Good. Now let's see if it happens

Sounds good so far
Music to my ears. I assume they lock up the OC first and allow them say in who this "competition" will be.

He'll be seeking candidates doesn't really say he won't promote from within

The bigger headline seems to be bringing in competition for Kenny.

Where's a link or source for these comments? They seem pretty newsworthy, but I can't find them in my regular 2-3 outlets for Steelers news.
So can this team win a SB with a decent OC and the likes of a Cousin's or Cousins type QB ?
Define what a "decent OC" means.
I think a good QB makes a decent OC look like a good OC. A bad QB gets OCs fired.
We had a horrible OC, and what appears to be a bad QB until Mason took over.

I just heard a clip from the press conference.... Tomlin was asked if Kenny will be the starter next year and Mike's reply was "he will, but there will be competition, etc..."
Parsing words, and reading between the lines, sounds like they don't plan on bringing in a "starter". Probably a cheap veteran, a la Trubisky.
I just don't see how they can keep Mason and Kenny on the same roster. I think they let Mason walk.

I parse the words to mean that Mike T is smarter than Dionte Johnson. Of course that's not saying much. Tomlin is just walking the tightrope and saying that Kenny is the man today, but we reserve the right to change our position.

The real question is what is the over/under for how many articles can Steelers Depot get out of this one press conference? I'm going with 10 as the O/U. Every sentence will get it's own article.
I just think the dynamics of those two could be tough. If Kenny starts the season as QB1 and starts off slow, do they go to Mason again?
I'm not one that thinks Tomlin is on the hot seat, but if he hitches his wagon to KP out of camp, and Kenny can't CLEARLY distance himself from Rudolph, Mike's gonna be in a really tough spot.

Tomlin said a new OC will be determined by himself, Art II, and Khan. There are some interesting candidates out there as others have mentioned in different threads. Remember the waiting part of the offseason?
Hopefully not THAT bad...obviously pure conjecture. There are so many variables right now - does Mike get an extension? Who will be the OC? Will Justin Fields be an option?
My preference is they make whatever move is necessary to grab Williams, Maye, or Daniels. Maybe Penix?? But, I don't see them giving up the capital required for the top two.
A franchise quarterback is so obviously vital to success in this NFL, the Steelers have to stop messing around with base hits and swing for the home run.

Those candidates are gonna start becoming unavailable rapidly. The best ones will become HC's, which we can't compete with. But the second tier of candidates (QB coaches and passing game coordinators) are gonna start filling the positions vacated by the ones becoming HC's. I hope this gets done sooner rather than later.
Fields is interesting cause unlike Tribusky I can actually see the talent is there when he plays. He may need another year or two to reach his potential if he ever is going too. The rest out there in FA don't seem better than Rudolph to me and I'm all for drafting a good one but unlikely like you said.
Fields is talented and can't read a defense. Most backup QBs are guys that can read defense but have not enough talent.
A bears fan asked me what does fields do really good? What does he make look easy? The answer is nothing. His highlight tape if good plays are all missing the open guy and running around until he gets someone open.

The OC in Chicago was bad in the last 2 years,so if the steelers have a new OC and he is good(their OC need to be good, this is crucial)maybe Fields could be a good option for the steelers...I don't know what the others on this board think about this option
Right, and Fields is still a young guy. So, we're not taking a chance on a veteran that is on the backside of his career.
Wonder what his market value will be? At first glance, it doesn't look like a crazy market for free agent QBs... Commanders, Falcons, Vikings, Broncos, Browns maybe?
If the Bears move on from Fields, I'd think there might be 5-6 teams with real interest, assuming the Patriots draft a QB. The Browns and Broncos might be cash-strapped, so Fields's price might be too steep?

The Bears currently have 2 top10 picks in this draft including #1 overall. Offering them another 1st round pick might be enough to get Fields in trade. I am not very high on the Steelers doing that, but a team like the 49ers or Buccaneers could.
