Steelers Plan To Sign QB Russell Wilson To Long-Term Deal?

Even with Justin Fields on their roster, the Pittsburgh Steelers are riding with Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback for 2024 and beyond. The Steelers and Wilson expect to come to terms on a longer contract after the 2024 season, the Post-Gazette reported shortly after the news broke that the the Steelers had acquired Fields in a trade with the Chicago Bears.

Wilson signed a one-year veteran's minimum salary of $1.21 million for the 2023 season. The Broncos, who officially released Wilson last week, are paying him $39 million not to have him on their roster this season.

The Steelers' quarterback plan is for Wilson to be the starting quarterback, with Fields backing him up. The addition of Fields gives Pittsburgh an option in the event that Wilson doesn't pan out. If Wilson plays well this season, Fields will likely test the market next season as a free agent. He could also choose to stay in Pittsburgh as Wilson's backup.

...which means that Fields should probably be starting.

I sure as hell hope not. The only time they should talk extending him is as he's handing Mr. Rooney the Lombardi trophy next February.

Signing a 35 year old QB with declining skills to a long term deal worth big money is always a good idea.

I honestly give it until week 6 and by then there will be calls for Fields to start.

Didn't you hear....Russ says he can play another 5 years....down from the 12 he said before last year. Must be all that stretching.

Also....the tape shows his skills are not in decline. He's gonna beat Father Time like a drum.

Yeah, he puts on a show in front of camera doesnt he? Says all the right things, hits the buzz words, compliments those who will buy the schtick and then heads off to his private office in the facility while his secretary holds his calls as he works on a new catch phrase. "Lets Ride", "Unlimited", "Here we go".

It kind of seems like groundhog day all over again with an aging QB that the fanbase is going to cling to "the Super Bowl window is still open". But again, I have zero impact on the Steelers, so am just going to watch it all play out and be a fan like I have been for several decades.

I think it is hilarious that Wilson said he could play 10-12 more years when he hit Denver in 2022. Then in 2024, Wilson has that whittled down to 5-7 more years. I guess the altitude is a real killer.

Does he think no one will notice his bullshit?

In his defense, Tom Brady, at one point said he could play until 55…lol

i think they went on the same stretching routine....

I just think that 2 years for all the rest of us = 5 years for Wilson. He is so fast!

As long as he talks up how great TJ Watt and Minkah are, then mention 6 Lombardi trophies in the case and that he hopes to live up to the other greats like Ben and Terry, he will have a good part of the Steelers fanbase ingnore his bullshit.

That will also give him a few games where he can maybe fumble a ball away or miss a REC for a game winning TD and that same hopeful core of fans will deflect blame somewhere else and still back him up.

He knows the game he is playing and has played it before. He may be on the downside of his career, but he knows how to play people and appeal to their expectations. He is gonna rely on his "resume" to keep the faith in case he doesnt play well.

Hell, as long as the HGH milkshakes continued to flow and he had a loaded offense around him and the laundry continued to fly all over the field whenever an opposing defender so much as breathed on him, he probably could have continued to dink and dunk to his heart's content for another decade+.

lotta folks rooting for Russ to fail , consequently that is rooting for the Steelers to fail ... that's some big time hate right there ...as bad as I disliked Pickett I always wanted him to succeed he just always let me down
Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles didn't value him either , now he is a Stain at the Mistake by the Lake 3 teams in 4 years more of a shooting star than a superstar

Steelers Plan To Sign QB Russell Wilson To Long-Term Deal?

I don't think anyone is rooting for him to fail.

But if you can't see humor in some of the goofy stuff Wilson says and does; maybe take a break?

Like the photo of him and his wife at the airport going to Pittsburgh. As they candidly stare out the sunlit window. That means they paid for a 3rd person to travel with them and take photos. That's not a thing normal people do. And I will never not find that laughable.

When he joined Denver, everyone laughed at his decade plus and multiple SB claim. So, now he's got a more restrained message. That is also hilarious.

Hopefully he can still play QB really well. But he's a freaking loony tune.

I think you’re wrong on your first hypothesis. As to the other stuff, I like Russell off field about as well as I liked Ben off field for most of his career. It seems that Russell has no EQ. Some of that stuff really is funny.

first bold .... I think you are dead wrong when people CLEARLY have typed here they cant wait for around game 6 and they replace him with Fields , and others saying after a string of losses and Tomlin panics and replaces him with Fields ... if that isnt rooting for him to fail I am not sure what would be considered as such

second bold ..... you have never been with your wife or your friend and had someone snap a photo for you ?? me and my wife have many times , guess we hire someone to tag along with us .... damn I got to learn how to manage money better

Exactly. I think he is weird, but I also think that a lot of it is a guy that is trying to control the situation as much as possible.

I think he enjoyed the limelight when he was in his prime and successful, but now as he gets older and the skills start to slide he is still trying to hang onto as much spotlight as possible and doing more self promotion. Maybe he was never "one of the guys" in Seattle and that gets a pass when you get to a couple Super Bowls, but being that same weirdo in Denver while not playing that great got old really fast.

Hopefully he can be good in Pittsburgh, but I really cant think of a ton of guys that were 35 years old in their career and on the way down that had a big rebound in play. Maybe Jim Plunkett and Tom Brady?

For me the biggest thing is that he's so transparently fake.

Everything is a stage managed social media focused image creation.

He's the dude equivalent of people who post the "accidental" photos of themselves in full make-up and decked in sponsored clothes.

He's got people following him around to record videos and images to promote the "brand". It's literally everything I hate about the internet.

But as long as he doesn't suck for 60 minutes on Sunday... I will just laugh and move on.

But he did go to 9 pro bowls and 2 super bowls during his fakeness. I'm more interested in seeing that revitalized, even if it comes with some fakeness.

Yup, and people and organizations will put up with fakeness, or a guy being a prick, or a guy being somebody that abuses women....as long as they can produce results.

I think that is what got Wilson cast off from Seattle and Denver. That his results no longer eclipsed his personality, fakeness, narcissism or whatever it is. We'll have to see if things work out with the Steelers. Its low financial risk, but could be higher locker room/team culture risk.

I'm with you on this one. The fake managed social media persona stuff is so bad. But hopefully he is at least realizing some $$ from his online presence. Lots of people these days define their self worth by the amount of clicks or followers they get.

I am sure being married to a celebrity doesn't help the goofiness of his social media baloney.

    Hopefully this thread ends now

I bet Wilson already knows he won't have a separate office in the Steeler's facility.

The overwhelming majority of NFL players have the highest respect for Tomlin.

And I think that goes to the issue. I have no doubt that many of the stories about Wilsons behavior/ attitude are true. The problem in Denver was he was given free range to do what he wanted, or act any way he wanted, and then a new regime takes over and it's too late to start over again. Russell was Russell in Seattle, but it didn't matter much because they were winning. As long as he is winning here, and playing relatively well, I don't think his attitude is going to be that disruptive. This is an established team where most of the leaders are on defense and have no reason to kow-tow to the starting QB. And, whatever Tomlin's faults, as you said players do respect him.

Wilson’s contract is completely disposable. There’s not much to be high minded about. And Fields is the insurance policy as the backup.

Russ is married to a celeb and even if he wasn't, what is so bad about having a brand and hiring a photographer or assistant to snap photos of you for social media?

If I was a high profile football player I would try to maximize my brand.

Russ and his wife also have a production company and record label.

They are a power couple. I actually thought their first date was a sham since they run in different circles but he is a good dude. Probably the best thing that ever happened to her and vice versa.
