Penguins Make Changes in Hockey Operations

The Pittsburgh Penguins have relieved President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke, General Manager Ron Hextall and Assistant General Manager, Chris Pryor of their duties, it was announced today by Fenway Sports Group.

John Henry and Tom Werner issued the following statement:

"We are grateful to Brian, Ron, and Chris for their contributions to the organization over the past two seasons, but we feel that the team will benefit from new hockey operations leadership. While this season has been disappointing, we believe in our core group of players and the goal of contending for the Stanley Cup has not changed."

The search for new hockey operations leadership will begin immediately.

Ron Hextall ruined both PA hockey teams.

Good for the Pens finally realizing how awful Hexy is as a GM.

LOVED him as a player. Loathe him as a GM.

Flyers were ruined well before Hextall. He just made it worse.

I wonder if Mario will be visible again? When FSG bought the Pens, Mario was said to remain the public face of the franchise. Obviously, that has not been the case. From what I understand he is rarely even seen at home games. Maybe he didn't like how things were being done? Maybe he is tired of being the face of the franchise and wants to play golf and drink wine? Either way, if FSG is smart, they will try and make Mario visible again - at least until new management is hired and up and running. I can see Mario sitting in his wine cellar having a "God Father" moment: "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in."

I don't have much faith in a corporate sports conglomerate form Boston running a Pittsburgh sports franchise.
