Steelers Meet With a Five-Time Pro Bowl Guard

The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking at free agent options to add depth to their offensive line.

Turner, 28, played the 2020 season with the Los Angeles Chargers after spending his first six years with the Carolina Panthers. He was the Panthers' third-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Turner was traded to the Chargers last season but missed seven games with a string of injuries in 2020. He was cut by Los Angeles in March.

The Steelers don't have much depth on their offensive line. Veteran guard David DeCastro did not practice during the team's minicamp, leaving Rashaad Coward as the team's primary guard opposite of Kevin Dotson.

B.J. Finney and J.C. Hassenauer are considered reliable swing guards, but both are competing for the starting center position. Rookie Kendrick Green is preparing to transition to a full-time center in the NFL.

That would be great and give them very good depth at guard.

I was thinking maybe they would bring in an experienced tackle, but it’s hard to argue with a player of that caliber when healthy if you can sign him at an affordable rate.

I wonder if DeCastro got some procedure done which is causing him to miss OTA/camp?

He was banged up all year last season going back to training camp.

This can’t be simply dismissed. He looked off and like he was just going through the motions at various points last season.

He’s a smart guy and likely has been good with his $$$. Maybe starting to question if the destruction of his body is worth it?

Or he could just have something going on and Tomlin gave him a veteran pass.

We'll see (and or hear) what happens now. DeCastro rarely made much in the way of statements to the press. Will we hear anything at all?

He was a hell of a guard for us for a long time. It's a sad day.

If you gotta pull a RG out of your ass totally unexpectedly, you could do worse than hoping Turner is healthy.
