Pickett didn’t need to read progressions because the offense never had any.
I think he's definitely missed some (which all QBs do) but I also think there's definitely been some that were one-read. Just based on the fact that the same pattern has occurred with Ben and Mitch.
I'm not expecting a world of difference though...hoping we will see little subtle changes...maybe things we don't even see. Looking for positives...even if it's just a couple.
That would be nice. And I will be a happy fan with ANY positive movement.
I just think we all need to buckle up for a bumpy ride.
I honestly expect a 1-2 game surge while the newly elevated coaches bring some changes. Then, I expect it to crater and everyone dies screaming and burning once defenses adjust to the changes.
Here's Tomlin's reason...
“Mike Sullivan will be the primary play-caller, and there are two really critical reasons why he’s doing that”, he said. “He has experience in that in two NFL cities, New York and Tampa. And he’s the guy that deals directly with Kenny, and so there’s great fluidity there from a play-calling perspective in an effort to best put Kenny in position, particularly as it pertains to the passing game”
True!
I was actually a fool that got fooled by Canada. I thought that surely a guy who put up points and yards like he did at various stops and used motion and other current concepts had a basket of useful ideas.
I didn’t realize how much of his system was what happens when you copy a bunch of stuff and have no idea why it works.
The perfect example is whatever that pass to Warren against the Browns was where 3 defenders ignored the WRs and just flew at Warren. Somehow that play worked in Canada’s mind. Like they probably ran it in walkthrough and he explained it and everything. I would love to have seen that.
This is what was the red flag for me:
LSU fans hated him...only Bowl loss for LSU in that 2015-2019 period and I believe he was unemployed altogether in 2019...

Yeah...I'm not sure what is happening on the play. I would love to know the play/progressions and how they thought the play was supposed to work. That's one of the plays where I feel like Kenny missed progressions but he throws the ball so quickly to Warren (like it was the only read) and all the defenders are going there like they knew that was the play resulting in what I believe was both DJ and PF were open up field...if I remember correctly.
I think the WRs were supposed to stay, act like they were getting the screen, then block for Warren. None of that happened. They aren't allowed to block while the ball is in the air but it was such a quick pass it would have been just a look inside and go block. Once the WRs released into routes the play was done. I don't think KP was ever going off-script there or else he throws it to someone else. Which he never even looked at. Just a bad play all around by everyone involved.
I can see it now. But then I figured it was a guy climbing the ladder.
But since I don’t even remember that he coached at Wisconsin , that should’ve clued me in. But, to be fair, that was a Rose Bowl UW team that ran behind multiple backs and threw like 12 passes or less per game.
Kenny Pickett has thrown for less than 160 yards in 4 straight games.
will we see improved play today ????
Soon we will find out

Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles didn't value him either , now he is a Stain at the Mistake by the Lake 3 teams in 4 years more of a shooting star than a superstar
HUGE improvement today in play calling. Getting KP into a good rhythm and having pass catcher actually open for FINALLY using the middle of the field.
KP was good all game and would have been better if the refs called DJs TD a TD like it was. Would have been right at 300yds and a TD.

lets see (and hope) it continues but I do think the 30th ranked pass def had an impact as was the fact the Bengals didnt sustain drives do to the lack of quality QB play meaning the defense not only being not all that good was also tired ...
was the play calling better ? absolutely
was the execution better ? absolutely
does 1 have anything to do with the other , most likely it does .... if you go to work happy and thinking you have a chance at success you normally have a better attitude towards what you are doing ... this team has not had hope in so long they came to work already half defeated IMO so yes baby steps and building blocks but I will not get overly excited because of the circumstances that set the table

Yup, the throws down the middle to Muth were tight windows. The sideline passes to Pickers and Droponte Johnson were really good on target throws. As was the TD to Johnson, which wasnt confirmed as a TD. KP has the tools, which is why they wont give up on him.
He even stood in and took a few hits while throwing, with a guy in his face. The pass protection wasnt bad, but still not great. I guess the sky isnt falling for 1 more week, until they lose a game they are supposed to win.
I'm actually going to partially agree with Dwinsgames here. I'm not going to make the same mistake as the Kenny-bashers and make definite long-term conclusions based on a small sample. As encouraging as this game was it was still only one game. Kenny and the offense still have to prove that they can do this consistently. The real test for Kenny and the new OC duo will be if they can continue this success when they face better defenses who have a better read on the new Steeler offensive tendencies.
We should rehire Canada just so we can fire him every week!
I think moving him to the sideline was just an incremental step in getting him out of the stadium completely. Would have been rude to throw him straight out through the booth.
Huge difference in this game all the way around. However need to see more and make sure it was not a fluke. But it is really astounding how Canada is gone and all of a sudden the middle of the field is used, the Tight end was used, Najee is all of a sudden looking like a good RB, Kenny is making better throws.
There is still a lot to work on. Red Zone being a huge part of it.
However, Tomlin should still not get a free pass for this. He hired and promoted Canada. He kept Canada for the longest stint of his career. He allowed the offensive philosophy to be implemented and to continue for almost 3 years. The absolute ineptness of allowing all this to continue as long as it did was inexcusable for any head coach at the highest level of the sport. Even if your kind and give the guy a second year he should have never been retained for this 3rd season. The amount of time and development wasted with this guy is absurd. Whether you like Tomlin or not this was absolutely one of the worst failures of a coach. Either too loyal or whatever reason and you keep one of the worst OC's ever too long or you are inept enough to not see the issue. Inexcusable for someone who is supposed to be running the ship.
I’m sure that it was just a coincidence that the team amassed over 400 yards for the first time in 58 games the first game after Canada was fired.
You know. They talked about communication from Sullivan / Faulkner and players on the sidelines. I think in a few shots on TV that we could see there was a lot of interaction from those guys with the players and I guess its expected from brand new playcallers in that situation. But I think its important to be on the sidelines and be able to look your young QB in the face and talk things thru with him as an OC.
It just looked like there was some collaborative discussion going on between coach-players. While the body language with Canada didnt seem that way as he was on the sidelines. In hindsight the body language looked like guys had enough of Canada, so it was time for him to go.
