The steelers were very slow in their contract negotiation in the last few years like Watt last year and Heyward in 2020
I'm really very happy that they were very fast this year with Fitzpatrick, Boswell and now Johnson!
It's probably because the steelers agree to guarantee a good part of the players' contract now, so better late than never!
Perfectly suitable. DJ is a mixed bag receiver, so he gets a mixed bag contract.
pushin' P
Why is the PG reporting that it’s a 3 year $39M deal? Oh I guess they’re adding this year at $3M to the total.
Is it a 2 or 3 year deal? Confused.
Khan is looking good!
Very happy this got done. He's a pro bowl caliber receiver and his best days are ahead of him.
If DJ had played this year and been tagged the next two years, it would have cost the Steelers MORE than this deal. Really. Khan essentially tagged DJ (without the drama… and cheaper).
The tag for a WR for 2022 is already 18 million… and it goes up every year (2023, 2024)… something like $18.5 million, $19 million.
Right about what the “market” indicated he should get. A little lower than anticipated but that’s off-set by enter FA again a year before his peers.
Give a little get a little. Each side should be fairly pleased.
Looks like OK Is gonna be a bit more aggressive/creative with contracts than KC.
Sure, he got paid and they have cap room to spare it.
Pro Football Network.com ranks him #22 of receivers in 2022. PFF named their top 32 and Johnson wasnt in it, so to be paid the #17 REC in the league is a good deal for him, when there are likely 20-25 better receivers in the NFL than him at this point.
Pickens and Austin on rookie deals and Johnson for the next 3 years are decent targets in the passing game and when you add Friermuth and Claypool on a prove it year, things look ok for receiving options. Its a good deal I think.
i see part of the speed of this being done is because Pickens is looking really good. and i'm sure DJ and his agent noticed. i also consider DJ to be a better receiver than his numbers. i do think had he had a better QB throwing him the ball the past couple years his numbers might be a bit better and the conversation about him would be much different.
