“Outside” QBs to win a Super Bowl
Generally it is rare for a QB that the team did not draft or develop within the team (ie Kurt Warner) to win a SB. Recently however there were two cases. That of Matt Stafford with the Rams and Tom Brady with Tampa. Fair enough to say there are no QBs of that caliber available as a free agent this year.
Going further back - Drew Brees counts as an outside QB but he was acquired after one year in the league so basically very early - and developed as a mature QB in Sean Payton’s system.
Trent Dilfer won a SB but Kent Graham could have won a SB with that Ravens defense so the QB was a non-factor. Names like Steve Young (messed abound in the USFL) and Doug Williams also come up but the one true outsider that won a SB was Brad Johnson with Tampa. And ironically his opponent Rich Gannon was also an outsider having had a great year with Oakland. Jim Plunkett revitalized his career with Oakland but this was another era.
And that about it. Generally a team needs to draft a QB and get lucky. This includes names like Bradshaw, Montana, Aikman, Elway, Brady, Manning, roethlisberger …and Mahomes.
With this said, in general we should not be looking at free agent QBs to help us win a SB unless they are the caliber of a Brees, Stafford or Brady. Getting a cousins or Wilson or fields will create some temporary excitement and hope but it will just delay and prolong our mediocrity.
I would stick with Kenny for the upcoming year. Tell him to take risks and see where it goes and if we suck and fail then we are in a position to draft a QB or move up without mortgaging our future.
and yes the stats on drafting QBs in the first round are also as poor as free agent QBs that become franchise QBs but based on SB history - it seems to be the only path.
(I would also recommend that we draft more than one QB per year and take some late round fliers (Brady, Purdy). Example: Washington drafted RG3 and Cousins in the same year.)
