Belichick, according to ESPN, finished outside the top three of the Atlanta Falcons' finalists, and that was the closest he came to landing any of the available -- or even potentially available -- head-coaching positions. Belichick apparently tried to convince owner Arthur Blank and the Falcons' front office that he was willing to just be the head coach and not have full control over the organization, but was unsuccessful and then got blindsided when the Falcons instead decided to hire former Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.

"He was essentially voted off the island," a Falcons source told ESPN.

Belichick came extremely close to joining Shula as the only coach to preside over a perfect team in 2007.

Is Bill Belichick the greatest coach ever? In football, when it comes to the greatest head coach of all time, we have to give the title to Belichick. Winning six Super Bowls is more than anyone else, and unlike those who won league championships, Belichick did it in the modern day, with football as advanced as ever.
He has a total of nine Super Bowl appearances, and his competitive itch isn’t going away any time soon. It will be difficult for anyone to dethrone ‘The Hoodie’ from his spot as the greatest coach in NFL history, but that’s what they said about Shula and Lombardi too.

YOU have to give it to BB. Not me….Lombardi as far as I’m concerned. Three NFL championships, two SBs and no losing season. Died at 57. Who knows what might have happened had he lived longer. Much higher character than BB. Brady made him look like a great coach. If greatness is determined strictly by SBs then you keep believing that. To me, there’s a lot more that goes in to it.
