I think the question is really, why are we all still surprised by this bullshit?
Maybe Tomlin isn't stupid, but his irrationally stubborn nature makes him appear to be so.
I think Tomlin let's his coaches run too much. He makes some bad hires and then to his benefit he doesn't micromanage. JC didn't start until Klemm was gone. But the damn head coach gotta get there way before that point. He should have told Klemm it over shuffle the damn line and let's go

JC Is at about his ceiling for a player. And, honestly, it isn’t very good. Like not at all.
Green has the chance to be so much more.
He and Moore were force fed snaps in 21 with an eye towards the benefit of future seasons.
Green was bad this year but not sure why he should be given up on. Should he be penciled in as a starter? NO, but who is to say he can't improve?
He got worse the longer he played , I personally saw no improvement, based on what I see on the TV

I think the issue this year was that we needed so many of our rookies to actually make a major contribution. You all know how the Steelers operate. When we have a major need we sign a mid - range free agent prior to the draft so we don't have to reach for a player and that drafted player doesn't have to carry full load his first year. So many things went wrong this year that the system broke down. First, we lost players who we didn't expect to, and couldn't, replace in Tuitt and Decastro. Second, our mid- range FA signings turned pretty bottom feeder. I thought Finney would beat out Green in preseason, but he could hardly hold a roster spot. Similarly, I thought we got a steel Joe Shobert and we got stolen.
So, I think it's fair to criticize Tomlin for a lot of things this year, but I have to temper some of that criticism with just having very few options.
Because Klemm was incompetent
he bolted during the regular season and Green was immediately replaced by JC, that’s no coincidence
Of course they drafted Green to play center. Tomlin saying Green has flexibility is just a way of softening the blow when they move him to RG.
I don't think anyone is saying that we should give up on green, but I would try him at G. The issue is Tomlin said he was NFL starter ready at the start of the season and tried to make it happen through the entire season when it was clear for everyone to see that green wasn't ready. Why didn't Tomlin have a fair, open competition between Finney, Green & JC? They need to draft a real C.
I think we should all temper our expectations about rookie OL. We have just completed a season watching multiple rookies and first time starters struggle to adjust and deal with OL play at the NFL level.
Looking across the league...only one of the ballyhooed center prospects from this past draft actually had success playing center - Humphrey. Dickerson and Meinerz played guard for a variety of reasons.
The 2022 Steelers best bet for improved play at Center is a quantum leap in Kendrick Green's performance. If they draft a center they either need to get the ONE prospect in each draft class that can play the position in the NFL in their rookie year or they need to be "okay" with it being 2023 before Center is a position of strength.
Tying this into the OP, was switching to Hassenauer at Center an upgrade over Green? If the answer is yes then that is the proof in what you just said. The dropoff from Pouncey to Hassenauer was so great we just assumed a loss when that happened. Now the 'vet' is the upgrade. Logical.
It doesn't matter who plays now. We finally tapped I to the Mike Shanahan coaching tree.
That's right Chris Morgan was an assistant line coach for the 2013 redskins
Along with Kyle Shanahan, Matt Lafluer and Sean Mcvay
I expect great things .

This article is from December but it was an interesting read on a college OL coach.
https://www.behindthesteelcurtain.co...mm-oregon-news
The scouting reports seem to be slower coming in than in recent years. There is a lot of information on players on 2021 expectations. The 2021 college season is over and players are making their declarations. But there is very little movement on the scouting sites. Strange and frustrating.
Green gut a long leash because Hassensaussen’s ceiling is: backup. The hope was that Green would improve beyond that level, but he simply didn’t.
Coaches say things to pump players up all of the time.
Was there much if a competition? I don’t know, and I don’t think it mattered. The ceiling of JC was a backup; the ceiling for Kendrick was possibly higher. All things being even, I too would have given the rookie the start over a guy who barely makes the 53 roster.
Yup. The best version of JC is a guy you are looking to replace ASAP. The best version of Green is a guy that locks up a starting interior OL position for several years.
I couldn't get the video to play the other day...so not entirely certain what Moats had to say...but based on the context in this thread -- people are making far too big a deal out of it.
my beef with the center fiasco is that they went in to the season so complacent at center. it is like they drafted Green and said ok we good. they didnt even bring in any vets to my knowledge other than finney.
New england picked up ted karass for 3 million. Karass isnt that good but he would have looked like an all pro compared to what we had. the niners picked up alex mack for a 3 million cap hit this year. again he is on the downside but still would have been a huge upgrade. they had 8 million of cap space left over. hell they could have even signed corey lindsley and back loaded his deal like the chargers did.
the options were there, for some explicable reason they were way too over confident in a 3rd round rookie with very very little experience at the position. did they get some bad advice from a psychic or something ?
same goes for tackle. there were cheap tackles available.
You can talk about potential all you want. JC performed better as the running game improved when he was given the start. It shouldn’t have taken most of the season to figure out that Green couldn’t handle the center position. But coaches (Klemm, Tomlin, whoever) are sometimes motivated by politics and their own self interests instead of what’s best for the team. Happens at work with management all the time. Professional Football is probably no different
