i doubt washington stays on the board that long. instead of spending a high pick on another receiver, why not get another quality TE ? tippmann at 6-5 315lbs could compete for a job at LG and C.

    Re: 2023 Mock Drafts

Looking at the draft trade value chart, the Steelers could trade both 2nd round picks to Washington at 16 and get back to back 1st round picks at 16 and 17. What are the pros and cons of that move? Roughly 14 spots since we would be moving in front of ourselves.

    Re: 2023 Mock Drafts

IMO, having those two picks between 32 and 50 are worth more than one pick inside the top 20. This has a lot of needs and giving away potentially starting caliber players doesn't help solve that issue.

I was thinking of taking an approach similar to this instead.

    RD1.17 - CB Christian Gonzalez - Oregon

    RD2.32 - OT Anton Harrison - Oklahoma

    RD2.49 - ILB Jack Campbell - Iowa

    RD3.80 - OG/C Jarrett Patterson - Notre Dame

RD4.117 - WR Jonathan Mingo - Ole Miss

RD7.212 - DL Zacch Pickens - South Carolina

RD7.223 - OLB Aubrey Miller - Jackson State or OLB Isaiah Land - Florida A&M

Washington doesn't have many picks in the top half of the draft, so I'd think they'd be open to it, but I don't see the benefit to Pittsburgh. 2 swings at the plate (2A and 2B picks) vs 1 at 16. Intriguing yes, but I would take the extra player.

For this draft in particular, I hope they stand pat at their current selections for the first 3 rounds. If they want to do some wheelin' and dealin' in rnds 4 and later so be it. But I like where those first 4 picks fall.

    Re: 2023 Mock Drafts

Used Fanspeak and made a couple trades to move down and pick up some extra draft picks. I would be very happy if things could ever possibly fall this way.

    17: R1 P17 OT Broderick Jones - Georgia

    32: R2 P1 LB Trenton Simpson - Clemson

    49: R2 P18 DL Gervon Dexter - Florida

    80: R3 P17 CB Jaylon Jones - Texas A&M

    126: R4 P24 G Henry Bainivalu - Washington

    190: R6 P13 WR Jonathan Mingo - Ole Miss

    200: R6 P23 S Christian Young - Arizona

    236: R7 P17 TE Brenton Strange - Penn State

    243: R7 P24 CB Noah Daniels - TCU

Why, Jonny Mingo….you’re a daisy if you do….

Got him circled as the “Steelers did it again” WR selection in this draft.

    Re: 2023 Mock Drafts

Q: Can some please explain to me how WR and OLB have somehow been listed on the teams needs chart in the top few rounds of the draft?

We need a new OC not new WR's. We already have 1-George Pickens, 2-Diontae Johnson, 3-Calvin Austin III, 4-Stephen Sims, 5-Anthony Miller, 6-Miles Boykin, and 7-Cody White (While I admit most of those are not world beaters but they're better depth players than most we have at other positions.) and at OLB we have TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith as our starters, we need depth to fight for time with Jamir Jones, Malik Reed, and Quincey Roche behind them.

You don't draft depth in the top few rounds when you need CB1, CB2, NCB, NT, DE2, RILB, LILB, LT, LG, OC, & QB2 and all with a higher priority IMO.

I think we should try and bring back NCB Cam Sutton and ILB Myles Jack then draft something like this instead:

RD1.17 - OT Broderick Jones - Georgia or which ever of the top three OL men remains.

RD2.32 - CB Deonte Banks - Maryland or CB - Eli Ricks - LSU

    * We could possibly even spend the over night negotiating a trade back a few slots here (10 or less) and maybe gain an additional third here and still gain a quality CB player.

RD2.49 - ILB Jack Campbell - Iowa or ILB Noah Sewell - Oregon

RD3.80 - DT Keenan Benton - Wisconsin or DT Gervin Dexter - Florida

RD4.117 - OC Joe Tippmann - Wisconsin or OC Ricky Stromberg - Arkansas

RD7.212 - OLB Aubrey Miller - Jackson State or OLB Isaiah Land - Florida A&M

RD7.223 - WR Bryce Ford-Wheaton - West Virginia or WR Jacob Copeland - Maryland or WR Justin Shorter - Florida

Nice draft, and most of us do understand the ‘need’ part of the draft. Building around your rookie QB has moved the needle on WRs a bit.

I don’t know that any rookie OL will be starting in 2023. It is a need but also as depth immediately.

LBs and DBs are the prime positions this year, IMO.

So McShay just mocked Emmanuel Forbes, CB South Carolina to the Steelers at 17 yesterday. 6'1" 166lbs, 4.35 second 40, 14 INT in 3 seasons.

    16. Devon Witherspoon CB Illinois
    19. Joey Porter Jr.

6'1" 166? Would the Steelers take a CB that thin? They like their cb's to tackle. Maybe he lost weight for the combine?

    That is fast though.

