If you can sign a guy from a southern school with a name that sounds like he should be driving for a Nascar you do it.

Wow. Really? Spillane is a bonafide starter. Are you serious? His metrics and numbers and grading put him and Bush in the same spot. Just saying. And he will only get better in the system and improve through targeted training this off season. Spillane is bonafide and ain't going anywhere. One of the best luck finds in the league.
There's zero doubt Spillane lines up Beside Bush for the season. Deservedly so.
The first 3 plays on that video show:
-he comes downhill vs the run and doesn't wait for the blocker to come to him.
-he engages the blocker quickly with leverage to "strike and shed" the blocker.
-he gets off the block quickly and gets to the ballcarrier.
The 4th play on that video shows:
-he is able to track the RB with his eyes, while finding a path upfield, across the LOS to be able to meet the RB and make the tackle.
All good traits in the run game. He seems to tackle high, but that is easily correctable with practice. He is basically the replacement for Williams in 2022 and would give the Steelers speed at both ILB spots when he plays next to Bush.
Spillane in pass coverage is a perfect example of what Johnson is not currently. If you watch some of Spillane highlights at W Michigan, you see that he understands pass concepts, route combinations, situations of down and distance and what the offense might be looking for in a pass completion. But athletically, you can see that Spillane isnt in the same league as Bush, Johnson, Gilbert III.
Buddy Johnson will run from sideline to sideline and make tackles on RB's, where Spillane doesnt have the same speed to get there. Spillane uses his knowledge and likely film study to get him in positions to minimize that athletic disadvantage.
