That leaves Arthur Maulet as the frontrunner for slot CB.
Unless Pierre can handle some outside CB and they move Sutton to Slot CB in certain packages which there was some discussion.
I don't think they are done yet. Need some more depth in the secondary.
Brooks could be signed back later no?

According to the article, if he clears waivers he’ll probably go to our IR.
I’m not sure why we don’t send him to IR now. There might be a money difference if we waive him first. Either that or there might be some preseason rules about IR, like maybe he would have to be on the active 53 first, which would force us to cut someone else in the final cut down.
But if I’m wrong, maybe someone else has a better explanation.
I think Pierre on the outside and Sutton at slot is very likely. Maulet looked OK there and if he makes the 53, then its another option. I also think Tre Norwood can get some coverage opportunities vs TE's in sub packages.
IMO, Brooks was just there for run support in the slot, he wasnt going to cover too many receivers effectively.
Until he got injured, Brooks was looking like he was going to be a part of some of the specialty packages. Simply, he outplayed Maulet.
I’m assuming that there is some sort of “cap reasoning” (or something to do with the 53 msn roster) as to why he has to be released before they simply put him on IR.

I bet the way things played out with Golson with all of his injuries and the investment the team made was a factor in their decision.
I know Golson was a .much bigger investment because of where he was taken in the draft, but they probably want to see him come back from the injury and show can play.

Putting him on IR in the preseason means he is not eligible to return this season.

Per the article, “ Only players on the 53-man roster after Sept. 1 are eligible to be designated for return from IR or the non-football injury list, Pelissero added.”
If they wanted to make him eligible for return they would have had to put him on the 53th man roster rather than waive him before putting him on IR.
"Defensive back Antoine Brooks Jr. cleared waivers and will remain with the Steelers, according to the NFL transactions listing from Wednesday.
Brooks, who the team waived with an injury designation on Tuesday, will revert to the Steelers’ injured reserve list.

Maybe they corrected an earlier error in the article. But it still seems like there’s a typo in there somewhere.
I think the gist of it is, if they want him to be able to return this year they’d have to release him again before putting him on the roster. They could have just waited to put him on IR after Sept 1st, but that would have necessitated cutting someone else and risking losing that player. Seems like a risk they weren’t willing to take. Or maybe his injury is so bad that they don’t anticipate the possibility of him coming back this season.
