Great first half for Kenny....It was even better that last week!
What seperates the great from the mediocre. The sign of a special quarterback is one who makes things happen even when things around him aren't perfect or up to par. Pickett is dealing with an O-Line lacking confidence and still got the job done. That's special.
Kenny Pickett got a touchdown taken away from him, then came back and answered anyway.

On the deep throw to Friermuth, I love the way Pickett bought just a little time in the pocket and then took a little bit off the throw to get it over the defense and threw a beautiful ball. It's one of those plays you see veteran quarterbacks make to give a receiver a hair more time to complete the route or find an opening.
Very impressive.

From the highlights Im over the moon to see that the Steelers are attempting and making pass plays between the hashes downfield. Wonder of wonders.
Pickett had 151.5 passer rating tonight.
None of the QBs looked bad. Mitch had absolutely NO time to do anything behind this O line. And Rudolph had to deal with a million penalties and very little time to do much as well. Mostly short passes.
This offense would be very interesting if we had even a middle of the road O line.

Pickett might be in actual contention for QB1 after tonight's performance. I expected him to play a little in the 2nd half since he basically only had 2 short drives, but they yanked him.

It's definitely encouraging stuff.
The old grump in me cautions that it still needs to be seen what KP has when defense game plans specifically for him.
We've seen his opening gambit against vanilla. What happens when they get fancy and all that? Does he have more to bring out?
No way to know until it happens. But I'm legit excited to see.

Here's the real interesting thing. Both Mitch and Kenny played against the other team's number one defense. Pickett made things happen and Mitch didn't. I really would like to see Kenny get the start next week and if he does well, it might be worthwhile to name him as the starter.
Also, anyone notice how little time Pickett got compared to Rudolph? I'm wondering if they're hoping he puts something on tape so they can use it to trade him. "See, he is a great back up. We just have two starters on the roster now."

That's very fair. And, to be honest, I agree. it's easy to confuse younger QBs. But at this point, I'm not sure we gain much more with Mitch.

Pickett didn't play against *all* the starters. Mitchell was running for his life but still made a few getaways. Notice the O-line was suddenly better when Pickett came into the game.
Our O-line is terrible and I'm not ready to throw Pickett to the wolves and turn him into Andrew Luck, even if he's looking promising. Let Trubisky take the abuse this year while we get our O-line right. The Jags' DL might wind up being special this year but that was still an awful performance.
The team is paying less for the combination of Trubisky, Rudolph, and Pickett than a lot of teams pay for just one guy. I don't think they're desperate to trade Mason unless they can get an asset that improves the O-line NOW.

Picket got better each week of training camp… and looked POISED in the pocket during the games. I’d hand him the reins without a moment’s hesitation.

Pickett already looks like the best QB, but I’m a bit hesitant to already start him, this OL is gonna get him killed. First OL that gave me flashbacks of Sean Mahan and Rollerskates Scott

The choice so far looks to be between 2 'vets' and the rookie that honestly looks better than both of them. You guys ready for some growing pains?

Honestly, Burrow and the Bengals OL made it work. Although Burrow has finished his first 2 seasons injured.

Think about this.....an aged, beat down, systemically losing Matthew Stafford moves to a competent team with competent coaches and GM. Superbowl 1st year.

When you look at our line and how it plays, then look at some of the offensive calls (Canada still loves calling plays designed to throw short of of the sticks), Roethlisberger's play last year makes a lot of sense. Rudolph thru most of the 2nd half did his Ben impression of last year. His average pass was like 7 yards, only had 2 throws over 10 yards in the air. (17 completions and only 130 yards?). It makes the mobility of either Mitch or Kenny that much more important. I'm really worried about how Canada is gonna adjust (or not) to the reality of this O-line. He did nothing last year and the only time we had any offense was when Ben would take over late in games.

We all know this. Only reason why Trubisky is over Pickett is due to experience. And if KP doesn't start the season, when does he? after week 4 or 5? is that really going to make a difference? after week 10 or 13? that would be likely be dumb as the season is half way over, and no one makes a QB change during that point of the season because of overall chemistry, the starter is the starter unless it's due to injuries.
Kenny is ready. His poise, anticipation on throws and command of the offense is quite apparent. He'll have ups and downs but so will Trubisky...

I don't like the term low-ceiling, that's pretty much used for any QB these days that doesn't run a 4.5 or better 40 and can sling the ball 100 yards. The most important part of being a QB is accuracy and being able to perform under pressure, and he seems to have both. Sure, his max range is probably 55 air yards, but IMO that's an NFL-level arm. And QB's usually improve their arm strength after a first couple years after their rookie season. Not saying he'll be an elite QB, but honestly I think he has what it takes if his trajectory stays this way.

True.
Of course he still has a lot to learn, and he hasn't seen anything close to what he is going to see going forward. He has done phenomenally well in the situations he has been in to this point.
Pickett has shined in a couple 2-minute drills. He has taken the team down the field each time, but that is when the defense is generally softer and the windows are larger. What is more impressive in those situations is that he has held up to the mental demands of calling plays and protections, and also executing everything while also making great decisions involving play and time on the field. That's something that is very difficult to do with little experience and in a new offense. It's not just that he's throwing the ball accurately, but knowing where to go with the ball based on the defense.
He is definitely the most accurate of the 3 QBs. He has made all the layups, and has also shown some savy in the pocket as he buys time, moves around in the pocket, and will sometimes take something off the throw to drop it into a window he helped create by buying that time. That shows an understanding of coverage and how to manipulate it.
His big tests are ahead of him, but so far you really can't play any better than he has to this point. It's going to be very exciting to see where this goes.
In the comments I've seen, the thing he has to be much better at is not always keeping his eyes on his receivers that he's going to throw.

That pass by Pickett down the middle to Muth was beautiful to watch

I still would rather have Trubisky start the season, and if it doesn't go well, then it's Pickett time. I think that is a much better scenario for Pickett's long term success than Having Pickett start the season and then get benched.

Next year's draft should all be OL.
