Keeping them both is going to be a challenge. Like the days with Woodley and Harrison. You look at how many good players we had on both sides of the ball.
The cap stuff is staggered enough that it shouldn't be a problem.
By the time you have to pay Watt again, Heyward is off the books. By the time you have to pay Highsmith again, Watt is mostly off the books. Etc.
Not many on offense are going to be costing you big $$$ for the next 4 years.
Just look at how much bigger Alex has gotten since his rookie season. He has become a beast. A player like him that is constantly working on improving himself and his on field play, you pay for that. You don’t trade him or let him walk in FA without a sound offer.
Sure.
But as long as Watt wants to suit up, he’s a Steeler. That’s just how it is with HOF talents.
So I was taking the hypothetical that the team can only have 2 of Watt, Highsmith, and Herbig for either cap $$$ reasons or too few snaps to go around.
In that case, keep the old HOF and the youngest of your options. Trade the good but not great pass rusher on his 3rd contact.
Not an ideal scenario but one of those things that happens in the salary cap NFL sometimes.
Almost certainly injury or performance will solve the potential log-jam long before Steelers have to consider drastic measures.
