This season was lost back in August

Hold a "Quarterback Competition" and give the starting job to the clear third place guy, and not only give him the job, but Captainship as well. Then when the "bridge" Quarterback is proven to not be any good. Make a desperate switch to the rookie who outplayed him and should've started to begin with. But Mikey "doesn't start rookies".

Do not hold the crappy offensive coordinator accountable for a consistently bad offense.

And another Tomlin staple, give up 37 points in a critical game to a team missing its best receiver with a 100% healthy Defense.

Tomlin stared into the abyss without Big Ben and blinked. He was afraid of the inevitable rebuild with Pickett and tried to slap a bandaid on it which failed. One thing you cannot deny is that Mike Tomlin has truly earned his first losing season. Probably one of the worst Steeler coaching efforts I have ever seen. Some soul-searching needs to be done in the organization this offseason.

No argument, I’ll just add the season may have been lost in august but regarding our playoff chances: as the late great Chick Hearn would say: ‘our chances we’re slim and none and slim just left the building’ (or stadium)

Don't know why Trubisky was pretty much handed the starting job before he even took a training camp snap. But that was total BS

Cause that’s what Tomlin does…he takes care of the veterans and surrounds himself with “his loyal coaches”…who all suck…

Well, we're rebuilding now, we're just doing it DURING the season. At least we're heading for a top 5 pick at this point.

Re: This season was lost back in August

what a dumb ill informed thread ...

there is ZERO fact involved in the OP , its all folk lore from people on this board ...

Mitch got the starting job because he out performed EVERYONE in camp ... my guess is you wasnt at camp at all nor did you read anything from those who were at camp ...

the first two weeks Mason was top dog in camp ( and he should have been he was the only guy who knew the playbook )

by week 3 it all changed and Mitch was the top guy , Mason slid to two ....

by camp end Mitch was the guy with Kenny riding his coat tails close by and Mason fells to third .....

but hey don't let the facts get in the way of a good argument because clearly your entire premise is based on myth
Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles problem now

Which makes those four games wasted with Trubisky all the worse. Imagine how much further ahead Pickett would be in his development. Maybe we wouldn't be staring down 3-7 and have another Ben-esque 2004 in out midst. Mojouw said it best: There was no team in the NFL that went down the Veteran "Bridge QB" route and not immediately regretted it. If we didn't draft Pickett, fine. But we did. We got the (hopeful) guy of the future. The future is here and now and it should've been embraced, but Tomlin lived in his fears.

At least that stupid "No Losing Seasons" narrative can die finally.

Re: This season was lost back in August

I'll take the nice words. But I stole the idea from many other places.

I think another aspect of all of this that is being raised here, was the off-season plan is also now bearing additional crappy fruit.

Pickett and the entire offense should have been force fed reps all summer and early fall. In fact, I would have nailed Trubisky and Rudolph to the bench and repped Pickett until his arm fell off. It has an impact that Pickett didn't play that much in earlier practices. You read about how other teams have prepped their fancy new first round QB and they don't have him wandering around the far practice field with the scout team for stretches of the off-season.

The Steelers treated KP like he was some surprise 4th round pick that showed promise. Not their hand-picked preferred heir apparent.

From the moment the final whistle blows on the 2022 season, every single decision this franchise makes has to be towards correcting that.

    1. Find an offensive staff that can insulate, incubate, and develop KP.
    2. Improve the blocking in front of him.
    3. Add any additional players/weapons needed for the answer to #1 to run their "system".
    4. Clear the back-up QB situation. Ditch MT and Rudolph. Bring in someone with actual NFL experience for "vet presence" and then sign some randomly promising in some way or another first to third year guy to be the one you actually play if KP misses time.

    BUT BUT BUT ......

it was Ben's fault , he wasnt mobile ( rolls eyes ) we need a mobile QB to fully install Canada's brilliance (that no other place saw as he never lasts more than 2 years at any stop in his career )

It's pretty common for the bridge veteran to get handed the starting job. It's not a Tomlin thing. There's a reluctance to start the freshman game 1 in most organizations. Now, Canada on the other hand, he should've been gone last year. That's what you call signing the losing ticket.

This team has issues, including a few glaring show-stopper issues, but it's still underachieving.

Both of those seem to be hallmarks of the Tomlin regime.

OP is right. What would have been correct was start Pickett week 1 after a full camp working with the 1s, OR, starting Pickett after the bye, OR, sitting Pickett the whole season.

Throwing Pickett in at half time one week before playing the Bills was dumb.

And Pickett completed 80% of his passes in preseason for a ridiculous rating even if he didn't pass DWINSGAMES Training Camp Eye Test.

Where I agree that Pickett out of the gates would’ve been a better option from an evaluation stand point, it wouldn’t have made a difference for the teams overall record or success. There’s plenty of history that will debunk the talents of any QB that was behind that O-Line and running this “offense”. Maybe Steve Young could improve the team but anyone else, I highly doubt it…

you're a fucking idiot if you think any coach should start a guy who was at best 2nd during camp based on 2nd and 3rd string reps in preseason (but we knew you was an idiot long before this thread) ... please take this quarter and buy yourself a half a clue

also way to make it up as you go along carry on dickhead we expect nothing less from you

Reminder: Tomlin saw it fit that the trashfire we saw yesterday was the best Quarterback on the team and gave him the starting job and Captain status before the season.

Probably the biggest Free Agent blunder since Kent Graham.
