giving up big plays all game because of a lack of ability?

Tomlin has a thing about “experienced veterans”. Remember there was a time when he wouldn’t play the rookies in starting roles…

    Re: Trenton Thompson

he is the flavor of the month , lets hope his gambling style doesn't bite us for a long TD ..

he has the tendency to undercut routes in order to make plays and thus far it has worked to his advantage picking one off almost another and a couple nicely times break ups ...

those sort of players cause a lot of wow moments but they are not always in your favor if he is even slightly late on one of those breaks it could be 6 points the other way .... I hope its a rarity and he has a chance to cements himself as a fixture before it ever happens otherwise we could see him benched as Tomlin only likes gamblers when they pay off

I like the kid he has moxie
Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. 4 teams in 5 years and traded twice in one off season

Tomlin is just trying to win the next game. That's his mentality.

Steelers waived S Trenton Thompson today.

Must not be recovered from his injury, because I thought he showed potential last year.

I thought he would at least be in the running for the final 53.

Maybe he will rejoin the New York Football Steelers with Elijah Riley, Gunnar Overrated, Allen Robinson, etc.

He definitely showed signs of life. I liked watching him in training camp last year. Showed a lot of promise.

When I first heard about Thompson being released, I was quite surprised.

But hopefully this means the Steelers like what they're seeing from Ryan Watts so far, who we have moved to strong safety.

Bust! Tomlin draft picks don't get developed.

Seems like there is a player like this every year - a player who shows some skills the year before but gets dismissed like a liverwurst sandwich at lunch the following year. Maybe it's a combination of low expectations and finding the right situation for a few games that just doesn't carry over?

Of course it could mean the guy just practices poorly but is a gamer. We could see him again if S injuries start to pile up.

I think he showed enough that if he is healthy he will find his way into someones camp

I am sure he will latch on to a team, but if he is the type of player that doesn't shine in practice, he could get released and find his way back again.
