    New Steelers OC Candidates

Just put a name or 2 in play for discussion. Not like we control the hiring anyway.

I'll get the ball rolling with one from NFL ranks and one from college ranks.

    Brian Schottenheimer:
Has been OC, QB coach, Passing game coordinator in the NFL and college ranks.
Been around football as a player, coach, coach's son all his life.
Dad was an NFL Head Coach.

    David Shaw:
Currently the HC at Stanford(since 2011).
Dad was an NFL asst coach.
Played college ball under Bill Walsh and Dennis Green.
    Has NFL coaching experience.
Was Andrew Luck's OC at Stanford.

I don’t even know…I like the idea of that Eagles QB coach.

I just want Matt Canada as far away from this team as possible and the fact that it hasn’t happened yet is disturbing to me…

Nobody knows. That's the whole point.

Kyle Shanahan, McVay, and Matt LaFleur all coached with Mike Shanahan in Washington and they were not a great team. Now suddenly they are all geniuses. What happened? Many of Mike Shanahan's assistants have gone on to become HCs in the college ranks. But we don't want college guys? Same tree.

You forgot to leave a name to discuss.

Yes we know. This is not a bash Canada thread please. We have close to 20 of those already.

Also, you forgot to leave a name to discuss.

    I guess that is true.

    Brian Johnson, Eagles QB coach:
2nd season with the Eagles as QB coach.
    College OC since 2012
Was QB coach for Dak Prescott and Nick Fitzgerald at MissState, and OC for Kyle Trask at Florida.

I actually love the thought of Lefty coming back as OC. I don't think he would be a popular choice on here though.

    Byron Leftwich:
OC/QBs coach under Bruce Arians at AZ and Tampa.

    Re: New Steelers OC Candidates

I am not the person to come up with specific names. I think you can take almost all the "hot" current NFL OC's and college HC's off the list. Those guys will be gunning for and interviewing for NFL head coaching jobs. I guess the Steelers could wait for the dust to settle and see who doesn't get a seat in the annual game of coaching musical chairs and then grab an OC.

I suspect that they will have to make about 3 hires from lesser well known names. Reach into the position coach ranks to find a new OC, Qb coach, and WR coach. I would like to see the OL coach replaced as well. And a few new offensive coaching positions added. Call them run game coordinators or passing game coordinator or quality assistants or whatever. Just get some ideas in the building.

From the realm of wishes and prayers here's a 'can't miss' OC candidate. Swing for the fences and make Sean Payton an offer he can hardly refuse. If he is still retired from HC duties it makes sense. Obviously the long stretch of long stretches. But there it is.

    New Steelers OC Candidates

What about the HC from LV? He is going to be jobless after this season (if not sooner) and Inrecall him having a decent offense in the past (but I could be wrong there).

Also Big Ben, he can at least read a defense and put together a gameplan on the fly. He would need some good coordinators to help him though.

Just to keep the conversation going....what if Reich caught lightening in a bottle once and can't do it again?

He looked like a genius when Wentz played out of his mind and legitimately was a 3rd down playmaking monster. He also looked great when Foles somehow played like a really good QB.

Then....not so much? I mean I know he's had a parade of broken down former good QBs come through Indy and the OL has degraded and the weapons have been questionable...

....But has Reich done anything to scheme them out of that? I don't know. I don't watch any Colts football.

Bottom line, is Reich still innovating and helping his offensive players succeed beyond their abilities, or is he dining out on 2 great seasons awhile ago? I hoping some of you know because that would be cool to get some more information on.

The offensive philosophy has always been heavily pass oriented with no
balance under Tomlin. The OC can keep changing with similar results. Tomlin has stopped talking about "splash plays" and is overwhelmingly focused on not turning the ball over. It's like if Alex Smith was a head coach. Not sure how an OC can change that especially without a HOF QB having the gravitas to push the ball
down the field without worrying about being benched.

Bryan Harsin just got let go at Auburn.

Has been a HC and OC/QB coach. All at the college level.

Its quite possible that all it was lightning in a bottle. I also think part of the problem with Reich is personnel. They keep trotting Jonathan Taylor out there and he’s terrible. They put Deon Jackson out there and the team all of a sudden has a running game. Was a totally different offense. He’s better than what’s being trotted out there week after week for the last three years.

I don't want Reich...He was fired in mid season with the chargers as OC,several years ago.Yes he was important for the eagles in 2017(even if Peterson was their play caller) but outside of that he did nothing special even if the problem at the QB position with the colts is not all his fault

As the OC? He was the passing game coordinator as well as DBs coach for the Lions. The Lions have done well offensively in the passing game but not so much with stopping the pass.

He did manage ( or someone did ) to bring out the best in Goff but guessing if he was responsible they would have just relieved him of his DB duties and kept him on as passing game coordinator

That's just it. I don't know either. As the passing game coordinator I would put both credit and blame on him for the passing game. Same with the DBs, which seems to be what got him fired.

OK. Wasn't it Haley that kept throwing the screen passes at or behind the LOS? I seem to remember there was a thing with his play calls too when he was here. Something he just called over and over. Something that didn't work.

Maybe I'm thinking of a mix of the last 4 OCs?

Haley was just as guilty in fact that is why he was brought in to keep Ben from getting killed by Arians system of a lot of slow developing plays ...

Haley gave us a ton of bubble screens and short passes ....

maybe I am in the minority (not alone though I'm sure) but I want a balanced offense that utilizes the entire field with the passing game ... make teams defend the entire field not just 10 yards of it

you could change the name Reich to Tomlin and ask the same questions. maybe Reich just needs a new OC ?

Very true. But Reich is supposed to be an offensive guy. That’s his selling point.
