Speculation: Chase Claypool “might” be on trading block

Jeremy Fowler has “speculated” that the Steelers would accept offers for Chase Claypool. Fowler admits it’s more of an educated guess from information he’s gathered from various agents… and there is ZERO connection/information coming out of the Steelers front office about this.

That said… since the topic has been broached…

What would you take for Claypool?

He has developed some bad habits (falling down an catches), but his upside is still crazy high. If we can get some decent route trees and a QB who can deliver the ball to him on the run he will be very good again. That being said, I would take a 2nd rounder.

If you trade Claypool, you’ll be looking to draft a WR to replace him. So can you get a guy to equal his potential and whatever you feel a realistic expectation of Claypool production would be.

Because that’s the trade. Claypool for a pick that turns into the new Claypool.

I would trade Claypool if JuJu were re-signed and for a 2nd round pick.

Depends on who we would trade with. A back of the second round pick? No. Early? Let's talk. And I don't think I would have the final discussion about this until after day one of the draft.

That said, didn't we just bring in a new WR coach? There's a reason someone thought that would be a good idea. Coaching up the likes of Claypool, or an early round rookie...or both?

the thing is , every player on the roster is open to "conversations" (except for TJ , Cam, Minkah and likely last years draft class ) just because they will listen to offers doesn't mean they are on the " TRADE BLOCK"
Kenny Pickett is who I though he was .. Eagles didn't value him either , now he is a Stain at the Mistake by the Lake 3 teams in 4 years more of a shooting star than a superstar

If the nee WR coach can cosch him up thsn he worth a first. The guy has all the physical skills. He needs to improve his route tree and his approach to the catch.

Package him and swap first round picks with a team with a top 10 pick in the draft and take one of the top quarterbacks.

If they're not going to go all in on getting a QB they might as well trade him.

I definitely would NOT do that…

Maybe the new wr coach saw his tape and said ‘pass’

Steelers need a big fast receiver to stretch the field - unfortunately claypool has been more like a combat catching possession receiver (and loses most of his combats)

Because the toughness isn't there, just like the mental toughness is lacking between DJ ears.

Everybody loved Claypool's rookie season. His sophomore season was not that different statistically. Today, as things stand, he's not a tradeable option. (anything for the right price and all)

Pick a Steelers WR and place them on a team with a better starting QB and they look 50-100% better. As a previous poster said...for the right offer, anyone is available. But, if I was in charge, I wouldn't be in a great hurry to move Claypool.

For the above, that does not apply to James Washington. That dude just sucks.

Claypool apparently had surgery on his right arm right after the season. There was never any mention of an injury that I remember. Could be part of his sophomore slump and why he looked and played differently. ???

Was Ben really the problem? were there times were claypool got separation and had to come back or slow down for a pass? Im just guessing he was a uninspired route runner..

for the record I wouldn’t trade him unless we got a really good offer, …we’ve got no one else until or if juju is signed

That only works if a receiver is getting open. More times than not, Claypool is blanketed in coverage and has to jump, dive, tumble, whatever to make a contested catch. Wasn’t often that he caught a ball clean and got some YAC.

There were several times that he had to slow down. At the same time, he wasn’t wide open either.

funny, he’s got the same 40 time as Martavis Bryant (4.42) yet Bryant got separation a heck of a lot more than claypool

    - that’s lazy route running

Re: Speculation: Chase Claypool “might” be on trading block

Give these WRs a non-washed QB with a legitimate NFL arm and I am willing to bet that separation will not be an issue.

I can picture in my mind at least a half dozen times that Claypool alone had multiple steps on his man and Ben failed to put an accurate pass out to him. I can also picture several others that since Ben was launching mortar shells for anything over 12 yards, Claypool had to throttle way down during his route and DBs had time to work back into phase enough to make the catch contested. Flatten out the trajectory of the pass and Claypool may be able to outrun the DB to the ball - making that visible separation.

This isn't to say that Claypool is not without faults or flaws, he has plenty. But when every WR on the roster can out-run their QB's arm by a country mile...this is what it looks like.

Honestly though, how many WRs did Ben make look like HoFers, get a payday elsewhere, and completely drop off the planet?

An extensive list. But Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson, sadly, never got to play with that Ben Roethlisberger.

Claypool with "prime cut" Big Ben? That would've set the league on fire. The Ben R that could drop it in the bucket from anywhere and had no fear of tight windows? Oh my goodness...it would've been the second half of the Minnesota game, but just like all the time.

Good thing is we're about to find out if you are correct.

But name one WR had it better after they left.

Sure. And those WRs left playing with one of the best QBs in football for lesser QB situations it more money.

Leaving 2019-2021 Ben for another situation is entirely different.

The pattern won’t hold in my opinion. Juju, Claypool, and DJ would look better outside of Pittsburgh.
