    OC Types

The way I see it, there are several types of OCs. I think it's important, philosophically, to understand where you're shopping and what you're buying.

    Here are my types:

    • The ex-head coach (often unlikely to be hired as a HC again). Arthur Smith, Frank Reich come to mind.
    • The young QB Coach. He's usually unproven but comes from a good coaching tree (e.g., McVey, Shanahan, LaFleur).
    • The professional OC (for whatever reason never gets a HC job). Can be a bit of a journeyman, bouncing from team to team. Eric B. is an example.
    • The older offensive veteran near retirement (e.g. Tom Moore). Likely to not get a HC job due to their age.
    • The ex-player with little experience (usually a quarterback). There aren't many examples of these in football, but a lot in the NBA.

Each have their pros and cons. Which OC type would you prefer?

Not that he's interested, but I'd take a chance on Josh Dobbs if he were to up and retire.

    Super-intelligent. I have a feeling he'd make a good coach.

I don't care much if the next OC has experience or not on this role if he is competant....But I would love if the next OC is in the 49ers staff and that he is qualified for this job!

I want a coach with experience calling plays. Someone that understands the defense he's seeing and their tendencies. I don't want an OC that runs his system and that's all he knows. I like the former HC, and the QB coach type. They tend to be more about what play will work here and now while also able to set up for a future play based on tendencies.

Examining potential offensive coordinator candidates for Steelers

    JOE RUTTER | Friday, Jan. 19, 2024

For only the second time since 1999, the Pittsburgh Steelers will go outside the organization to find their offensive coordinator.

Coach Mike Tomlin said Thursday that he wants to bring in a newcomer as the full-time replacement for Matt Canada, who was dismissed in November midway through his third season on the job.

Tomlin said he wants a coordinator who works well with quarterbacks and has NFL experience as a play caller. That means someone who is comfortable working with Kenny Pickett as he enters his third — and most important — NFL season.

The other priority, Tomlin said, is finding someone who can get the offense to score more points after the Steelers ranked No. 27 in 2023 and were No. 25 in total offense.

An outside hire doesn’t mean a candidate must lack connections to the organization or the city. With that in mind, here are several possible candidates with and without ties to the franchise and region:

Is anyone tracking who has been interviewed so far? It would be nice to know what type they're pursuing. Seems like younger QBC types, but I might have missed some of the updates.

I think they should hire someone soon because all these new head coaches are going to start scooping up the best candidates.

Just appeared earlier today. No Idea of quality or consistency of updates. I know many don't like the site, but Alex K usually sticks to the facts and if they are going to do the work of collating the speculation from across the internet so I don't have to...I will take it.

I believe it’s just been:Robinson, Brown, Kingsbury and now Johnson that have been linked to them so far.

I’d like to see Robinson out of that group but wouldn’t be terribly upset with anyone not named Kingsbury. Just don’t want that.

Reports are that Raheem Morris promised Arthur Blank that Zac Robinson would be coming with him to Atlanta and they are going to give him big bucks to do so…

Yeah, I agree. I'd try to get him on staff somewhere and let him grow into the role.

I think it would be Kubiak or bust for me. I’d take Robinson as well but seems like he’s already gone to Atlanta.

Whoever it is, I just hope they know what they are doing and this crew just doesn’t sign Kingsbury for his name…

Robinson is now off the board. Hired by the Falcons. This is gonna start happening with all the good candidates.

They were always going to have to go with a 2nd or 3rd tier name.

This doesn’t mean the candidate won’t be excellent, it just means it most likely won’t be a “known” name. Those guys are going to have higher profile seats pulled out for them or go somewhere based on loyalty ties.

Not sad on that one. Chargers offense wasn't great and the Cowboys offense when he was there was just a pass happy offense that put up yards but the last two seasons hasn't been that great.

That is one interesting thing about having a well established HC. He won't have ties to the young talent . They need to hire outside young assistants at some of the other positions and see what they can offer.

One thing for sure, there’s job security in Pittsburgh. No need to worry about the HC getting fired like with many OC openings.

Although he is part of the interview process for the OC hire, ARII said the decision will be made by Mike Tomlin: "It would be a mistake for me to try to screw up the lines of authority."

It's not exactly a surprise that Tomlin has that authority and gets to make the call.
