Report: Steelers Would Jump at Chance to Sign Baker Mayfield As Free Agent

During an appearance on the Orange and Brown Talk podcast, Cabot reports the Browns weren’t getting too many calls from teams interested in trading for Mayfield as of Tuesday. If Cleveland was forced to cut Mayfield, the Steelers would jump at the chance of signing him as a free agent. …

Yeah a Cleveland writer is promoting that idea. I've been a disser of Mayfield, but some of that is my Browns bias. I'd be 5% open to exploring the idea. As a GM you have to turn over every rock in order to find the solution to the one piece of the puzzle that matters most.

honestly not sure Mayfield could beat out Mitch , in fact I kind of doubt he would if you account for all of what Mitch brings to the table in terms of running ...

Mayfield is better than Mitch, I'd go for it if we don't have to break the bank

My problem with Mayfield is he tries to do too much and a lot of times it screws him. I’d be willing to give him a shot but not sure I would do it now that Trubisky is here. Had they not signed Mitch, I’d definitely explore Baker but signing Baker now is just wasting money at the QB position either in Baker or in Trubisky...

I don't know why they'd even entertain the idea if they're drafting his clone in Sam Howell.

So much this. Baker's brain writes multiple checks a game his body can't cash.

If he would just play"within himself" he would be alright. I mean, he still would be the starter that your team is constantly looking to upgrade from...but he'd be okay.

I know. I should just take your word for it instead, but don't pretend you haven't mentioned Howell just as much, if not more than what I've talked about Willis. You can drown with me pal.

This. It's not like there is a huge difference between the two. If we hadn't signed Trubisky yet then I would definitely go for it, but it is pointless now and a waste of CAP space.

    Re: Baker Mayfield

If we could get him on a backup' s salary ... Mayfield and Trubisky would be a better QB pairing than Rudolph and Haskins any day.

If we are going to take a QB in the draft, this is a waste of time; the third QB doesn't even play.

    Re: Baker Mayfield

I think a lot of Baker's problem with this is the fact that they've changed coaches so many times on him. I don't think he's been used properly and he has felt the pressure to perform for Cleveland. I give him props, he's got heart and plays hard. I went back and watched his highlights from the combine. I think Baker would be best in a west coast offense. If you look at how he moves and releases in those highlights you can see him excelling in that style offense. I don't expect that we are going to look like that. I don't see us going after him. For what purpose? I think Mitch gives us what we're looking for. He can make the throws. He's at 64% completions for his career, he can move. Put a team around him and I think he'll do well for us.

I want him in Pittsburgh so we can see commercials of him acting as if he’s living at Heinz Field.

(I gotta admit I chuckled at the part where he’s showing the “assistant” to throw out the trash on garbage day)

    Re: Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield is a bit Jekyll and Hyde. He has a very good season, the a not-so-good season, another very good season, back to not-so-good season. This would be his 5th season and I think if you take an honest look at his career, as the Browns' QB, he hasn't been stellar but he hasn't been terrible either. Did the Browns win a division title? No. Did the Browns make the playoffs? Yes. Did the Browns win a playoff game? Yes. And they came damn close to knocking off the Chiefs and advancing to the AFCC game. But they didn't. I think looking at the Browns and their football history you would have to say Baker Mayfield has been a successful QB for them. They have been successful with Baker Mayfield as their QB.

Would/could Baker Mayfield be a success with the Steelers is probably the better question. I don't know the answer to that and I don't think we will ever find out. I would say let's give him a shot and make the trade if we didn't already have Trubisky. With the money Watson is being paid, Baker probably just gets released and the Browns eat his contract. I think you at least make him an offer if that happens. Trubisky with Mayfield as backup with a rookie waiting in the wings or Mayfield with Trubisky as backup and a rookie waiting in the wings. I don't dislike that idea.

I wonder if he's held back by the pressure of being a #1 overall pick. He plays like he needs to do it all himself, he could probably tone that back and end up being a better player

    Re: Baker Mayfield

i would sign baker for maybe a one year 6 million deal if the browns cut him. noway i would give up a pick for him and no way in hell would i pay him that 5th year option money. ( 18 million ?)he is better than rudolf or haskins. cut rudolf and save 3 or 4 million. let him compete with trubisky for the job.

Agreed. On a scale of 1-10, Baker believes he is a 14 and acts like he is a 19, when he really is a 6.

His attitude isnt quite as bad as his performance as a QB in the 4th quarter of games. He might get flat out released and end up backing up in Seattle and getting drunk, then trashing a Starbucks bathroom. Hard pass.

They aren’t drafting a QB if they were to sign Baker…

^^^^THIS^^^^. Made worse by having new coaches every year. He'll end up playing somewhere. If he gets a chance to start I think he'll do reasonably well. If I were Seattle I would pick him up.
