    Maulet Coming Back

    https://steelersdepot.com/2022/03/ra...two-year-deal/

my favorite line from the write up "...a small but physically slow CB..."

I get it. Maulet is "capable" and "cheap" but just why?

There's gotta be someone somewhere with an ounce of upside that can be had....hopefully that is forthcoming.

It must be law that every Steelers Defense has to have at least one terrible player in the backend to get burnt and picked on every game.

Makes sense. He played well in the slot and is a guy that will contend for that spot in nickel or dime situations. If he was as bad as so many here think, Teryl Austin would be telling the front office to let him walk, which obviously isnt the case.

Maulet being replaced by Norwood later in the season during the “playoff push” tells me all I need to know.

He’s maxed out at his current level and if he’s a backup, then great! But starting? That’s not the starting nickel on a good team. It just isn’t.

    Re: Maulet Coming Back

Maulet was off the field on almost every third down situation. 85% of his snaps were on 1st and 2nd down.

Maulet only plays because the ILB are awful.

I’m sure it’s for not a lot of money. But let’s not pretend Maulet is anything but a willing tackler that is on the field primarily because they don’t trust Bush, Spillane, or Schoebert to be on the field.

As soon as they can, they yank Maulet off the field for an actual coverage player.

Just count your blessings it isnt Artie Burns
Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles didn't value him either , now he is a Stain at the Mistake by the Lake 3 teams in 4 years more of a shooting star than a superstar

    How much is guaranteed?

This is a typical Colbert “cover your bases” move. Sign Maulet… in case they can’t re-sign Edmunds. Even if they sign both, they can cut Maulet after camp.

That would be the best outcome. It means they have either upgraded their 3rd safety spot, the ILB position, or both. Allows them to do away with the "run defense (kinda) but also (sorta) pass defense" alignment that Maulet is best at.

Of course, in my fantasy world, Marcus Allen shares an Uber out of town with Maulet...

Just because players aren't superstars doesn't mean they suck at their job. Every team has role players that do something specific well and not so well at other specific things.

Seems every thread anymore is a this guy sucks or that guy sucks thread. Even just discussing draft prospects has become this. And apparently every FA available in 2022 sucks or else they wouldn't be a FA.

    Well said!!

Maulet is a slot CB and not a guy that will play Boundary of Field side, as he doesnt have long speed. He has short area quickness, change of direction and explosiveness demonstrated by his 36.5" vertical leap. Maulet is not a guy with size or range suited to play Safety, but rather the quicker slot receivers and he can blitz effectively from there with his quickness.

A guy like Tre Norwood is bigger, has experience playing CB and Safety and is more of a smoother athlete, but not as sudden in his change of direction as Maulet. Norwood also I think has 4.55 speed so isnt a great candidate to play outside as a CB. Norwood has a history in college of doing a good job covering TE's and I seem to recall vs the Ravens last year he was pretty much in Mark Andrews pocket a lot of times in coverage.

As you point out, both do some specific things well and better than the other. In a game where lots of fans like to throw around the word "sub packages", I dont think a lot of them understand the flexibility that different athletes give you in different sub packages. They just think nickel is nickel and dime is dime, but sometimes you may want a different nickel package in vs different teams in 11 personnel. Maulet is a good guy to re up to the team.

This here. Good for depth. Colbert does this alot and that means he can focus on other positions in the draft or free agency.
