The Steelers signed outside linebacker Jamir Jones to a contract Wednesday afternoon.
Jones, the brother of Steelers practice squad offensive lineman Jarron Jones, was signed by the Texans last offseason after being undrafted out of Notre Dame. He was released in July.
Jones earned a starting job in his final season at Notre Dame and recorded 4 ½ sacks after playing mostly in a reserve role in his first few seasons with the Fighting Irish.
Jones worked out at Notre Dame’s pro day last month, when Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was on campus to watch this year’s draft prospects. The Steelers have signed four players from the 2020 draft class this offseason that went through pro day workouts this year after they failed to latch onto teams last year during the pandemic.
The Steelers are searching for depth at outside linebacker behind starters T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. Last month, they signed Cassius Marsh, who was signed off the Colts practice squad in the middle of last season. They’re also expected to draft an outside linebacker later this month.
