Report: "Handful: of season-long suspensions coming from NFL for gambling

Let's hope this doesn't turn into a thread that should be in the Steelers Talk section.

Several NFL players have faced significant disciplinary action this offseason for violating the league’s policy on gambling, and another round of suspensions is reportedly coming.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday that Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers is among a “handful of NFL players” who are expected to receive season-long suspensions this week for violations of the league's gambling policy.

In total, seven players have been suspended over the last two years for violating the NFL’s gambling policy. The most significant was star wide receiver Calvin Ridley, who was suspended last year and reinstated this offseason. We then saw promising Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams and several other players receive bans of varying lengths.

A report last month said a second wave of suspensions was likely coming.

It seems like there has been some confusion and/or carelessness regarding what is allowed and not allowed now that the NFL has partnered with gambling companies. The league recently gave players six key rules to follow, so perhaps that will lead to fewer suspensions going forward.

"The NFL held a conference call on Tuesday during which six key rules for players were emphasized. The points of emphasis are as follows:

    1. Don’t bet on the NFL

    2. Don’t gamble at your team facility, while traveling for a road game, or staying at a team hotel

    3. Don’t have someone bet for you

    4. Don’t share team “inside information”

    5. Don’t enter a sportsbook during the NFL playing season

    6. Don’t play daily fantasy football"

This from a league that is very much in bed with multiple gambling interests where every game broadcast is dominated by commercials for one sports book or another and one of its (formerly) flagship franchises is now based in what is literally the gambling capital of the world.

The NFL's hypocrisy is truly laughable.

It outrageous based on what you just said that a player can’t throw a bet down on baseball or basketball or whatever they want not named football.

Here’s a question: can a player, say Dalvin Cook, place a legal bet on an NFL team to win the Super Bowl right now as he’s currently unemployed? What about a guy like Franco, if he were alive today? Hall of Fame guy, very involved with the team…what happens if that guy places a bet?

Does Dalvin Cook get suspended four games when he’s signed? I would imagine that’s how the NFL would play that card but I think Cook could argue in a court?

This is the list to date…this also looks like it answers the Cook Question.

Elites go by a different set of rules. Hypocrisy at its finest but that's the way it's been since the beginning of time, and I don't see it ever changing.

lest not forget this is also a league that FORCED steelers minority owner to sell his stock in the team because he owned a horse racing track ... as if that has any bearing on nfl football games

What kind of moron can't refrain from gambling when their multimillion dollar job is at stake ? i had to give up weed to keep my job ...
if these degenerates are so hell-bent on placing a wager, i would think the obvious workaround would be to have someone else place the bet for you. its not rocket science people.

The world is filled with people that make bad decisions.

If I was making millions as an NFL player, I would not be losing salary because of gambling. It's just not worth it and it's not smart.

Although I agree that banning gambling helps with the image and integrity of the NFL because it can affect the outcome of games. It might make sense to charge a flat fee for commercial spots + a % of the take. The hypocrisy is what the NFL supports politically which can do more damage to its image and the country.
