    This should be fun!

At #132....I can not find something not to like about this pick.

He can see the field right away in 2023 in some limited sub-packages as a modified OLB. Remember that package they ran with Dupree-Watt-Highsmith later in Highsmith's rookie year and it totally baffled teams? Herbig can do that right after he gets off the bus.

He is a smart football player with an excellent feel for the game and what offenses are trying to do.

BUT....he just isn't big enough to stick outside in the NFL. And I think that if he adds too much weight it will take away his quickness. I really hope they move him inside long term. The only reason he isn't viewed as a good ILB pick is that he has basically never done it. Not a ton of snaps where WISCO asked him to play in space. He was an attacking player for the most part. I am willing to bet that he can make the transition and could earn a starting ILB job in 2024.

    Is this draft even real.

I dont think I've ever experienced the fan base and front office being equally enamored with each and every pick.

    And rightfully so

he is a a chess piece in our system I think they will move him around , have some blitz packages for him etc ..

I do not see him as a starter as a rookie unless injury forces it to be ...

that said its still April a lot can happen between now and September
Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles didn't value him either , now he is a Stain at the Mistake by the Lake 3 teams in 4 years more of a shooting star than a superstar

Herbig charging up the middle on one of those A gap blitze this defense has always loved and Bush stunk at should be fun to see. Or that twist that Dupree and Heyward used to run a handful of times a game...

no , its actually a pretty good one ...many had him as a 4th round kinda guy so to get him at the end of the 4th the value is there

Herbig is a gamer. Not going to blow you over with athleticism or size but he’s tenacious and high motor. Should fit in as a guy that can sit behind Watt and Highsmith and learn. Don’t forget TJ isn’t getting younger and Highsmith isn’t locked up long term yet.

Herbig has a real feel for blitzing. He finds his way through traffic and has a real knack for getting to the spot. Even if he struggles early to just line up at EDGE and defeat NFL tackles, I'm sure they will give a lot of different looks when he's in the game and disguise who is coming. They'll move him around and kick him inside.

I really like him as a player, and I do think he could put on a few pounds if they want him to. They may explore your idea of seeing if he can kick inside or have a package where he is utilized that way. It's going to be fun.

Safe to say I’m tickled. He helps. I mocked him to our original 4th. But even then I felt less than 50-50 he’d be around.

he is underestimated. Good stuff. His film and game shows a guy who just gets after it and makes plays!!

Does Khan get any props from you for trading down, getting an additional pick, and still landing Herbig?

Maybe true. I worry that at OLB he's Sutton Smith 2.0. But I think at inside LB he can become Germaine Pratt or Mack Wilson.

I would take a Germaine Pratt clone in a heartbeat!

For what it’s worth, Nate Herbig is only 5 lbs lighter than T.J. Watt when watt was drafted.

I like this kid’s motor and I think he will be an impact player.

it seems that Wisconsin running the 3-4 defense is one of the reasons why we seem to want to pick them. They pick up the defense much quicker.

    Good points.

Watt was just much stronger at the point of attack even at same weight.

Maybe with Herbig it isn’t so much weight but putting on more grown ass man strength?

    Did Watt mentor Herbig?

I was just thinking that. And yes he does. Especially if this pick and the 3rd rounder was a hit.

profootballnetwork combines 70 scouting lists to create an overall picture of player rankings.

Herbig - his ranking after averaging all the collective football rankings was number 91. That’s a late third round and not even the fourth. I thought he’d talk to mid 4 and hoped the Steelers would grab him. Never did I think he’d fall to a late fourth round pick. Pumped.

    btw:

Benton’s number was 60 overall as a collected ranking overall.
    Porter: 12
    Broderick Jones: 14
    Darnell Washington : 31

so it’s no wonder everyone loves this draft. Everyone single one of the Steelers top 5 picks fell for whatever reason. Except Broderick Jones who was ultimately taken exactly at his overall collectively averaged ranked spot of 14. Some fell a lot. Washington a tonne. For whatever reasons. There’s never been a draft to my knowledge where the Steelers took all of their first 5 picks at a spot lower then where they were ranked.

I like pro football network as they take 70 big boards and compile a list and update it regularly as various big boards are updated.

side note: B Young was ranked 2 overall. Stroud 4.

No. He lost the trade on value. He got lucky to get a late third rounder at the end of the fourth. You don’t get props for mere good fortune.