Forbes is the MissState CB. I like him although he’s a bit light for the AFCNorth. I prefer JPjr, Cam Smith, or Deonte Banks at 17. I didn’t see Cam Smith in McShay’s 1st round mock. Maybe I would rather grab Darnell Wright at 17 and Smith at 32. Maybe.

Yeah, that is light but I have seen anything from 173 to 180 listed. I cant see why he would try and lose any weight for the combine. But he played 3 seasons in the SEC and didnt miss any time, so he can play, cover, run and pick off the football. Maybe he plays at 175-180lbs.

Yes, you are right. Miss State. I saw that burgandy jersey and my Darius Rush fascination took over. There is something about Darius Rush from South Carolina that just says "Steelers CB" to me.

6'2", 198lbs , 4.36. Maybe in the 3rd round if he is still there.

I love Schmitz but it would be a toss-up with OT Darnell Wright imo. They've addressed IOL pretty heavily this FA, I'd lean to an OT in Wright. But dang, Schmitz is a player.

32 is going to be a fun pick with all the over night discussion, etc. IF they trade back, they better get an absolute haul in return. GMs are going to be looking at the who's available list and some one will be too enticing. Picks 18-31 would have to be a lot of CBs, OTs and a couple of ILB/OLBs before I'd be looking for a trade back though.
I just have a feeling some team is going to want to take a WR that they covet with that 32 pick.

    Re: 2023 Mock Drafts

Just over 3 weeks until the 1st round Mock:

    17. Darnell Wright OT Tennessee - LT upgrade to protect KP's blindside.
    32. Nolan Smith LB Georgia - College edge defender that converts to pro ILB.
    49. DJ Turner CB Michigan - Slot CB with sub 4.30 straight line speed.
    80. Warren McClendon OT Georgia - Rookie swing OT that will upgrade RT after the 2023 season.
    120. Jonathan Mingo WR OleMiss - 6'2"-220lbs with elite ball skills and hard to tackle.
    234 PJ Mustipher DT PSU - 6'3"-320lbs 1gap NT.
    241. Deneric Prince RB Tulsa - Steelers size RB with 4.41 speed.

    Re: 2023 Mock Drafts

Less than 2 weeks away from draft day mock:

    17. Joey Porter Jr CB PSU - Looking through team needs, position values, dinners, meetings, etc....I still believe this is the name at the very top of Tomlin's draft wish-list. CB with size, speed, wingspan, experience, bloodlines, and ability.

    31. Dawand Jones OT OSU - 6'8"-360LBs with elite length and coachable athleticism. I believe he will immediately become the #1 backup OT for 2023, possibly '24. But a franchise RT once he takes over. This is the player the Steelers have spent the most time with.

    49. Keion White DE GaTech - With the return of Ogunjobi, and the FA signings of Watts and Fehoko, I think the Steelers DL selection will be a DE. Keion White already has the size, speed, and strength the Steelers want. All he lacks is experience behind a vet like Heyward.

    80. Bryce Ford-Wheaton WR W.Virginia - 6'4"-220LBs that runs 4.4/40. An elite athlete that is a deep threat and redzone nightmare.

    120. Chandler Zavala OG NC State - 6'5"-325LBs, Older prospect that was brought in for a predraft visit as well as had dinner with Pat Meyer at his proday.

    234. Robert Beal Jr OLB Georgia - 6'4"-245LBs OLB. Needs time in an NFL weight room in order to set an effective edge, but has the body type and football IQ to grow into another great Steelers LB. Great instincts in coverage.

    241. Jaren Hall QB BYU - The Steelers need a 3rd guy in the room and Hall was brought in for a predraft visit.

I think they go with Branch but I really hope they take Porter…if he lasts to 17.

It's coming down to the week of the draft now, and I think I'm finally locked in on what I'm looking for come Thursday night.

    Potential Immediate Starters
    RD1 - CB - Joey Porter Jr.
    RD2 - OC - John Micheal Schmitz
    RD2 - OT - D.Jones / D.Wright / A.Harrison etc.

Impact Depth positions with potential moving forward
    RD3 - DT - G.Dexter or K.Benton
    RD4 - ILB - D.Henley or N.Sewell or EDGE - W.McDonald or N.Herbig

Filling out the roster and taking shots for depth / ST
RD7 - EDGE - Isaiah Land or ILB Aubrey Miller Jr.
RD7 - RB Ibraham Mohammed or QB Tanner Morgan or WR Dontay Demas

For this draft in particular, I hope they stand pat at their current selections for the first 3 rounds. If they want to do some wheelin' and dealin' in rnds 4 and later so be it. But I like where those first 4 picks fall.
In that scenario the Steelers would have 2 picks in the 1st round at 16 and 17. But, would not pick again until pick 80 in the 3rd. So, it would cost both round 2 picks to add 1, but that would equal back to back 1st round picks. The steelers could possibly get their CB AND OT of choice day1.
