There’s a better chance of KP turning into a franchise QB then the Steelers finding a Purdy much less a Brady in the mid to late rounds

I am usually all for drafting a QB. But not this year. Unless they are truly getting rid of KP. There will not be enough reps to go around.
Assume the following depth chart:
1. KP: needs all the reps he can get to learn a new offense.
2. Mason Rudolph/Other Back-Up: will need to take the small amount of reps left and still soak up the offense. Not a good spot for a rookie.
3. Ryan Tannehill: can get by with not doing much. Assuming he is willing to stay around the NFL as a clipboard holding old guy.
We saw this in KP's rookie year. He didn't get enough snaps as the #3 to really learn things.

Right now, today, we have 2 QBs with Kenny Pickett and Mitch Trubisky. There is no Mason Rudolph currently on this roster.
Drafting a QB is not a bad idea. You at least want someone that takes over MT’s role as QB2. Bringing in a FA to be QB2 has it’s issues as well. If we bring back Rudolph, is KP now looking over his shoulder? If we bring in Tannehill who was Smith’s guy in Tennessee, is KP looking over his shoulder?
Personally, I don’t care if Kenny is comfortable or not. Bring in whatever combination gives this team the best chance to win now and compete for the foreseeable future.

IMO…drafting a QB is NEVER a bad idea. If I’m in a situation like the Bears or even a better situation with a better QB and have the chance to draft the highly touted number one QB, it’s a no lose situation…I draft him. I build around and spend around the one I have and then when his deal is up, I have another 5 seasons at a low QB salary and high QB play…

If there’s a guy there that grades out better than anyone on the current roster, I’d take the QB almost everytime. If the QB still grades high but I have a franchise guy, I’d still consider taking that QB…but it would take some thought and analysis.
In my opinion taking a QB in the 3rd or 4th round is a wasted draft pick over 95% of the time since it's very rare he's going to be at least a top 10 QB which is something needed in the NFL

I’m starting to like the idea of Tannehill possibly replacing Trubisky as the veteran backup. More than just the usual reason(MT sucks). Tannehill already knows Smith’s system and terminology in his offense. That would be a huge value to KP learning this offense in TC and preseason.
Still draft a QB.

Yeah I’d rather have Kenny and Tannehill with a rookie QB3 than keeping Mason.

Tannehill’s numbers are a little better than I thought. In 11 years he’s averaged 20 TDs and 10 INTs, 3200 yards, 7.3 Y/A and a passer rating of 91.2. Injuries have hampered him the past 2 seasons, but if he’s healthy again, he’s the perfect candidate to be a bridge QB under his old OC. If Kenny can’t beat him out in his third year so be it.
