East coast rip tides can be pretty dangerous. Usually they caution people and it’s sounds like other people were struggling. I hope he hadn’t had a lot to drink. You can manage the rip tides if you pay attention. I’ve been sucked under a couple of times on the Outer Banks, (and I’m a strong swimmer). Ability to swim has nothing to do with it.
Anyway, RIP Mr Mallett. Taken way too young at 35.

I saw this yesterday. So sad. Far, far too young.

I see that there have been a large number of drownings on Florida beaches lately. People really need to be careful.

I'm like you Hawkman. I come from a competitive swimming background. I've been in that situation too. You can't outswim the power of the ocean. You have to know what to do if taken in a rip current and work your way out of it.

I am a very strong swimmer, yet I fear certain conditions with moving water. I fear it and am respectful of it because I understand how powerful moving water is. Far too many people don't get it and put themselves in danger.

I hope this gets more attention and more people understand how to try to deal with rip currents or the ocean in general. Hopefully it helps save some lives.
