I counted a half dozen DC's across the league that were recently head coaches and may be again soon...

And Carroll and Tomlin appear to occupy a bit of an in between space where they call "some" amount of plays.

Point is that it is entirely common and has historically been a thing some guys have had a ton of success with on both offense and defense.
i think calling it success is questionable, not talking about the injuries on the d line, but the issues at ILB haven’t been successful. Our run defense has been pretty bad since VW retired so I would say our defensive success is still TBD. Also Backfield got shredded by any above average QB and the pass rush disappeared anytime TJ’s groin pull flared up - we couldn’t make any adjustments to counter these issues - they just got exploited.

I’d like to see Tomlin let the new DC call his plays for the most part at least. What Butler recently said was not comforting at all and the timing of it shows a bit of resentment

How much playcalling did Tomlin handle with LeBeau? Do we know?

How much playcalling did Tomlin handle once Butler took over through last weekend? Do we know?

I would expect he always had a voice in the defense. I also expect it fluctuated year to year and even game to game. Tomlin may not have had much say in coordinator hires during his tenure but this is his team. I bet he has been in Ben's headset from time to time as well. I don't find it surprising at all.

I thought at some point we had some agreement that Tomlin was calling game day because Keith was a slow talker. I would expect Tomlin to allow Austin to run the defense and make the calls

I am too. We will need to make a good LB coach hire though. I'm fine with promoting Martin to OLBs coach, but maybe there should be some discussion about Olsavsky.

Basically hired him 2 years ago for this eventuality.

Interesting to see what they do with OLB coaching slot.

And Butler was a great LBs coach.

I’m not saying I don’t want Austin. I just don’t know that a good position coach is necessarily a good coordinator.

John Harbaugh was a special team coach.

(plus one year as a secondary coach)

Hey! This is a valid point I never thought of... Sure, Harrison gives full complaint/credit to LeBeau for dropping him into coverage (less to his liking) in the presser right before SBXLIII, but it kinda worked out, right!?! So then after that, our defense loses a step or 2 (age is a thing) and the front orifice fails to fill key def positions, all while hurrying LeBeau out the door so they can replace him with some guy (Butler) who is supposedly in such high demand from other teams that we need to promote him quickly or risk losing him?!?!?!? And, now this supposed defensive expert asshole is retiring after leading the least successful defensive campaigns this team has ever seen? It all sounded like a steaming pile of bullshit at the time, but I'm getting a distinctly more sinister picture in my head now that the smoke has cleared. There's a cult at work here, and they're good at making a media spectacle out of this team, however not very good at football. There's the door Keith, your crony replacement is ready.

Nice cherry picking to take a part of a post out of context. But I guess you don’t have much else to do.

Didn’t you hear? Steelers are a disintegrating organization with no real path forward.

Tomlin calling the plays is not news. This has been suspect for years and Butler's mind has been on the golf course for years. I hope Austin succeeds but I would never promise a job to anyone without looking for the best available and that means outside talent.

Nobody worth a crap will want to come to Pittsburgh just to let Tomlin make all the calls. That's why they promote from within.

I think Witherspoon had problems getting healthy the past couple years when he was in SF. Not minimizing Austin's coaching ability, but I think there was the potential for Spoon to just get healthy and understand the scheme, then performing.

Still, I think they brought Austin a couple years ago as a planned eventual successor at DC. If it happens, then I am good with it.

I think Witherspoon gave an interview last week or so that lauded Austin’s role in his late season performance. But I don’t remember the details.
